First choose the framing: capture only the element as a crop, or capture the page and mark the element so it stands out in context. For a one-off inspection, Chrome DevTools can show and select an element; for repeatable captures, Playwright can screenshot a locator or mark it in a wider image.
Choose a crop or a marked-up page screenshot
- Element crop: the image contains the selected element, without the surrounding page. Use this when the element itself is all you need.
- Page with the element highlighted: the image preserves the viewport or full page and adds a visible mark around the target. Choose this when the surrounding layout matters.
These are different outputs. A crop does not show where an element sits on the page, while a highlight or annotation keeps that context. Playwright supports element and page screenshots, as well as masking selected locators in a page screenshot. Playwright Screenshots · Playwright Page API

Inspect and capture one element manually
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Activate Inspect mode, then hover over the target. Chrome highlights the element under the pointer; click it to select the corresponding node in the Elements panel.
- Check that the selected node is the intended target. The inspection tooltip can show its selector, dimensions, colors, font, padding, and margin. Chrome DevTools Inspect mode
- To capture only the selected node, use the node screenshot command if your Chrome version offers it in DevTools. Its exact availability and UI are version-dependent; the official Chrome guidance linked above documents inspection and selection, not that capture command. If you need a documented, repeatable method, use Playwright.
Capture an element with Playwright
Playwright’s locator screenshot method captures the matched element and saves it to a file. Install Playwright in a Node.js project with npm install -D playwright, then install a browser with npx playwright install chromium. Save the following as capture-element.js and run it with node capture-element.js:

Make the locator reliable
Prefer a selector tied to a stable attribute or a unique accessible role and name over a long chain of layout-dependent CSS classes. If the selector matches multiple elements, narrow it until it identifies the intended one. Waiting for visibility helps with elements that render after navigation, but it cannot fix a selector that never matches.
Capture the whole page instead
When you want the complete scrollable page rather than a single-element crop, use the page screenshot option:

Keep the page context and highlight the target
For a page image with the target called out, take a page screenshot and mask the target locator. A mask places a colored box over the matched element; it is useful for drawing attention, but it obscures the element’s contents. Set the mask color explicitly so the result is predictable:

Check the result before sharing
- Confirm the screenshot has the intended framing: element-only, viewport, or full page.
- Check that the target is visible and not hidden behind a popup, sticky header, or other overlay.
- Remember that a screenshot of a scrollable container includes only the content currently in that container’s scroll position; it may not capture all of the container’s off-screen content.
- If a locator screenshot scrolls the target into view, inspect the resulting image to ensure scrolling or sticky elements have not changed what is visible.

Troubleshooting
The locator does not find the element
Check the selector against the live DOM in DevTools, and confirm it belongs to the page rather than an embedded frame. Make the selector more specific if it matches more than one node. If the target appears only after interaction, reproduce that interaction before waiting for and capturing it.

The screenshot is blank or the element is missing
Wait for the target to become visible before taking the screenshot. Check whether the page navigated successfully and whether a consent prompt, login wall, or other overlay changed the page state. A locator screenshot cannot capture an element that did not load or is not present in the selected page context.

The marked element is covered
Check for fixed-position banners, popups, or sticky headers. A mask intentionally covers its target; remove the mask if the target’s content needs to remain readable, or use an annotation overlay instead.
The image contains only part of a scrollable region
That can be expected: a scrollable container screenshot includes the content at its current scroll position rather than automatically combining every internal scroll position. Capture the relevant portion after scrolling the container, or use a page-level approach suited to the intended output.
