To capture a website at an exact mobile-style height, open it in desktop Chrome, turn on DevTools’ device toolbar, select Responsive, enter the desired width and height, then choose More options > Capture screenshot. That saves the visible viewport only. If the page must run on a physical Android phone, use Chrome’s remote debugging instead; desktop Device Mode simulates mobile conditions but does not run the page on Android hardware.
Set an exact viewport height in desktop Chrome
This is the quickest way to control the dimensions of a mobile-style screenshot. Chrome’s Device Mode guide documents entering custom viewport dimensions and distinguishes a viewport capture from a full-page capture.

- Open the site on your computer. Navigate to the page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools and enable the device toolbar. Click Toggle device toolbar in DevTools.
- Select Responsive. Use the device dimensions menu and choose Responsive if it is not already selected.
- Enter both dimensions. Type the requested width and height in the viewport fields. These are pixel dimensions for the emulated viewport. Set width as well as height because a page’s responsive layout depends on both.
- Choose mobile behavior if needed. Set Device Type to Mobile when you want mobile-style behavior. Configure device pixel ratio (DPR) if the output needs a particular pixel density; CSS pixels and physical image pixels are not the same thing.
- Wait for the page to settle. Let content that depends on the viewport load before capturing.
- Capture the visible viewport. Select More options > Capture screenshot. This captures what is currently inside the configured viewport.
Do not choose Capture a full size screenshot unless you want the entire document, including content beyond the viewport. Changing the emulated height controls the page’s available viewport; it does not make the whole document that height. Chrome also documents rulers for setting width and height at marked pixel positions.

When you need the page running on a real Android phone
Use remote debugging if you need to inspect a tab that is actually open in Chrome on the phone—for example, to check behavior that desktop emulation cannot reproduce. Chrome’s remote debugging guide describes connecting a device and inspecting its live tab.

- On the phone, enable Developer options and turn on USB debugging.
- On the computer, open Chrome and go to
chrome://inspect/#devices. Ensure USB device discovery is enabled. - Connect the phone directly to the computer with a USB data cable. Approve the debugging prompt on the phone if it appears.
- Open Chrome on the phone and load the page you want to inspect.
- Find that tab in the computer’s
chrome://inspect/#devicespage and click Inspect beside its URL. - Use the remote DevTools window to inspect the live page. Chrome’s remote-debugging documentation also describes screencasting the phone’s page content to the computer.
This workflow connects you to the page running on the phone; it is not a documented way to force an arbitrary CSS-pixel viewport height on the physical handset. If you need a repeatable, exact test size, desktop emulation or an automated emulation workflow is the better-supported route.
If Chrome does not detect the phone
- Check that USB debugging is enabled and approve any on-phone authorization prompt.
- Use a cable that supports data, not charging only. Chrome’s troubleshooting guidance says the computer should be able to inspect files on the phone through the cable.
- Connect directly rather than through a USB hub.
- On Windows, install the device’s USB driver if one is needed.
Automate captures at a custom height
For repeated screenshots in a test or script, ChromeDriver mobile emulation accepts custom device metrics, including width, height, and pixel ratio, and can express touch and mobile behavior. You can use individual metrics instead of a named device preset. See Chrome’s ChromeDriver mobile emulation documentation.

At the DevTools Protocol level, the Emulation domain provides Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride to override screen dimensions and viewport-related dimensions, including device-width and device-height media-query results. Use that approach when your test harness already talks to the protocol; for one manual capture, the DevTools interface takes less setup.
Choose the right capture method
| What you need | Use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One screenshot at a chosen mobile width and height | Desktop Chrome DevTools Responsive mode | Fast and dimension-controlled, but mobile behavior is simulated. |
| The page running in Chrome on an actual Android phone | Chrome remote debugging | Inspects the live phone tab; requires USB debugging, connection setup, and a working data cable. |
| Repeatable captures in a script or test | ChromeDriver or DevTools Protocol emulation | Supports custom metrics but requires a developer workflow. |
| The full document, including content outside the visible viewport | DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command | Captures beyond the configured viewport rather than only its bounded area. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one API request, without setting up Chrome locally. For a viewport capture, pass the page URL and the required viewport dimensions using its API options; check the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for current parameter names and formats.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response indicates the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common problems and fixes
- The screenshot has the wrong height or shows the whole page: Confirm the Responsive height field and choose Capture screenshot, not Capture a full size screenshot.
- The page layout does not look like the target mobile layout: Check the width as well as height, and set Device Type to Mobile if appropriate. Device Mode is an approximation, not a physical Android browser.
- The image’s pixel dimensions differ from the CSS viewport dimensions: Check DPR. The viewport is specified in CSS pixels, while the output’s physical pixel dimensions can reflect device pixel ratio.
- Content is missing or still shifting: Wait for viewport-dependent or delayed content to finish loading before taking the capture.
- The phone is absent from
chrome://inspect/#devices: Check USB debugging, accept the phone’s prompt, use a data-capable cable and direct connection, and check for a Windows USB driver requirement.
