Yes. A screenshot API can capture an iframe’s displayed content when the browser successfully renders it. For the whole page, request a page screenshot; to capture only the iframe’s visible rectangle, use the API’s element or selector capture if it supports one. If you need to target a particular element inside the frame, use browser automation with a frame locator. These are different jobs: capturing rendered pixels does not require the parent page’s JavaScript to read a cross-origin iframe’s DOM, but the actual result depends on the embed and its loading, access, and rendering behavior.

Why cross-origin iframes can still appear in screenshots
A page’s JavaScript may be prevented from reading a cross-origin iframe’s DOM. That restriction is not the same as a prohibition on the browser rendering the iframe or on a screenshot of the rendered page. A screenshot endpoint captures rendered pixels; when the iframe has loaded and is visible, those pixels can include its content without the parent script traversing the frame’s DOM. The exact outcome still depends on the screenshot API, target site, frame configuration, authentication, embed policy, and loading state. Cloudflare Browser Run documents rendering a page before capture and provides selector-based capture, but its documentation does not promise uniform results for every frame type (Cloudflare Browser Run documentation).

Capture the whole page or just the iframe rectangle
Whole-page composition
Use the endpoint’s ordinary page screenshot when you want the iframe in context with the surrounding page. For example, Cloudflare Browser Run documents a /screenshot endpoint that renders HTML and JavaScript before taking the screenshot. Make sure the capture waits long enough for the embed to render; a screenshot taken too early can show a placeholder or empty frame.

When the API supports an element selector, target the iframe element to crop to its displayed bounds. Cloudflare documents a selector option for capturing a specific page element. Check the returned image rather than assuming that a generic selector works for every iframe provider, nested frame, or sandbox configuration. The endpoint documentation describes required url or html input, screenshot configuration, viewport options, and a selector example (Cloudflare Browser Run documentation).

Target a node inside a frame with Playwright
If you need an element inside the iframe rather than a crop around the iframe itself, browser automation can enter a selected frame. Playwright’s frameLocator() locates elements inside an iframe; locator screenshots can capture an individual node, while page screenshots capture page scope. The iframe selector identifies the frame element in the parent page; the second selector identifies a node within that frame. Playwright frame locators use strict matching, so a selector that matches multiple frames can fail rather than choosing one arbitrarily. If you only need the iframe as displayed, a frame locator is unnecessary: use page capture or capture the iframe element itself.

What can affect the result
- Load timing: an iframe may load after the parent page’s DOM is ready. Wait for the relevant frame content or a suitable delay before capture.
- Lazy loading: embedded content may not load until it is scrolled into view. Scroll to the iframe or use an appropriate full-page capture option, then check the output.
- Authentication: the embed may require a logged-in session or cookies. The screenshot browser needs the appropriate access context for the content to render.
- Embed restrictions: the target site or frame configuration may prevent the content from loading in the page where it is embedded.
- Viewport and scroll position: the iframe may show different content depending on its size or internal scroll state. Confirm the selected viewport and visible area match your need.
- Overlays and clipping: consent UI, sticky elements, clipping, or overlapping content can obscure the iframe or its edges. Inspect the produced image.
When browser screen capture is the right choice
getDisplayMedia() is a separate browser-native route for user-mediated screen sharing. The browser asks the user to choose and confirm a surface; it returns a media stream, not a silent server-side screenshot. MDN states: “Before streaming of captured screen contents can begin, the user agent will ask the user to confirm the sharing request, and to select the content to share.” See MDN’s Screen Capture API guide.
MDN also describes Element Capture, which targets an element and its descendants as a DOM subtree, and Region Capture, which captures a tab area defined by an element’s bounding box. A still frame can be obtained from a captured track with ImageCapture.grabFrame() and encoded through a canvas. This remains a user-authorized capture workflow, not a replacement for a backend screenshot endpoint. Screen-capture use in an iframe may also be governed by the display-capture Permissions Policy directive and an iframe’s allow attribute.
Chrome’s Element Capture article describes capturing an embedded third-party application in an iframe for transmission as video; Element Capture can crop away overlapping or occluded material. Use this route when the product is a user-approved live capture, not when a service needs to take unattended page screenshots.

The screenshot shows a blank or incomplete iframe
- Wait for the frame’s content, not only the parent document, before capture.
- Check whether the embed is lazy-loaded and bring it into view if necessary.
- Open the target page in a browser under the same authentication conditions and confirm the embed itself renders.
The whole page is captured, but the iframe-only selector fails
- Confirm the selector identifies the iframe element in the parent document.
- Check whether the API supports selector or element capture and follow its documented selector syntax.
- If the frame is nested or otherwise unusual, validate with the target embed; generic selector documentation does not guarantee every frame case.
The inner element cannot be located
- Use a frame-aware locator such as Playwright’s
frameLocator()before locating the inner node. - Make sure the frame selector identifies a single intended iframe and that the node becomes visible before taking its screenshot.
- Check authentication and embed restrictions; frame-aware automation does not override them.
A browser screen-capture request does not start automatically
getDisplayMedia() requires the user to select and approve a capture surface. If an iframe is involved, check whether the applicable Permissions Policy and iframe allow configuration permit the feature. This user-prompt flow is not suitable for unattended server captures.

Does the iframe need to be same-origin?
Not merely for its rendered pixels to appear in a page screenshot. Same-origin restrictions affect script access to the frame’s DOM; whether a screenshot contains the expected visual content depends on successful rendering and the API and embed behavior.
Can I screenshot only the iframe?
Yes, if the screenshot API supports selector or element capture and can capture the iframe element. That targets its displayed rectangle, not a particular DOM node inside it.
