To capture a page with its below-the-fold images, trigger those images to load before taking a full-page screenshot. A full-page option captures the document’s scrollable area, but it does not necessarily make lazy-loaded media load. Scroll through the page, verify image readiness, let layout settle, then capture with a fixed browser and viewport.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss images
Lazy loading defers some images and other resources until they are near the viewport. As MDN explains, “Lazy loading is a strategy to identify resources as non-blocking (non-critical) and load these only when needed.” The browser’s ordinary load event can fire while off-screen lazy-loaded media remains unloaded. MDN’s lazy-loading guide describes this behavior and the ways loading can be deferred.

A full-page screenshot expands the captured area to the page’s full scrollable document; it does not necessarily scroll the page or trigger every lazy-loading mechanism. Playwright documents the option as fullPage: true. Playwright screenshot documentation

Repeatable workflow
- Fix the capture environment. Use the same browser/runtime version, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, page state, and font and asset availability for each run. Control animations and changing content where possible.
- Navigate, but do not treat navigation completion as visual readiness. A
loadorDOMContentLoadedevent is not proof that deferred media has loaded. Nor is network quiet a reliable substitute: Playwright definesnetworkidleas at least 500 ms with no network connections and discourages it as a testing readiness condition. Lazy resources may not have been requested yet. Playwright load-state documentation - Scroll progressively through the content. Move down the document in steps, pausing so the page’s observers or other lazy-loading logic can request and render content. Re-read the document height as you go. If scrolling adds content, continue until the intended capture extent is reached and the height is stable. There is no universally correct step size or pause; tune them for the page.
- Check images and page-specific readiness. For ordinary
<img>elements, inspectcompleteand verify thatnaturalWidthandnaturalHeightare nonzero. Thecompleteproperty alone does not establish that the image rendered successfully: a failed image can also be complete. Check known loading indicators and any CSS backgrounds or script-managed placeholders separately. - Wait for layout to settle, then capture. Use the full-page option only after the page has reached the required visual state. For Playwright JavaScript, that is
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });.
Playwright JavaScript example
This example progressively scrolls, rechecks page height as content grows, waits for image load or error events, and writes a full-page PNG. The 700-pixel increment and 250 ms pause are tuning examples, not guarantees. The image wait has a timeout so one broken or stalled image cannot hold the script forever.

await page.waitForTimeout(250); // Tune for layout changes on the target page.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Adapt this to the target site rather than treating it as a universal drop-in. The loop bounds repeated growth; for an infinite feed, choose a deliberate stopping point. If image verification identifies failures, investigate them rather than assuming the screenshot is complete. The example only checks document images: CSS backgrounds, nested scrolling containers, and application-specific placeholders need their own readiness checks.
Keep repeated captures visually consistent
- Keep viewport size, device scale, browser/runtime version, and page state fixed.
- Make sure the same fonts and assets are available, and account for content that changes between runs.
- Disable or stabilize animations when they affect the capture.
- Use the same scroll-and-wait procedure each time, but validate its timing against the specific page.
For visual regression tests, Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot assertion waits until two successive screenshots match before comparing. This can reduce variation from transient visual changes; it does not trigger lazy-loaded resources that were never requested. The assertion is part of the Playwright test runner. Troubleshooting missing or inconsistent images
Images below the fold are blank
Confirm that the capture actually scrolled through the relevant content and allowed the page time to request and render it. Recheck document height after scrolling if new sections appear. A full-page option alone does not guarantee that off-screen images were loaded.

The image reports complete but looks broken
Check its natural dimensions and inspect the browser’s page-specific loading state. A completed request may have failed or left a placeholder. CSS background images and JavaScript-controlled image components are not covered by a check of document.images.
Scrolling does not load a particular image
Find out whether it is an ordinary image, a background, or a script-managed placeholder. Check whether it sits inside a nested scroll container; scrolling the document may not trigger that container’s loading behavior. Use the page’s own readiness signal where available.

The page keeps growing
Infinite-scroll pages may append content as you move down. Recheck height and decide explicitly how much of the feed to capture. A bounded loop or other stopping condition prevents a capture job from chasing an unending stream of new content.

ScreenshotNeo offers an API and MCP server for website screenshots. Its full-page capture can load lazy images. Before a capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and parameters. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot automatically load every lazy image?
No. It captures the scrollable page area, but deferred images may need scrolling or page-specific interaction before they load.
Is waiting for network idle enough?
No. A lazy-loaded resource may not have been requested yet, and Playwright discourages network idle as a test-readiness condition.
