Playwright can save a browser screenshot, but scheduling automated Google Search captures does not make the access permitted. Google says automated Search access for rank-checking without express permission violates its spam policies and Terms of Service. Use this workflow only for a target you are authorized to access, or obtain express permission first.
Check permission before scheduling Google Search captures
Google Search Central explicitly includes “scraping results for rank-checking purposes or other types of automated access to Google Search conducted without express permission” in its description of machine-generated traffic that violates its spam policies and Terms of Service. See Google’s Search spam policies and Google’s Terms. A rotating schedule, random start time, or slower cadence does not itself grant permission or change that policy concern. Do not use this guide to evade bot checks or automate unpermitted rank tracking.

For recurring captures, use a data source expressly permitted for your purpose, or get permission. The Playwright example below demonstrates the browser-and-scheduler pattern for such an authorized target; Playwright’s screenshot API documents how to capture a page, not permission to access Google Search.

This example uses Node.js and the Playwright package. From a new project directory, install the package and its browser:

Save a timestamped screenshot
Create capture.mjs. Set TARGET_URL to the exact page you are permitted to capture. The script uses a fixed viewport, waits for the page load event, writes a timestamped PNG, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

}Playwright’s Page API documents page.screenshot() and its options. The example captures the full page; remove fullPage: true for a viewport-only image. Choose a deliberate wait condition for your target: load waits for the load event, while an application that renders content later may need a documented readiness condition or a locator wait before capture. Avoid treating a fixed delay as proof that the page is complete.

Run the capture on a recurring schedule
Choose an execution environment available when each run is due: a machine you administer or a hosted runner with browser support. There is no universal scheduler command because setup depends on the host and operating system. Configure that host’s scheduler to invoke node /absolute/path/to/capture.mjs at the intended times, with TARGET_URL and any viewport or output variables set in its environment.

Keep each run observable: record the scheduled time, actual start time, success or failure, and output path; alert or otherwise surface failures. Ensure the scheduler does not overlap runs if a previous capture is still active.

Keep captures comparable and controlled
- Use a consistent viewport and browser version when visual comparisons matter; changes in either can change layout.
- Use a sanitized timestamp in each filename so a later run does not silently overwrite an earlier image.
- Set retention and access controls appropriate to the page contents. A screenshot may contain personal or confidential information.
- Decide how the scheduler handles retries and missed runs. Log retries separately so they are not mistaken for scheduled captures.
- Do not randomize timing or alter browser behavior to avoid access controls. Confirm that the data source permits the intended frequency and use.
Screenshot assertions are optional
For a simple archive, saving a file with page.screenshot() is enough; a test assertion is not required. Playwright’s PageAssertions documentation says toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots are stable before comparing against an expectation, and that screenshot assertions work only with Playwright Test. Use it when the goal is visual regression testing in that test runner, not merely to save a scheduled image.
Google Search screenshot presentation
If you have permission to capture and publish a Search screenshot, Google’s Search screenshot guidelines ask that Search be shown realistically and without interface changes, that the screenshot not imply Google endorsement, and that requested trademark attribution accompany images. They also call for relevant third-party content approvals where required. Google says permission is not needed for screenshots in print for educational or instructional purposes; that does not remove separate third-party rights or other applicable restrictions. For advertising uses, Google approval is required.

Troubleshooting scheduled captures
- The script says
TARGET_URLis missing: the scheduler may not inherit your interactive shell’s environment. Set the variable in the scheduler’s job configuration or in a protected environment file loaded by the script. - Chromium fails to launch: confirm that Playwright’s browser was installed in the same environment used by the scheduled job. A hosted runner may need its own browser installation step.
- Navigation times out or returns no response: check network access, the URL, and whether the target is available to that environment. Do not bypass a bot check; resolve permission and access with the site owner or use an expressly permitted source.
- The screenshot is incomplete: the page may render important content after the load event. Wait for a relevant page-specific selector or readiness signal, then capture; do not assume a longer arbitrary delay always solves it.
- Runs overwrite one another or overlap: retain the timestamped filename, verify that the scheduler cannot start a second process before the first ends, and inspect actual run timestamps in the log.
- No one notices a failed job: configure the chosen scheduler or host to report nonzero exits, and preserve the structured failure record and error output.
