Use an automation browser such as Playwright to visit the target through a configured proxy, then have the AI agent request the screenshot through a bounded browser tool. The proxy routes browser traffic; it does not make the agent a browser or guarantee access to a site. The example below illustrates the documented Playwright APIs, but has not been independently run: adapt it to your Playwright version, browser, operating system, and proxy provider before relying on it.
How the agent, browser, proxy, and screenshot fit together
- AI agent: interprets the request and decides when to navigate, wait, or ask for a visual check.
- Browser automation: performs the deterministic operations, such as opening a page and saving an image. Playwright notes that screenshots are for visual inspection, not interaction; use page snapshots or other interaction tools to identify actionable elements. See Playwright’s screenshot documentation.
- Proxy: routes browser requests according to its configuration. It does not establish that the destination allows access, or that a restricted page will load.
- Artifact handling: writes the resulting image to a file or returns it to the agent/application. Keep credentials out of prompts, logs, source control, and captured output.
In production, give the agent a specific target URL, an explicit list of permitted domains, a capture scope, and a defined failure response. For example: navigate only to the supplied URL, wait for the main content to appear, take a viewport screenshot, and report the URL and error if navigation fails.

How to take a screenshot with Playwright through a proxy
Install Playwright and the browser you intend to use according to the Playwright installation documentation. The following illustrative Node.js example configures a proxy at browser launch, visits one URL, waits for a meaningful page state, and saves a viewport image.

It also documents HTTP and SOCKS examples; use the scheme and authentication format your proxy operator specifies. See Playwright BrowserType. The snippet checks for a successful navigation response, but a site can still render an application-level error page despite an HTTP success, so verify the expected page state before treating the image as valid.

Keep proxy secrets outside the agent prompt
Put credentials in environment variables or an approved secret store rather than hard-coding them. Do not ask the agent to print them, include them in its browser instructions, or expose them in saved artifacts. Make proxy scope intentional: launch-level configuration affects that browser process; context or test-level configuration can limit the setting to a particular workflow. Check the API and test configuration relevant to the scope you choose.
Have the agent call bounded browser tools
Expose only the actions needed for the task—for example, navigate to the allowed URL, wait for a selector, and capture a screenshot. The application that runs the agent should validate the target domain and decide where the returned image is saved. Give the agent a clear instruction for timeouts, denied access, or unexpected redirects rather than encouraging repeated attempts or alternate routes.

Choose what part of the page to capture
Playwright supports viewport screenshots, screenshots of a selected element, and full-page screenshots. Choose the smallest scope that answers the request; these options produce different artifacts. The screenshot tool documentation describes the available capture scopes.

A full-page capture cannot be combined with a selected target. For dynamic pages, decide whether to capture before or after dismissing a consent banner, logging in, scrolling, or triggering content. Wait for a relevant selector or application state instead of relying only on an arbitrary delay; responsive layout, fonts, and asynchronously loaded content can change the image.
How to make an AI agent browse a website using a proxy
- Configure the browser: choose the browser engine and set its proxy endpoint and any required authentication or bypass rules.
- Set agent boundaries: specify the permitted target URL or domains, allowed browser actions, and what counts as the desired page state.
- Navigate: have the agent call the browser tool with the approved URL. The browser, not the model, makes the network request.
- Wait and inspect: wait for a meaningful page state and use a page snapshot or visual observation when the next action depends on the content.
- Capture and report: request the chosen screenshot scope, save or return the image, and report the URL and state captured. If navigation fails, report the error rather than claiming a successful capture.
For hosted computer use, OpenAI documents an application-started browser session in which an agent acts on observed browser state; an operation returns its last emitted screenshot when available. Session controls and proxy behavior are specific to the provider, so consult the current OpenAI computer-use documentation for that route.

Local Playwright or a hosted browser?
Local Playwright gives the application control over the browser process and local output files. A hosted browser is useful when execution needs to run remotely. Browser Use’s project documentation describes a hosted sandbox and proxy options, including a country-specific proxy option; confirm current details in its project documentation.
Before choosing a hosted route, compare the specific service’s execution location, who operates and configures the proxy, supported protocols and geographies, authentication and session handling, screenshot delivery and retention, costs and rate limits, and operational control. Do not assume different hosted services have equivalent session controls, data handling, or proxy coverage.

Reliability, access, and corporate proxy cautions
- Access policy: proxy routing is not permission to bypass a site’s access controls. Follow the site’s terms and your authorization; a proxy is not a universal access guarantee.
- Certificate interception: if a corporate proxy intercepts TLS, follow your organization’s certificate procedure. Playwright’s discussion of extra root certificates in its browser-install documentation concerns browser downloads behind an intercepting proxy; it should not be treated as a general page-navigation recipe.
- Flaky tests: for repeatable QA, Playwright Test can save screenshots after failures and can optionally record video and traces. These recording options are off by default; see Playwright Test configuration.
- Cost and performance: local automation uses your own execution environment, while hosted services may have provider-specific charges or limits. The available documentation cited here does not establish universal performance, success rates, or pricing for either approach; check the current provider terms and test against your authorized target.
Troubleshooting common failures
