How to Capture Full-Page Screenshots for Argos CI Visual Tests

Use Argos’s Playwright helper with fullPage: true, configure its reporter and CI authentication, and establish a default-branch baseline for visual comparisons.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a Playwright test integrated with Argos, pass { fullPage: true } to the Argos screenshot helper: await argosScreenshot(page, "homepage", { fullPage: true }); This captures the page beyond the visible viewport. You still need the Argos Playwright package, its reporter in your Playwright configuration, and CI authentication; a default-branch run establishes the baseline for pull-request comparisons.

Set up Argos with Playwright

  1. Install and configure Playwright in your project and CI environment, then create an Argos project.
  2. Add @argos-ci/playwright as a development dependency.
  3. Register @argos-ci/playwright/reporter in playwright.config.ts. Follow the Argos Playwright Quickstart for the current reporter configuration and upload settings.
  4. In a Playwright test, navigate to the page and call the helper with a stable screenshot name:
import { argosScreenshot } from "@argos-ci/playwright";

// Inside a Playwright test, after the page has reached the state to capture:
await page.goto("https://example.com");
await argosScreenshot(page, "homepage", { fullPage: true });

The official Argos example uses the fullPage option. Check the package’s current quickstart for any import or setup changes relevant to the version installed.

Configure CI and establish a baseline

Run the test in CI with Argos authentication configured. The quickstart uses ARGOS_TOKEN; for GitHub Actions it also describes OIDC or tokenless authentication. Its workflow example checks out the code, sets up Node, installs packages, installs Chromium with dependencies, and runs Playwright tests. Adapt runtime and action versions to what your project supports instead of copying example versions blindly.

Run the default branch before expecting normal pull-request comparisons. Argos says pull-request builds appear as orphan builds until a default-branch build establishes a baseline. The quickstart also says screenshots are saved to ./screenshots by default and suggests adding that directory to .gitignore. It demonstrates uploading Playwright failure screenshots and traces as well.

Keep full-page captures stable

A full-page image contains more content than a viewport capture, so dynamic areas anywhere on the page can create visual differences. Make the page state deterministic before comparing screenshots:

  • Wait for the content you care about to finish loading; avoid captures while data or animations are still changing.
  • Keep fonts and images settled. Argos’s current guide says its helper waits for fonts, images, and network idle, and hides carets and scrollbars.
  • Use fixed or controlled data where possible, and avoid live timestamps or other values that change between runs.
  • Mask or hide regions that are intentionally variable. Playwright supports masks and screenshot styling; a targeted mask is usually preferable to loosening comparison thresholds broadly.
  • Keep browser and operating-system rendering consistent when creating and checking native Playwright baselines. Fonts and anti-aliasing can differ across environments.

Start with strict visual comparison. If a known, legitimate rendering jitter remains, adjust a pixel or ratio tolerance such as maxDiffPixels only as much as needed. Consult the Playwright screenshot documentation for the API and behavior supported by your installed Playwright version.

Choose between native Playwright snapshots and Argos review

Both approaches can capture full pages. The difference is principally how baselines and review are managed, not whether Playwright can take the screenshot.

Approach Baseline and review Fits best when
Playwright toHaveScreenshot Baselines are kept alongside the test in the repository; the team reviews and updates them there. You want repository-managed snapshots and a local review workflow.
Argos with Playwright Playwright captures the page and the integration uploads screenshots for hosted comparison and pull-request review. You want hosted visual review and pull-request comparison.

Consider where baselines live, how approvals and updates work, how diffs are reviewed, how cross-platform rendering is handled, and the service cost. Argos is an option, not a requirement for full-page capture. See the Argos visual regression guide for its discussion of the hosted workflow and comparison with native snapshots.

Troubleshooting common CI failures

The screenshot runs locally but the CI comparison fails

Check whether the CI browser, operating system, fonts, or page data differ from the environment used to create the baseline. Keep rendering conditions consistent and stabilize changing content before relaxing diff thresholds.

Pull-request builds appear as orphan builds

Run a build on the default branch first so Argos has a baseline for pull-request comparisons.

Argos does not receive screenshots from CI

Check that the reporter is registered in playwright.config.ts, upload is enabled as intended, and the CI job has a supported authentication method configured. For GitHub Actions, consult the quickstart’s token, OIDC, or tokenless setup rather than assuming a local credential is available in CI.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a screenshot file rather than a Playwright visual test, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of a URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. For Argos-based visual regression, use the Playwright integration above; this API is an alternative when you need screenshot capture without setting up a browser test.
