For a modal built into a webpage, open it first, then use Chrome DevTools’ Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page, or Capture area screenshot to select a rectangle. A browser-managed JavaScript alert, confirm, or prompt is different: Chrome documents separate handling for those dialogs, but does not establish that they appear in ordinary page screenshots.
Capture an in-page modal in Chrome
- Open the page in Chrome and trigger the modal.
- Wait until the modal is visibly rendered in the state you want to capture.
- Open DevTools. If you need a particular screen size, open the Device Toolbar and set responsive dimensions or choose a device preset.
- In the Device Toolbar, open More options and select Capture screenshot to capture the current viewport. Choose Capture a full size screenshot to capture the page beyond the visible viewport. Chrome documents these capture options in its Device Mode guide.
- Open the resulting image and check that the modal is visible at the intended size and position.
Capture just the modal and a selected area
Use DevTools’ area capture when you want a rectangle containing the modal and its surrounding context rather than the entire viewport.

- Open the DevTools Command Menu.
- Type screenshot and choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag across the region to capture.
Area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked, according to Chrome’s Command Menu guide. Dock DevTools to the browser window and try again if the command is unavailable or fails.
Choose the right capture size
- Visible viewport: Choose Capture screenshot when the modal and the part of the page currently on screen are what matter.
- Whole page: Choose Capture a full size screenshot when you need page content outside the current viewport as well. Check the result: a modal’s position in a full-page image may not match the viewport composition you intended.
- Selected rectangle: Choose Capture area screenshot when the deliverable should focus on the modal and nearby content.
Set a responsive viewport if needed
Open the Device Toolbar to use responsive dimensions or select a listed device before capturing. Chrome’s Device Mode approximates mobile rendering; it does not run the page on a physical phone. Treat the result as an emulated viewport screenshot, not proof of how the page behaves on actual hardware. For an unlisted device, Chrome documents adding one under Settings > Devices and specifying its details in the Devices settings guide.

In-page overlays are not browser dialogs
A modal made from page content—such as a dialog overlay rendered by the site—is part of the webpage. Open it before taking the page screenshot.
A JavaScript alert(), confirm(), prompt(), or beforeunload dialog is browser-managed. The Chrome DevTools Protocol Page reference documents page screenshot capture separately from Page.handleJavaScriptDialog, which handles JavaScript-initiated dialogs. It does not promise that a native dialog will be composited into an ordinary page screenshot. Do not assume it will appear: inspect the output, and use an in-page overlay or another capture approach if the requirement is an image showing that dialog.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with a single API request. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. It does not claim to open an arbitrary modal for you, so make sure the target page is already in the desired state or use the appropriate page setup for your case.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The screenshot does not show the modal: Trigger it before capturing and wait until it is visibly rendered. Verify that the result is not just a stale or unintended page state.
- The modal is cut off: Use the viewport that matches the intended presentation, or choose area capture and select a suitable rectangle. For content beyond the visible viewport, use the full-size option and inspect the result.
- Capture area is unavailable or not working: Dock DevTools; Chrome documents that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- The emulated mobile view differs from a real phone: Device Mode is an approximation. Check on the physical device when actual-device behavior matters.
- A native alert or prompt is missing: The documentation does not establish that browser-managed JavaScript dialogs appear in page screenshots. Do not treat ordinary page capture as a guaranteed way to include them.
