A screenshot API can load a page and capture it automatically, but “redact” usually means hiding known page elements before capture—not automatically finding personal data or guaranteeing that it is permanently obscured. Identify what must be hidden, use a documented selector-based control where available, then inspect the resulting image before storing or sharing it.
What a screenshot API can—and cannot—redact
A hosted screenshot API takes a URL and capture settings, renders the page in a browser, and returns an image. Some APIs also let you hide selected page elements before the image is made. That is useful when you know which page elements contain information to conceal.

Do not treat element hiding as automatic sensitive-data detection. The reviewed documentation does not establish that these services scan for emails, credentials, payment details, or other personal information, and it does not promise irreversible redaction. A selector can miss content if the page changes or the sensitive value appears elsewhere.

Choose an API based on its documented controls
For a managed capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to try: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a free tier of 1,000 shots per month with no card. Those cleanup controls can help produce a less cluttered image, but they are not a substitute for hiding a specific sensitive field.
| API | Request shape | Documented capture or hiding controls | What the documentation does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | One GET request to the screenshot endpoint with a URL and options. | Its options include element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, selector waits, and the ability to hide selectors; it also removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Documentation | Automatic PII detection or a guarantee of irreversible redaction. |
| ScreenshotOne | GET and POST request patterns are documented in its Getting Started documentation. | hide_selectors hides matching elements by applying display: none !important. Options also include scripts and cookie-banner controls. Its agent overview describes waits and viewport, full-page, or selected-element capture. Options; agent overview |
Automatic PII detection or a guarantee of irreversible redaction. |
| Browserless | POST to /screenshot using its REST screenshot API. |
Its docs list full-page capture, format, quality, clip region, viewport, and selectors. Screenshot API documentation | Automatic PII detection or a guarantee of irreversible redaction. |
These documented controls are not a performance, price, uptime, privacy, or image-quality comparison. Choose based on the request pattern and capture controls your integration needs, and verify the output yourself.
Build a redaction workflow around known content
- Decide what should remain visible. List the sensitive fields and other elements to conceal. If you control the page, prefer stable, specific selectors rather than broad selectors that might hide unrelated content.
- Set the capture state. Choose viewport or full-page capture, any element or clip region, and a wait condition that lets the relevant page state render. Dynamic content, responsive layouts, and scripts can change what appears.
- Hide known elements before capture. Use the provider’s documented selector-hiding control where supported. For ScreenshotOne,
hide_selectorshides matches usingdisplay: none !important; it does not detect sensitive text on its own. For other APIs, confirm the exact behavior in their documentation before relying on it. - Send the request securely. Use HTTPS and keep API keys, cookies, authorization headers, and page credentials out of public client-side code. ScreenshotOne warns that HTTP does not encrypt requests and can expose API keys, authorization headers, cookies, and other sensitive data in transit. See its Getting Started documentation.
- Inspect the returned image. Check that the intended fields are absent, that nearby content remains usable, and that no sensitive value appears in another part of the page. Test representative page states and responsive sizes before automating storage or sharing.
ScreenshotOne example: hide known selectors
ScreenshotOne documents GET and POST request patterns. This cURL example uses its documented hide_selectors option to hide known elements before capture. Replace the sample selectors with selectors from the target page and use your own key. Confirm the current parameter syntax in the options documentation.

The selectors are examples, not universal patterns. Inspect the target page’s markup and verify that the resulting image hides the intended elements. display: none removes matching elements from the rendered screenshot; it does not securely erase information from the underlying website or prove that the same information is not visible elsewhere.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. The following cURL request uses the supplied example URL; its parameter names also work with the names used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify switching.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents—including Claude and Cursor—take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These cleanup and billing rules do not replace checking that a specific sensitive field has been concealed.

Validate the image before using it
- Check every sensitive field in the returned image rather than assuming a selector matched.
- Repeat the check for relevant page states, such as signed-in and signed-out views, and for each viewport size you capture.
- Look for content inserted dynamically, moved by responsive layout, or duplicated elsewhere on the page.
- Check that the hiding rule has not removed context necessary to interpret the screenshot.
- Limit access to stored screenshots when they may contain sensitive content; a pre-capture hiding rule is not proof that every copy or representation of that content is absent.
Troubleshooting common problems
The sensitive field still appears
The selector may not match the rendered element, the page may have changed, or the value may appear in another element. Inspect the page’s current markup, use a more specific stable selector, and check the whole image—not just the expected location.
The capture shows an incomplete or stale page
The page may not have finished rendering when the capture began. Use the provider’s documented wait controls, such as waiting for a selector, a browser event, or a delay where available, then test again. Recheck dynamic content and the chosen viewport.
The screenshot hides too much
A broad selector can match unrelated elements. Narrow the selector and inspect the resulting image to ensure useful context remains visible.

The image file is not usable
Confirm that the endpoint, request method, credentials, target URL, and output format are valid for the provider. A successful HTTP request alone does not prove that the image contains the correct page state; open and inspect the returned file.

The request may expose credentials
Use HTTPS. Keep API keys and any authorization headers or cookies on a protected server-side integration rather than in code shipped to visitors. ScreenshotOne explicitly warns that HTTP can expose these values in transit; see its security guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does selector hiding permanently redact information from a website?
No. It changes what is rendered in the screenshot; it does not remove the information from the site itself or establish irreversible redaction.
Can a screenshot API automatically detect all personal information?
The reviewed documentation does not establish automatic detection of emails, credentials, payment data, or other PII. Use known selectors and verify the final image.
