To run prerecorded videos as an always-on YouTube Live stream, schedule the live event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder or cloud service to send and continuously play the videos. Scheduling an uploaded video to publish later is different: it makes a regular video public at a chosen time, not a live feed. YouTube Studio creates the event page; it does not supply or loop your playlist.
What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours.
- You must be at least 16 years old to live stream on YouTube.
- A playback and encoding setup that can continuously send your prerecorded content. For unattended use, confirm that it can play a playlist or loop, reconnect after interruptions, and support your intended duration.
- Videos you have the right to stream. Review YouTube’s copyright safety checklist before putting a long-running playlist on air.
Schedule the live event and connect your video source
- Choose the playback path. You can use encoder software, dedicated encoder hardware, or a cloud service. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams, but its listing does not document its setup, recovery, pricing, or precise playlist behavior. Confirm those details with any provider before relying on it.
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule a stream. The scheduled event creates a page you can share and may appear to subscribers as upcoming. It does not start an encoder or provide your playlist.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder or service. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported; it is RTMP encrypted over TLS/SSL.
- Set up continuous playback. Add the prerecorded files to the playlist or loop function in your chosen tool, then configure it to send the feed to the scheduled YouTube event. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a native Studio feature for looping a playlist of prerecorded files indefinitely.
- Preview and test. Start sending a test feed early enough to check the preview in Live Control Room, confirm audio and picture, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends setting up encoders ahead of time and leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom.
- Go live and monitor. Once the preview is correct, start the event using the encoder and YouTube’s live controls as required by your setup. For an unattended stream, check how the provider handles a dropped connection and how you will know if playback or ingest stops.
Choose an ingest protocol and encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Match the encoder’s output settings to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and to the upload capacity available at the sending location. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate; use YouTube’s current settings table rather than guessing.

HLS is another supported ingest path, but it has specific requirements: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte range. YouTube identifies OBS as an encoder that supports HLS output. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a local computer or encoder, capacity planning matters: the device must remain powered, the network connection must remain available, and the upload connection needs headroom beyond the selected stream bitrate. YouTube’s 20% headroom figure is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be stable.

Plan playback, recovery, and archives
- Playlist behavior: Verify that your tool advances through files and loops when it reaches the end. A single video ending is not the same as an always-on stream.
- Recovery: Check whether it reconnects after a network, encoder, or service interruption, and whether you need to restart the event manually.
- Monitoring and recordings: YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking local archives. If keeping a copy matters, establish a local recording or another retention plan rather than assuming the live replay is sufficient.
- Long-running replay: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer uninterrupted 24/7 stream will be saved as one replay; verify current handling and plan how you will record or segment it.
- Rights and channel policies: A live stream remains subject to YouTube’s copyright and channel rules. A scheduled event or continuous loop does not make reused material permissible; use content you own or are licensed to stream.
Compare ways to keep the stream running
| Option | Best fit | What to verify | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud playback of uploaded videos to YouTube, without leaving a home computer running. | Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. | One price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots. It streams to YouTube only. |
| Local encoder software | Creators who want to run the playback and sending process on a computer they control. | Confirm continuous playlist/loop support, reconnect behavior, protocol compatibility, monitoring, and local recording. | The computer, power, and internet connection have to stay available for the stream to continue. |
| Dedicated encoder hardware | Operators who need a separate physical encoding device; YouTube describes professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for higher-production events. | Confirm that the device supports your chosen protocol, settings, prerecorded playback workflow, and recovery requirements. | Requires equipment and a reliable on-site connection; the YouTube material does not identify a specific model for this use. |
| Other cloud or broadcast services | Workflows that need managed infrastructure or broadcast-oriented processing. | Verify playlist looping, unattended operation, recovery, ingest compatibility, duration, archive handling, price, and support with the provider. | YouTube lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streaming and AWS Elemental MediaLive for broadcast-grade processing; those directory descriptions are not a comparative endorsement or a guarantee of fit. |
Common problems and fixes
- The scheduled page exists, but nothing is playing. Scheduling creates an event, not a feed. Start the encoder or cloud service and confirm it is sending to the correct event.
- The stream key is rejected or the wrong feed appears. Recopy the stream URL and key from the intended YouTube event, check for accidental spaces, and keep the key private. If you suspect exposure, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The picture or audio is unstable. Check encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance, verify the selected bitrate against actual upload capacity, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Inspect stream health and test before relying on the event.
- The stream stops when a file ends. Configure playlist advancement or looping in the playback tool; YouTube Studio does not provide the prerecorded playlist itself.
- The feed does not return after a disconnect. Check the encoder or provider’s reconnect behavior and whether YouTube requires the event or encoder to be restarted. Test interruption recovery before leaving the stream unattended.
- You expected one replay from a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer operation, use a recording or segmentation plan and verify current archive handling.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Does scheduling a YouTube video make it a live stream?
No. Scheduling a video publication makes an uploaded video public at the chosen time; a live stream needs an encoder or cloud service sending a feed to a YouTube Live event.
