Render the exact email draft in a browser, set a representative desktop or mobile-width viewport, and save either a viewport screenshot or a full-page capture. Label the file with the draft version and what it shows. That proof records one browser’s rendering at one moment; it does not establish how the email appears across Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, or other clients.
Prepare the email for a trustworthy proof
- Open the exact draft. Render the HTML version intended for review. If images, fonts, or other assets load remotely, confirm they have appeared before capture. Do not silently edit the HTML between rendering and sending the proof.
- Choose the view that matches the review. Use a desktop-width viewport for a desktop layout or browser device emulation for a mobile-width view. If the two layouts need separate scrutiny, make separate captures rather than shrinking one image until it is unreadable. Chrome documents responsive device emulation in Device Mode.
- Choose the capture extent. A viewport screenshot is typically easier to read at native scale; a full-page screenshot includes content below the fold. For an individual section, Firefox also supports capturing a selected element.
- Inspect the saved file. Check for clipped content, missing images, awkward scaling, and—if using PDF—unexpected page breaks before sharing it.
- Name and contextualize the proof. Include the email name or campaign, draft/version identifier, and whether the artifact is desktop or mobile-width and viewport-only or full-page. A capture date can help when drafts change. Ask for specific feedback or approval and keep the approved version associated with the proof.
Capture manually in Chrome or Firefox
Chrome DevTools
Open the rendered email in Chrome and open DevTools. If you need a mobile-width rendering, turn on the device toolbar and select or enter the viewport dimensions. In the DevTools Command Menu, search for the screenshot command and choose the visible-area or full-size screenshot option. Chrome’s documentation explains that a full-size capture includes page content outside the current viewport: Chrome DevTools screenshot and device documentation. The broader Chrome DevTools guide covers the developer tools interface.

Firefox DevTools
Firefox’s screenshot tools can capture a full page or a selected element in the Inspector. Its Web Console screenshot helper also supports the --fullpage option. See Mozilla’s screenshot documentation for the available workflows.
Make repeatable captures with Chrome Headless
For a repeatable command-line capture, Chrome Headless supports screenshot output, viewport sizing, a maximum wait interval, and PDF output. These examples assume Chrome is installed and available as chrome on your command path; use the executable path appropriate to your system if it is not.

Save a screenshot
chrome --headless --screenshot=email-proof.png --window-size=1280,900 --timeout=5000 file:///absolute/path/to/email-preview.html
Change the output filename and viewport dimensions as needed. The --timeout option sets the maximum interval before capture; it is not a guarantee that every remote asset or script has finished successfully. Review the image for missing or late-loading content.
Save a PDF
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=email-proof.pdf --no-pdf-header-footer --timeout=5000 file:///absolute/path/to/email-preview.html
PDF output can be useful when the review needs a printable or paginated artifact. Check page breaks and scaling, since a long email may span pages. Chrome’s current command-line options are documented in the Chrome Headless reference.

What a browser proof does—and does not—show
A browser screenshot establishes what the selected browser rendered for the captured HTML at the stated viewport and capture time, assuming the file corresponds to the identified draft. It can support feedback on copy, layout, imagery, hierarchy, and broad visual presentation.

Litmus distinguishes its Proof view—a real HTML view rendered by the desktop browser—from client-specific previews. Its Litmus Proof documentation makes that distinction explicitly. If the client needs confidence about rendering across their recipients’ email clients, use a separate email-client preview and QA workflow, then identify the clients and versions actually checked. Choose an image, PDF, or review service
| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport image | Readable review of the portion visible at one selected width | Capture separate desktop and mobile-width views when both matter. |
| Full-page image | One artifact showing the full email, including below-the-fold content | Ensure the resulting image remains legible when shared or viewed. |
| Printable or paginated review copy | Inspect page breaks, scaling, and headers or footers. | |
| Proofing and approval service | Reviewer comments or approval tracking in addition to a rendered view | Verify current plan access and sharing controls; a public link can be viewable by anyone who has it. |
| Email-client preview and QA | Checking the email in specified mail clients rather than a desktop browser | Report the tested client set separately from the browser proof. |
Litmus describes Proof as a collaboration and approval feature with desktop, mobile, and plain-text views; its documentation says Proof is available on Enterprise plans. Its public share links can be viewed by anyone with the link, so check current access and sharing settings before using one. See Proof details and Proof approvals. Litmus also documents HTML viewing in Previews & QA and notes that processed HTML downloads are available for emails sent in or synced from an ESP, not every email origin: View HTML in Previews & QA. Confirm current availability and plan terms directly with the service.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- Images are missing: Check that the rendered draft can reach the remote asset URLs and wait for them to load before capturing. Compare the capture with the same browser page rather than assuming the screenshot tool repaired the source.
- The screenshot cuts off the email: Use the full-page capture command instead of a viewport capture, or capture separate sections if the full-page image becomes too small to review comfortably.
- Mobile layout looks like desktop: Set a mobile-width viewport with device emulation before capture. A narrow-looking screenshot alone does not prove that a separate email client will render the same way.
- The headless capture is blank or incomplete: Confirm the URL or local file path opens in Chrome, then allow more time with
--timeout. That option is a maximum wait interval, not proof that every resource loaded; inspect the saved artifact. - The PDF has awkward page breaks: Open the PDF and inspect the pagination. Use an image instead if the client needs to judge the email as one continuous visual layout.
- The client asks whether all inboxes are covered: A browser proof cannot answer that. Run email-client previews and QA for the relevant client set and report those results separately.
Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a client approve an email from a browser screenshot?
Yes, if the requested approval is for the visual draft shown in that browser capture; it does not verify rendering in specific email clients.
Should I send a full-page image or a PDF?
Use whichever the client can inspect more clearly: a full-page image shows continuity, while a PDF can be easier to print or paginate. Check readability and page breaks before sending.
