For a screenshot-only capture, use Cloudflare Browser Rendering’s account-specific POST /accounts/{account_id}/browser-rendering/screenshot endpoint. Choose the separate snapshot endpoint when you also need page HTML or another supported snapshot output. You’ll need a Cloudflare account ID and an API token with the Browser Rendering Write permission.
Choose the right endpoint
- Screenshot: use
POST /accounts/{account_id}/browser-rendering/screenshotfor a direct screenshot operation. See Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering API overview. - Snapshot: use
POST /accounts/{account_id}/browser-rendering/snapshotwhen you need the page’s HTML along with a screenshot or other supported output. Cloudflare documents that it “Returns the page’s HTML content and screenshot”; the screenshot in the snapshot response is base64 encoded. See the snapshot create reference.
The routes are distinct, and their request schemas should not be assumed interchangeable. The examples below show the documented snapshot operation; check the current schema for the direct screenshot route before adapting fields to it.
Prepare your account and token
- Find your Cloudflare account ID.
- Create an API token scoped to the
Browser Rendering Writepermission. Cloudflare recommends API tokens for authorization. - Keep the token private. Send it as a bearer token in the
Authorizationheader, and avoid embedding it in a public web page or a committed source file.
Capture a screenshot with the snapshot endpoint
This cURL example requests a snapshot for a URL. Replace the account ID and token with your own values, and select fields supported by the current snapshot schema.

Inspect the JSON response for the screenshot field. For the snapshot route, the documented screenshot is base64 encoded; decode that value to save it as an image. The API reference is authoritative for required fields and response details, which can change.
Set page timing and screenshot extent
Wait for the page condition you need
Navigation behavior can be set with gotoOptions. Its documented waitUntil choices include load, domcontentloaded, networkidle0, and networkidle2. These conditions represent different points in page loading; there is no single wait choice that guarantees every site’s content is ready.

For dynamic pages, use a supported waitFor* setting when a particular selector or timeout is the meaningful readiness signal. Select the condition based on the page: waiting for a stable element can be more useful than waiting for all network activity to stop on a site with persistent requests.
Choose the capture region and format

These are documented screenshot controls, but confirm the exact field shape and supported combinations in the reference for the endpoint you call. A full-page image can be much larger than a viewport capture, while a clip can keep an output focused on a specific area.

Inspect responses and handle failures
Check the HTTP status and response body rather than treating every response as an image. The snapshot route returns structured data, including a base64 screenshot field when requested. A failed request may point to authorization, account routing, invalid request fields, or a page navigation problem; use the returned error details to distinguish them.
Troubleshooting
- Unauthorized or forbidden response: confirm the bearer token is valid, belongs to the intended account, and has
Browser Rendering Writepermission. - Request validation error: compare the submitted JSON with the schema for the exact route. Do not copy snapshot fields to the direct screenshot route without checking its reference.
- Screenshot is missing or not an image file: inspect whether the response is JSON containing a base64 value, as on the documented snapshot route, and decode the screenshot field rather than saving the whole response as an image.
- Content is absent or incomplete: adjust
gotoOptions.waitUntilor use a supportedwaitFor*condition tied to the page’s content. A navigation event alone may not mean that client-rendered content is ready. - Capture is unexpectedly cropped or very large: check the viewport,
fullPage, andclipsettings and choose the extent appropriate to the output. - Request is throttled: check your plan’s current rate limit and usage in Cloudflare. The published REST API rate is plan-dependent and has changed over time.
Plan for usage, rate limits, and cost
Cloudflare announced on July 28, 2025 that Browser Rendering billing would begin August 20, 2025. That announcement listed a Workers Free allowance of 10 minutes per day and 3 concurrent browsers; Workers Paid included 10 hours per month and 10 concurrent browsers averaged monthly. It listed additional Workers Paid REST API usage at $0.09 per browser hour and $2.00 per additional concurrent browser. These are figures in that dated announcement, not a guarantee of current account terms. Check the pricing announcement and your Cloudflare dashboard before estimating ongoing use.

A March 4, 2026 changelog reports that the Browser Rendering REST API rate limit for Workers Paid plans increased from 3 requests per second (180 per minute) to 10 requests per second (600 per minute).
