To capture a website page beyond the visible browser window, use Firefox or Chrome DevTools for a one-off screenshot, or Playwright when you need repeatable captures. Set the viewport to the device or dimensions reviewers should assess, wait for the page to reach the intended state, then inspect the saved image before sharing it.
Full-page capture or visible-viewport capture?
A full-page screenshot includes content beyond the browser’s current viewport; a regular screenshot shows only what is visible on screen. Use the full page to review hierarchy, content flow, and overall structure. Capture a single element instead when feedback is about a header, card, or other component. Chrome DevTools documentation describes both visible-viewport and full-size capture, while Playwright’s screenshot API exposes a full-page option.

Choose a capture method
| Method | Best for | Viewport and repeatability | Element capture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox DevTools | A manual capture in an open browser | Uses the current page and browser context; manual | Yes, with “Screenshot Node” |
| Chrome DevTools | A manual capture with a chosen device or viewport | Device Mode supports dimensions and orientation; manual | Yes, with node screenshots |
| Playwright | Recurring reviews or test artifacts | Set through your browser automation; scriptable | Screenshot options support a target element, but element targeting does not combine with `fullPage` in the documented screenshot tool |
| Chrome Headless | A simple command-line capture | Set a window size and timeout; command-line repeatable | Not established by the cited command-line documentation |
Capture a full-page screenshot in Firefox
- Open the page you want to review and open Firefox DevTools.
- In DevTools Settings, find “Available Toolbox Buttons” and enable “Take a screenshot of the entire page” if it is not already available.
- Use the whole-page screenshot button. Mozilla says the image is saved to the browser’s Downloads directory.
- Open the saved image and check the top, middle, and bottom before sharing.
For a focused component capture, right-click its node in the Inspector and select “Screenshot Node.” Mozilla also documents the Web Console command :screenshot <filename.png> --fullpage as an alternative for people comfortable using the console. See Firefox’s screenshot instructions and DevTools tips.
Capture a full-size screenshot in Chrome
- Open DevTools and switch on Device Mode.
- Choose the device or enter the dimensions and orientation the design review should assess.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu and select “Capture a full size screenshot.” This captures the whole page, including content outside the visible viewport. “Capture screenshot” captures only the visible viewport.
- Open the resulting image and check that the expected page sections appear correctly.
For a single component, Chrome DevTools also supports node screenshots, including content below the fold. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation and its node screenshot guide.

Automate recurring captures with Playwright
After navigating to the page in a Playwright script, save a full-page image with:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'design-review.png', fullPage: true });
The fullPage option captures the full scrollable page rather than only the current viewport. Choose the viewport in your browser context before capture so repeated review images use the same dimensions. Playwright’s screenshot documentation also describes image type and scale options. CSS scale uses CSS-pixel sizing; device scale uses the device pixel ratio for a higher-resolution image. A higher pixel count can help when zooming into a long page, but it can also increase file size. The useful choice depends on how the image will be reviewed. The documented screenshot tool does not combine an element target with fullPage. See the Page screenshot API and Playwright screenshot tool documentation.
Use Chrome Headless for a command-line capture
Chrome’s headless command-line documentation shows the --screenshot option with --headless and --window-size. For example:

chrome --headless --screenshot=design-review.png --window-size=1440,1000 https://example.com
Replace https://example.com with the page you need. Chrome also documents a --timeout option to set the maximum wait before screenshot content is captured, even if the page is still loading. A fixed delay is not proof that a particular site’s interactions or deferred sections have finished. Check Chrome’s headless command-line documentation for current command details.
Prepare the image so reviewers can interpret it
Choose the review context
Decide whether the feedback concerns the entire page or one component. A full-page capture helps reviewers follow the overall structure; an element capture keeps attention on a specific component. Playwright’s screenshot guide describes screenshots as useful for visual layout verification and bug documentation.
Set and label the viewport
For responsive review, select the intended device dimensions and orientation before taking the screenshot. Add that context to the filename or review note—for example, “product-page-mobile-390×844.png”—so reviewers know what they are looking at. The filename is a suggested convention, not a required browser setting.

Wait for the intended page state
Allow initial rendering, relevant animations, and asynchronous content to settle. If a page appears incomplete, Chrome DevTools’ Network panel can capture a sequence of screenshots during loading alongside network activity, which can help identify whether the image reflects an intermediate state. A timeout alone cannot confirm that all site-specific content is ready. See Chrome’s Network panel documentation.
Inspect before sharing
- Check the beginning, middle, and end of the image for missing sections.
- Look for sticky headers or other fixed elements repeated in unexpected places.
- Check for overlays, consent banners, or popups obscuring content.
- Confirm that deferred or lazy-loaded sections appeared in the capture.
- Verify that the image dimensions and readability suit the review channel.
Capture controls do not guarantee that every dynamic page or lazy-loading approach will render perfectly on the first attempt. Inspection—and, where needed, scrolling through the page before capturing—is a practical safeguard.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its clean-capture options accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

Frequently asked questions
Does a full-page screenshot change the page’s actual layout?
It captures the page beyond the visible viewport; for responsive comparisons, set the intended viewport before capture so the image represents the layout reviewers need to assess.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I capture just one section instead of the whole page?
Yes. Firefox and Chrome DevTools support node or element screenshots; this is a better fit for focused component feedback than a whole-page image.
Should I use CSS scale or device scale?
Use CSS scale when CSS-pixel sizing is what matters; use device scale when you need output based on device pixel ratio and greater pixel detail. Consider the resulting image size and how reviewers will inspect it.
