Cypress automatically captures a screenshot when a test fails during cypress run, including in CI. The default output folder is cypress/screenshots. To retrieve those files after the job ends, configure your CI provider to upload that folder as a job artifact; if you record runs to Cypress Cloud, you can also view screenshots there. Use cy.screenshot() for intentional checkpoints.
How Cypress screenshots work in CI
Cypress can take screenshots in both cypress open and cypress run. In a CI job, automatic screenshots are most useful when a test fails: screenshotOnRunFailure is enabled by default, so Cypress saves a failure screenshot during cypress run.

Capturing a file and retaining it are separate steps. Cypress writes the image into the job’s filesystem; your CI provider must preserve it as an artifact if you want to download it after the runner exits. Cypress Cloud is another way to view screenshots for recorded runs.
Make failure screenshots available after the job
- Run Cypress in CI. Use
cypress runor the CI provider’s Cypress integration. For GitHub Actions, Cypress maintains an official action and documents a workflow that checks out the project, builds and starts the application, then runs Cypress. Its documentation recommends thev7major tag; action tags and workflow syntax can change, so follow the current guide at Cypress GitHub Actions documentation. - Check the output folder and capture setting. The default
screenshotsFolderiscypress/screenshots, andscreenshotOnRunFailuredefaults totrue. Make sure the project has not changed either setting in its Cypress configuration or throughCypress.Screenshot.defaults(). - Upload the folder as a CI artifact. Add your provider’s artifact-upload step for the configured screenshots folder. Configure that step to run even if the Cypress test command fails; otherwise, the failed job may discard the very screenshots you need to diagnose it.
- Download or inspect the artifact. Use your provider’s job interface to retrieve the uploaded files. Artifact syntax, access controls, and retention periods depend on the provider and workflow settings; there is no single provider-neutral YAML step.

Use Cypress Cloud instead of downloading artifacts
If your team records CI runs to Cypress Cloud, screenshots from those runs can be viewed there. This avoids a separate artifact download for that review path, but it depends on the team’s recording configuration and access to the relevant run. Cloud viewing does not automatically create downloadable artifacts in your CI job.
For broader visual testing, Cypress distinguishes ordinary test screenshots from workflows that manage visual baselines and review image differences. See its visual testing guide for that separate use case.

Capture a deliberate checkpoint with cy.screenshot()
Use cy.screenshot() when you want an image at a particular point in a test rather than only when it fails. Place it after the assertions or readiness checks that establish the state you want to inspect:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
it('shows the saved confirmation', () => {
cy.visit('/settings');
cy.get('[data-cy=save]').click();
cy.contains('Settings saved').should('be.visible');
cy.screenshot('settings-saved');
});
Manual screenshots default to fullPage mode. You can choose viewport to capture only the visible browser area, or runner to include Cypress’s browser and command-log context. The API also accepts a filename and options; consult the Cypress screenshot command reference for the supported options.

Screenshot capture is asynchronous. Cypress documents that it takes around 100 ms, during which the application can change; it is not a guarantee that the image reflects the exact instant the command was issued. Synchronize on the desired application state before calling it. Full-page capture scrolls and stitches the page, so fixed or sticky elements may appear more than once.
Settings and file behavior to check
| Setting or behavior | Default or effect | What to check in CI |
|---|---|---|
screenshotsFolder |
cypress/screenshots |
Point the artifact upload step at the configured path, not necessarily the default. |
screenshotOnRunFailure |
true |
If failure images are missing, check whether configuration or Cypress.Screenshot.defaults() disabled it. |
trashAssetsBeforeRuns |
true |
Cypress clears the screenshots folder’s contents, including nested files, before a run. Set it to false only when preserving existing contents is intentional. |
| Automatic failure filename | The generated test name with (failed) appended |
Look for the test-specific failure file in the output folder. |
| Manual duplicate filenames | Numeric suffixes are added unless overwrite is enabled | Use distinct names or the documented overwrite option if repeated runs should replace a file. |
See Cypress’s configuration reference for current setting details. Screenshots and videos are commonly excluded from source control because they are generated test assets; retain them as CI artifacts when the team needs them. Cypress discusses this in its test asset organization guide.
Troubleshoot missing or unhelpful screenshots
- No failure screenshot appears: Confirm the job runs
cypress run, the test actually failed, andscreenshotOnRunFailurehas not been turned off. - The folder is empty after the job: Check whether Cypress wrote to a custom
screenshotsFolderand whether the upload step targets that exact path. - The test failed but no artifact can be downloaded: Ensure the upload step runs on failure, not only after a successful test command. Also verify the provider’s artifact retention and permissions.
- Older images disappear between runs: This is expected with the default
trashAssetsBeforeRuns: true, which clears the folder before a run. - The captured page is at the wrong state: Wait for a visible element, network-dependent result, or other meaningful readiness condition before the screenshot. Capture is asynchronous, so avoid relying on an exact frame-time snapshot.
- A full-page image repeats a header or footer: Fixed and sticky elements can be duplicated when Cypress scrolls and stitches the page. Use viewport mode if a single visible viewport is what you need.
Or skip the browser setup
