With Playwright, the essential sequence is storageState, a fresh authenticated context, an application-specific readiness check, and page.screenshot(). A sign-in click alone does not prove that every authentication cookie has been set.
Complete the SSO flow before capturing
Use Playwright to authenticate through the site’s permitted flow. You can drive the sign-in UI, or use an authentication API if the application provides one and that method suits your test. UI login exercises the interactive path; API login can avoid repeating that interaction, but neither approach is universal across identity providers. See Playwright’s authentication guide.

After submitting credentials, wait for a signal that is meaningful for the application: either the known post-login URL or an authenticated-page element. SSO may involve several redirects, and cookies can be set during those redirects. Reaching the end of a click or form submission is not by itself proof that the browser has all required authentication state.

Replace the example URLs and selectors with those for your application. Store credentials outside source control, for example in environment variables. The final URL pattern and the heading selector are illustrative: determine the correct values from the application rather than assuming a particular SSO provider’s behavior.

await browser.close();The URL check confirms navigation; the heading check confirms an application-level condition. Depending on the site, one may be more reliable than the other, so use a signal that reflects the state you actually need to capture.
Reuse the authenticated state for the protected page
Initialize a new browser context from the saved state, navigate to the protected target, check that its content is ready, and then take the screenshot. Reusing state avoids repeating the login flow for every capture while still allowing you to validate that the target page loaded as expected.

Navigation completion and application readiness are different: when navigation includes multiple redirects, Playwright resolves it with the response from the final redirect, but that does not establish that the protected page’s own content is ready.

Playwright’s reusable storage state can include cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey (WebAuthn) authentication. Session storage is different: it is domain-specific, is not persisted across page loads, and is not included by the built-in storageState persistence. If your application depends on session storage, Playwright documents saving and restoring it with an initialization script; verify that this matches the application’s actual authentication design.

Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Keep the file in an appropriately restricted, ignored directory such as playwright/.auth; never commit it. Refresh or delete it when it expires or is no longer needed. See the authentication guide for the documented state workflow.
Handle common capture failures
- The capture shows the login page. The saved state may not contain the required session, the redirect may not have completed, or the session may have expired. Re-run the permitted login flow, wait for the final destination and authenticated UI, save fresh state, and retry.
- The URL changed but protected content is missing. Navigation is not the same as application readiness. Wait for a page-specific heading, control, or other authenticated signal before taking the screenshot.
- The app is signed in in a normal browser but not in the new context. Check which storage mechanism the application uses. In particular, session storage is not carried by Playwright’s built-in
storageState; determine whether the app requires separate restoration. - The state file stops working. Treat it as session material, not permanent credentials. Refresh it through the site’s permitted authentication process when expired, and avoid sharing it.
SSO redirects, MFA, session lifetime, and anti-automation checks vary by site and account. There is no universal selector or URL that proves login completion; use signals specific to the application you are authorized to test.

Can I capture a page that requires an interactive SSO session with a screenshot API?
Only if the service can receive and use the authentication state required by that application. Do not assume an API call can complete an interactive identity-provider flow on your behalf.
Does Playwright storageState save sessionStorage?
No. Playwright’s built-in reusable state does not persist sessionStorage; applications that depend on it may need separate save-and-restore handling.
