To capture a website at the current 8.3-inch iPad mini’s portrait layout size in desktop Chrome, set DevTools’ device viewport to 744 × 1133, then choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. The 744 × 1133 CSS-pixel viewport is a practical approximation based on Apple’s logical display dimensions—not a guarantee that desktop emulation will behave exactly like an iPad.
Set up the iPad mini viewport in Chrome
- Open the website in desktop Chrome, then open DevTools. You can use Chrome’s menu under More tools > Developer tools.
- In DevTools, click Toggle device toolbar. The page should appear in a responsive viewport with device dimensions controls.
- Open the device selector in the toolbar’s Dimensions area. If an iPad mini preset is available, select it and check the displayed width and height. If not, add a custom device using the device list’s edit/settings flow.
- For a custom device, enter a clear name such as iPad mini 8.3-inch, set width to 744 and height to 1133, then save and select it. Chrome requires a device name, width, and height; device pixel ratio, user agent, and device type are optional. See Chrome’s device mode guide and custom-device instructions.
- To check landscape, switch orientation or enter 1133 wide by 744 high. Confirm the dimensions shown in the toolbar before taking the screenshot.
Why use 744 × 1133?
Apple lists the current 8.3-inch iPad mini display as 744 × 1133 points, corresponding to a physical resolution of 1488 × 2266 pixels at 2×. Its technical specifications give the display resolution as 2266 by 1488 pixels. For desktop DevTools, 744 × 1133 is a practical CSS-pixel approximation of the logical portrait dimensions. This mapping is an inference from Apple’s point dimensions and 2× scale; Apple does not specify Chrome’s emulated CSS viewport. Do not enter 1488 × 2266 when your goal is to check the page’s logical layout dimensions. Sources: Apple’s layout guidance and iPad mini technical specifications.

Older iPad mini generations use different dimensions. For example, Apple lists the 7.9-inch model at 768 × 1024 points, so do not treat the current model’s viewport as a universal iPad mini size.

| Chrome option | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Capture screenshot | The content visible inside the emulated viewport | Reviewing a particular responsive screen state |
| Capture a full size screenshot | The full page, including content beyond the current viewport | Reviewing or documenting a long page from top to bottom |
Chrome’s device mode menu also supports showing a device frame in device-specific mode before capture. The frame changes presentation, not the page’s underlying compatibility with physical hardware. See Chrome’s documentation on device mode and screenshots.
What DevTools emulation can—and cannot—tell you
Chrome describes device mode as a “first-order approximation” of how a page looks and feels on a mobile device. It simulates a mobile experience on a desktop or laptop; it does not run the page on an iPad. A screenshot at 744 × 1133 is useful for checking responsive layout, but it does not establish real-device compatibility.

Troubleshooting
- The iPad mini preset is missing: Add a custom device through the device list’s edit/settings flow. Enter the name, width, and height; the other device fields are optional.
- The page layout looks too wide or too small: Check that you entered 744 × 1133 for portrait, not the physical 1488 × 2266 resolution. Confirm the toolbar still shows the intended dimensions after selecting the device.
- The screenshot is cut off at the bottom: You likely chose Capture screenshot, which captures only the visible viewport. Use Capture a full size screenshot for off-screen page content.
- The page looks different on the actual iPad: That can happen because desktop device mode is an approximation, not a physical-device test. Verify the behavior on the iPad when hardware or browser differences matter.
- The page has not finished rendering when captured: Wait for images and other page content to load, then capture again. A screenshot records the page state at the time of capture.
Or skip the browser setup
