What a screenshot API does—and what it does not
A screenshot API opens a webpage in a browser-like renderer and returns a file. For this workflow, the key requirement is a provider and endpoint that return PDF, rather than only an image. The rendered PDF can preserve visible invoice particulars, but it cannot prove that the source data is complete or correct.

India’s Central Goods and Services Tax Rules, 2017, Rule 46 specifies particulars for a tax invoice. These include supplier name, address and GSTIN; a financial-year-unique serial number and issue date; recipient details as applicable; descriptions and values; and tax particulars. Use these as checks when reviewing the captured document, not as fields the API verifies.
For notified classes of registered persons, Rule 48(4) sets out an e-invoice process using particulars in FORM GST INV-01 and obtaining an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) through the common portal. Rule 48(5) states that an invoice issued by a person subject to sub-rule (4) outside the specified manner is not treated as an invoice. A screenshot API does not register an invoice or issue an IRN.

The IRIS IRP printing guidance describes reporting invoice details, receiving an IRN, then generating a PDF, printing or forwarding the invoice. Its API integration guidance describes direct integration as suited to taxpayers with internal IT teams, large transaction volumes and real-time e-invoice needs. That is a separate process from rendering an already available invoice webpage.
Capture an invoice webpage as a PDF
1. Confirm access to the page
Open the invoice URL in the same authorized account or access context needed to view it. Do not submit a URL or credentials for a page you are not authorized to access. URL-based capture is documented by the providers discussed below, but that does not establish support for every login flow. Confirm that your chosen API can handle the access method your page requires before relying on it.

2. Request PDF output and choose rendering settings
Set the API’s output format to PDF. Decide whether you want the page’s screen styling or print styling, whether background graphics should be included, and whether the page should be fitted onto a single sheet. These options can change pagination and appearance. A one-page fit may make a dense invoice too small to read, so do not select it just to reduce the page count.

3. Decide whether to capture the full page
For invoices that extend below the initial viewport, enable full-page capture if the API supports it. ScreenshotOne documents full_page=true and describes scrolling intended to trigger lazy-loaded content. Dynamic page content can still fail to render as expected; verify every page in the output.
4. Wait for the invoice to finish rendering
Invoice data, fonts, images and QR codes may load after the initial navigation. Configure a suitable wait condition or delay and a timeout using the provider’s documented options. There is no single wait setting that guarantees every page is ready, and no live invoice render or reliability measurement is established here. Check the actual PDF rather than assuming that a successful API response means every element appeared.

5. Review the PDF before storing or using it
Compare the displayed document with the source page. In particular, check the invoice number and date, supplier and recipient details, line items, tax amounts and totals, all pages, and any QR code or IRN shown on the page. These checks are a review of the rendered copy, not API validation of the invoice’s legal status.
6. Store it under your organization’s policies
Apply your business’s access controls, retention rules and privacy practices to the resulting file. Applicable retention periods and a universally safe storage method are not established here; follow the requirements that apply to your organization and records.

API options for URL-to-PDF capture

These are different endpoint arrangements, not evidence that Browserless’s screenshot endpoint itself returns PDFs.

Before choosing an API for a production workflow, check whether it supports your input and authentication method, page sizing and breaks, full-page or lazy-loaded content, suitable wait and timeout controls, and the request-security, privacy and storage practices your organization needs. Troubleshooting a bad or incomplete PDF
- The PDF shows a login page or access error: the capture did not have the required page access. Confirm the URL and authorized access flow; do not assume that any URL-based API supports your particular login method.
- Invoice fields or images are missing: the page may not have finished loading, or content may load only after scrolling. Adjust the documented wait behavior or full-page setting and inspect the new output.
- Text or totals are cut off: check page size, margins, orientation and page-fit settings. Avoid forcing a dense invoice onto one page if it makes text illegible.
- Background colors or graphics are absent: determine whether the PDF is using print styling, then enable the provider’s documented print-background option if appropriate.
- The PDF has unexpected page breaks: compare screen and print rendering and adjust page settings. Review every page because a visually plausible first page may not contain the full invoice.
- A QR code or IRN is too small to inspect: use a readable page size and scale rather than compressing everything into one page; compare the result with the source page.
