Playwright’s Firefox build matches recent Firefox Stable, but it is not the branded Firefox application: Playwright says its build uses patches and does not work with branded Firefox. Playwright’s browser documentation explains that distinction.
Install Playwright and its Firefox browser
For a Node.js project, install Playwright and download its Firefox build from your project directory:

Playwright launches the browser build it manages; installing Firefox separately does not make the branded Firefox application a supported Playwright browser. The managed build is the reliable choice for this procedure.

Capture the visible Firefox viewport

Choose what to capture

Full-page capture is convenient, but it can create a very tall image on long pages. Element capture is useful for components such as a navigation bar or chart; make sure the locator identifies the intended element before saving.

Set format, scale, and capture behavior
File type and output path
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. The file extension determines the format; PNG is the default. A relative path is resolved from the process’s current working directory. For example, { path: 'out/page.webp' } writes a WebP image in the out directory, which must already exist.
Pixel scale and JPEG quality
The default scale is 'device', which produces output at device-pixel resolution. Set scale: 'css' for one output pixel per CSS pixel, which can make high-DPI screenshots smaller. JPEG quality accepts values from 0 to 100; it does not affect PNG output.

});Crop, mask, and temporary styling
Use clip to capture a rectangle in page coordinates, or mask to cover matching locators. A screenshot-time style can apply CSS while the capture is taken. These options change what appears in the image, so use them when the crop or visual alteration is intentional.

animations: 'disabled' disables CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations during capture. It is useful when an animation makes repeated screenshots inconsistent. It does not make rendering identical across different machines or browser environments.

Wait for the page before capturing
A screenshot records the page state at capture time. Navigation completing does not guarantee that every image, font, or client-rendered element has finished loading. If a particular element matters, wait for it explicitly:

For pages with lazy-loaded images, a full-page screenshot can include content that only appears after scrolling; if necessary, use page-specific scrolling or waits before capture.

Keep visual comparisons reproducible
Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For visual baselines, generate and compare screenshots in the same environment rather than assuming pixel-perfect output across machines. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance discusses these sources of variation.
If the goal is a test assertion rather than simply saving an image, Playwright Test provides await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). Its screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing against the stored expectation. This is a Playwright Test feature, distinct from calling page.screenshot() to save a file. See the PageAssertions API.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
- Playwright cannot launch Firefox: install Playwright’s Firefox build with
npx playwright install firefox. Use the managed build rather than pointing Playwright at branded Firefox, which its browser documentation says is unsupported. - The screenshot is saved somewhere unexpected: relative paths are based on the current working directory. Use an absolute path or check the directory from which you ran
node. - The target folder does not exist: create it before calling
page.screenshot(), or save to a filename in an existing directory. - The image is blank or missing page content: wait for the relevant locator or application state before capture. A successful navigation alone may occur before client-rendered content is ready.
- The capture is only the visible portion: add
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page, or use a locator’sscreenshot()method for one element. - Repeated images differ: disable animations where appropriate and hold the browser and host environment constant. Playwright documents several environmental causes of rendering variation.
- Expected format is wrong: use a matching filename extension such as
.jpgor.webp; PNG is the default when no type is inferred.
