To capture a documentation page with its below-the-fold images, first scroll through the page so its lazy-loading behavior is triggered, wait for the images you need to appear, and then capture the full page. A full-page screenshot command by itself does not guarantee that every image has loaded: lazy-loaded media may still be absent even after the page’s ordinary load event fires.
If you need the original image files rather than a screenshot of the rendered page, collect the image resources separately. A screenshot contains pixels, not the source files.

Why lazy-loaded images go missing
Lazy loading defers noncritical resources until they are needed, often when a visitor scrolls near them. As a result, a page can appear loaded while images farther down the document have not been requested or rendered yet. The browser’s load event is not proof that all lazy images are present. MDN’s overview of lazy loading explains the behavior and its common triggers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe practical sequence is therefore: scroll through the content, allow images to load, verify the illustrations you expect, and only then capture the full page. This is a general workflow, not a guarantee for a site with custom scripts or interaction-dependent content.

Manual method: Chrome DevTools
- Open the documentation page in Chrome and wait for its initial content to settle.
- Scroll down in sections, pausing near images until they appear. A single jump to the bottom may not trigger every site-specific lazy loader.
- Check visually that the expected diagrams and illustrations are present. Do not rely only on the page’s load event.
- Open Chrome DevTools Device Mode. Select More options, then Capture a full size screenshot. This captures page content outside the visible viewport. Chrome also provides device emulation when you need to capture a mobile layout; choose settings appropriate to the page you are documenting. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.
Automate the capture with Playwright
Playwright can save a full-page screenshot with fullPage: true. Before taking it, scroll incrementally and wait for the images or content that matter. The script below uses Chromium, checks standard image elements after scrolling, and saves the full scrollable page.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = 'https://example.com/docs/';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Visit successive viewport-sized regions to trigger common scroll-based loaders.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(300, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
for (let y = 0; y < document.documentElement.scrollHeight; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 300));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
// Wait for standard HTML images to finish, or fail if the page keeps them pending.
await page.waitForFunction(() =>
[...document.images].every(img => img.complete),
{ timeout: 15000 }
);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'docs-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace the example URL with the authorized documentation page you need. Install Playwright in your project and its browser runtime as described in the Playwright screenshots guide. The image check covers standard <img> elements; it cannot establish that CSS background images, canvas content, or a custom loader requiring clicks has finished.

Adapt the wait to the page
- If a specific illustration is essential, wait for its selector or verify its image element rather than assuming all page content is ready.
- If images appear only after a control is clicked, perform that authorized interaction before capture.
- If the document grows while scrolling, revisit newly added sections and define a stopping condition that fits that site; infinite-scroll pages may not have a finite final height.
- Playwright discourages treating
networkidleas a universal readiness signal. A condition tied to the images or content of interest is more relevant.
Playwright’s Page API documents screenshot and page-inspection methods, including full-page capture. For very tall pages or complicated fixed and sticky elements, inspect the result; viewport-sized captures may be easier to review than one exceptionally long image.

fullPage produces an image of the rendered page. It does not download each source image as a separate file. For asset collection, inspect image elements, their attributes and responsive image candidates, as well as CSS background resources. Account for page JavaScript and authentication where applicable. There is no single extraction procedure established here for every site.
Choose the right capture approach
| Need | Starting point | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| One-off full-page image | Chrome DevTools full-size screenshot | Scroll through and confirm lazy content first. |
| Repeatable or batch captures | Playwright | Requires a script and a site-appropriate scroll and readiness strategy. |
| Separate original image files | Inspect and collect resource URLs | A screenshot is not an asset download; responsive sources and CSS backgrounds may matter. |
| Mobile-specific rendering | Chrome Device Mode or an emulated Playwright context | Set a viewport and device behavior that match the layout you need. |
Troubleshooting missing or incomplete images
Images are still blank
Scroll closer to each image and wait. Some implementations need more than ordinary scrolling, such as an interaction or a site-specific trigger. Confirm the page is accessible in the browser session you are using.
Rank #3
The script finishes after page load but misses images
This can be expected: lazy resources may remain unloaded when the ordinary load event fires. Trigger loading by scrolling, then verify the specific images before capture.
An infinite-scroll page keeps adding content
“All” content has no fixed meaning until the page stops appending entries. Continue loading sections only as needed and set a practical stopping condition for the capture; no universal stopping rule applies to every implementation.
Rank #4
The full-page image is unwieldy
Review the output and consider capturing viewport-sized sections or targeted elements. Playwright supports both full-page and element screenshots, which can be more manageable for exceptionally long pages.
The page requires sign-in or has access restrictions
Use an authorized session and follow the site’s access terms. The right capture settings cannot bypass permissions.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; for this workflow, use a full-page capture and enable lazy-image loading in the request options. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current parameters and response behavior.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://example.com/docs/
-o docs-page.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot include images outside the viewport?
Yes, Chrome DevTools’ full-size capture and Playwright’s full-page option capture beyond the current viewport, provided the content has been loaded and rendered.
Can I use the screenshot to recover the original image files?
No. A screenshot records rendered pixels; collect image resource URLs separately to obtain source files.
