Automatically generate social sharing images by creating a page-specific image at a public URL, then placing that URL in the page’s Open Graph metadata. You can render each card from page data with a code-based route such as Vercel’s @vercel/og, or transform an existing image with a service such as Cloudinary. Whichever route you choose, social crawlers must be able to fetch the finished image.
Choose how to generate each image
The right approach depends mainly on what you already have: page data and a web application, or image assets you want to adapt.

These are different implementation workflows, not a measured performance or cost comparison. Vercel’s documentation describes its own renderer, while Cloudinary’s articles describe its own transformation workflow; neither establishes a neutral head-to-head result. A dynamic image route can accept a page identifier or other validated content, load the relevant title and visual data, and render a card. Vercel documents this approach using @vercel/og and ImageResponse; its example uses route parameters to vary the image. The following is the shape of an App Router route, not a complete application: connect the lookup to your own content source and adapt it to the exact framework version you deploy.

}For a real deployment, follow the current Vercel guide for package installation, route setup, fonts, and framework-specific details. Vercel’s documented setup lists Node.js 22 or newer and Next.js 12.2.3 or newer, and says the Next.js App Router includes the package. Those requirements can change; verify them against your deployed versions before implementation.
Keep the template within renderer limits
The documented renderer supports a subset of CSS, including flexbox but not CSS Grid. Its documented supported font formats are ttf, otf, and woff, and its bundle limit is 500 KB. These constraints matter if your design depends on complex layout or large font and image assets. Check the current documentation rather than assuming ordinary browser CSS support.

Make URLs safe and cacheable
Do not treat arbitrary query-string content as trusted markup or fetch arbitrary URLs supplied by visitors. Resolve a validated page identifier to known content, escape or safely render text, and use a predictable fallback for missing records. If a card URL varies with a slug or other parameters, make sure the cache key distinguishes the variants and that a content change cannot leave an old image served indefinitely.
Vercel says @vercel/og adds CDN caching headers to reduce recomputation and cost. Check the response and your hosting configuration to understand the actual cache behavior for your route; set an invalidation or versioning strategy appropriate to how quickly your content changes.

Publish the image in social metadata
Generating an image is only half the job. The page being shared must expose its public, absolute image URL in its HTML metadata. For example, if the route above is reachable at https://example.com/og?slug=example, the relevant metadata can look like this:

<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/og?slug=example">Vercel’s deployment metadata documentation says twitter:image may reference a static or dynamic image and that og:image serves as a fallback. Setting both explicitly can make the intended image clear to consumers. Ensure the tags are present in the HTML response social crawlers receive, not only added later by client-side JavaScript. Make the image accessible to crawlers
The metadata image URL needs to be fetchable without a user login or a browser-only session. Vercel recommends allowing its OG image API routes in robots.txt so social providers can retrieve them; see its OG image API guidance. Also check that the route does not require authentication, is not blocked by firewall or bot-protection rules, returns the image rather than an HTML error page, and handles redirects predictably.

Preview systems can cache old metadata and differ in how they fetch pages and images. Test the deployed page with the preview tools or sharing workflow for each platform you care about, and recheck after changing metadata or image URLs.

Pick dimensions and design for the target platforms
Published recommendations are close but not identical: Vercel recommends 1200×630 pixels in documentation last updated in 2025, while Cloudinary’s 2022 article calls 1200×627 pixels the most frequently recommended size. Neither number is a universal mandate. Check current specifications for the platforms you intend to support, then use one consistent canvas unless a platform requires something different. Design for the small preview as well as the full-size image: keep the page title prominent, avoid placing essential text at the edges, and check that variable-length titles do not overflow or obscure other content. These are practical design checks, not platform-specific guarantees.
Use an image transformation workflow when assets already exist
If your cards start with existing photography or illustrations, a transformation URL can be simpler than rendering a full layout in application code. Cloudinary describes using its transformation API to resize or crop an image and add text or graphic overlays, then placing the generated image URL in social metadata. This suits workflows where the source asset is the main visual and the card needs repeatable transformations rather than a wholly custom page composition. Review Cloudinary’s social sharing image article and transformation reference for its own current syntax and terms.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect previews
- No image appears: Open the exact
og:imageURL without signing in. Confirm it returns an image, is publicly reachable, and is not blocked byrobots.txt, authentication, or network rules. - The preview uses an old card: Social systems may cache page metadata or image responses. Change the image URL when content changes if necessary, and use the platform’s available preview-refresh mechanism.
- Every page shows the same card: Check that the metadata points to the page-specific route or transformation URL and that the route actually uses the page identifier to load different content.
- The route returns an error or blank image: Check deployment logs, missing content, invalid parameters, unsupported CSS or fonts, and whether the implementation fits the documented runtime and bundle limits.
- The title is clipped or unreadable: Test short and long titles at the intended dimensions. Adjust line length, font size, spacing, or fallback behavior within the renderer’s supported CSS.
- It works in a browser but not in a preview: Confirm the crawler gets the metadata in the initial HTML, can fetch the image without cookies, and is not receiving a bot challenge or different response.
