Use Selenium with Firefox’s documented full-page screenshot method, then use your operating system or hosting platform to run the script on a schedule. Selenium handles browser automation and capture; it does not provide the recurring scheduler. The examples below use Python and Selenium 4.50.0’s Firefox WebDriver API.
What you need to know before you start
- Capture scope depends on the browser API. The Selenium 4.50.0 Firefox API documents full-document screenshot methods. The reviewed Chromium API documents screenshots of the current window, not a full-document result. That distinction is about the documented methods; it does not prove that no Chromium-specific alternative exists. See Firefox WebDriver API and Chromium WebDriver API.
- The schedule is separate. A system scheduler or hosted job runner must launch your script at the desired cadence.
- Page readiness is site-specific. Navigation completing does not guarantee that lazy-loaded images, client-rendered content, or animations have finished. Wait for the content your capture actually needs.
Install Selenium and prepare Firefox
Install Selenium in the Python environment that will run the job:

python -m pip install selenium
Install Firefox on the machine or container that runs the scheduled task. Selenium requires a compatible browser and driver setup; follow Selenium’s current guidance for the environment where you deploy it. Confirm that the account running the scheduled job can launch the browser and write to the output directory.
Capture a full-page screenshot with Firefox and Python
This script opens a URL in Firefox, waits for a target element when one is specified, writes a full-document PNG to an absolute path, checks the documented Boolean result, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

finally:

Replace the example URL, output path, and readiness selector. Choose an element that appears only when the content you need is available. Presence alone may not mean that an image has loaded or an animation has stopped; add a site-specific condition if those details matter.
The Firefox API documents save_full_page_screenshot(filename) for a full-document PNG. It returns False on an I/O error, so check the result rather than assuming the file was written. The full-page method and its return behavior are documented in the Firefox WebDriver API.
Get PNG bytes or base64 instead of writing directly
If the next step in your program needs image data rather than a file, Firefox also documents get_full_page_screenshot_as_png() and get_full_page_screenshot_as_base64(). For example, to save the returned PNG bytes yourself:

Use an absolute, writable path for file output, especially in a scheduled job whose working directory may differ from your interactive shell.
Schedule the script to run repeatedly
Choose a scheduler available in the machine or hosting environment where Firefox can run. The appropriate scheduler, cadence, and configuration depend on your operating system and deployment; Selenium’s screenshot API does not prescribe them.
- Save the script in a stable location and test it manually using the same Python environment and operating-system account the scheduled job will use.
- Configure the host scheduler to invoke that Python interpreter and script at the interval you need. Use explicit paths for both the interpreter and script rather than relying on an interactive shell’s PATH or working directory.
- Write each run to a distinct filename if you need a history—for example, include a timestamp generated by the script. If you always use the same filename, each successful run overwrites the previous image.
- Choose where screenshots will be stored and how long to retain them. Add logging or scheduler notifications appropriate to your environment so failed runs do not go unnoticed.
- Verify a scheduled run by checking its logs, exit status, and expected output file. Test again after changing the browser, Selenium version, account permissions, or schedule configuration.
Firefox versus Chromium for this task
| Documented API reviewed | Documented capture scope | Documented output options | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox WebDriver, Selenium Python 4.50.0 | Full document through Firefox-specific full-page methods | PNG file, PNG bytes, or base64 | Use a compatible Firefox and Selenium setup; check the file-saving method’s Boolean result. |
| Chromium WebDriver, Selenium Python 4.50.0 | Current window for the reviewed screenshot methods | Screenshot file or file-saving operation, as documented by the API | If full-document capture is essential, verify the exact method with the selected browser, driver, and Selenium version. The reviewed API does not establish full-document behavior for its current-window methods. |
The generic WebDriver screenshot command is for the current browsing context, as described in the WebDriver windows documentation. Do not assume that a generic screenshot call captures the entire document just because it works for a visible window.

Make scheduled captures reliable
Wait for the right content
Use a condition tied to the page’s actual readiness needs: a meaningful element, a known state change, or another site-specific signal. A fixed delay can be useful when a page has a predictable pause, but it is not proof that all dynamic content is ready. For lazy-loaded pages, determine whether content must be scrolled into view before capture and verify the resulting image.
Keep each run observable
- Log the target URL, start time, output path, and whether capture succeeded.
- Return a nonzero process exit status on failures so the scheduler can detect them.
- Use distinct filenames when retaining a history, and define a retention policy so scheduled output does not grow without limit.
- Ensure the job account can access the browser, network, and output directory.
Account for runtime and storage
Every scheduled run launches a browser, navigates to the site, waits for required content, and writes an image. Runtime and file sizes vary with the page and environment; the available documentation does not establish a universal performance figure. Set a schedule that allows runs to finish, and monitor disk use if you retain every capture.

The screenshot only shows the visible window
Confirm that you are using Firefox’s documented save_full_page_screenshot() or corresponding full-page data method, rather than a generic current-window screenshot operation. For Chromium, verify the supported full-document approach for the exact browser, driver, and Selenium version in use; the reviewed Chromium API describes current-window capture.

The output file is missing or empty
Check that the parent directory exists, the scheduled-job account can write there, and the script uses the intended absolute path. Check the Boolean returned by save_full_page_screenshot(); a False result indicates an I/O error according to the Firefox API. Review the scheduler’s working directory and logs.
The screenshot is blank or missing content
Verify that the target URL loads in the same environment and account. Then adjust the readiness condition to wait for the content that matters. Navigation completion alone may precede client-rendered content, lazy-loaded images, or other page changes.
The script works manually but not on schedule
Compare the scheduled command with the manual invocation. Specify the Python interpreter and script by absolute path, confirm the scheduled account has browser and filesystem access, and inspect the job’s logs and exit status.

The job fails to close Firefox after an error
Keep browser cleanup in a finally block, as in the example. That calls driver.quit() on both successful and failed capture paths.
Or skip the browser setup
