Start with scale: 'css', disabled animations, a hidden caret, a fixed viewport, and PNG output; mask or hide only content that is genuinely irrelevant. Keep baselines under version control and review changes before updating them.
Use toHaveScreenshot() for visual assertions
Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() captures a page and compares it with a stored expectation. It takes screenshots until two consecutive captures match, then saves the last as the baseline. Commit the generated snapshot directory and review changes as test output—not as automatic approvals. Make the rendering environment repeatable
Use the same host operating system, browser setup, settings, and headless mode to create and compare snapshots. Playwright notes that rendering can also vary with hardware and whether a machine is on battery or external power. Its guidance states: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” If you intentionally test multiple browsers or platforms, use separate projects and baseline names that distinguish them; see the browser projects guide and snapshot guidance.
Set the screenshot options deliberately
Scale: compare CSS pixels or device pixels
For layout regression checks, scale: 'css' gives one image pixel per CSS pixel, making dimensions easier to compare across device-pixel ratios. scale: 'device' gives one image pixel per device pixel and can produce larger files on high-DPI displays. Defaults differ: toHaveScreenshot() documents css, while standalone page.screenshot() documents device. If a test mixes the APIs, specify scale explicitly in both. Animations and caret
Screenshot assertions default to animations: 'disabled' and caret: 'hide'. Playwright fast-forwards finite animations, firing transitionend, and cancels infinite animations for the capture before resuming them. Standalone page screenshots default to allowing animations, so set these options explicitly when their output must match assertion snapshots. Disabling motion improves repeatability, but do not use it to avoid testing motion behavior itself.
Viewport, capture scope, and format
Use a fixed viewport in the project configuration so screenshots have consistent dimensions. The default page screenshot captures the visible viewport; fullPage: true captures the scrollable page. Use a page assertion for whole-page risks or an element assertion when the component is the intended test boundary. Playwright visual snapshots default to PNG; lossless WebP is also supported. Prefer lossless output for pixel comparisons rather than lossy compression. Consult the Page and PageAssertions references for the installed version’s available options.

Stabilize dynamic content without hiding regressions
When timestamps, rotating content, or other volatile regions make an otherwise meaningful assertion unstable, suppress only those regions. A screenshot style can hide or alter elements; Playwright says this stylesheet pierces Shadow DOM and applies to inner frames. Locator masks cover an element’s bounding box with a colored rectangle and also apply to invisible elements. Broad masks and styles can conceal real UI changes, so keep selectors narrow and intentional. See the visual comparisons guide and the PageAssertions API.
Choose comparison tolerance carefully
The documented pixelmatch threshold default is 0.2. It represents acceptable perceived color difference in YIQ space, on a scale from strict 0 to lax 1. maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio limit the allowed count or proportion of differing pixels and are unset by default. These controls solve different problems: threshold adjusts the color difference accepted per pixel, while the max-diff options bound how many pixels may differ. Start with a strict practical setting for your stable environment, then loosen it only for known rendering noise. A high allowance can let genuine defects pass. A practical Playwright Test example
This TypeScript test shows the core choices for a page-level baseline. It assumes Playwright Test is installed and a project with a fixed viewport is configured. Adjust the URL and test content to your application; keep masking limited to known volatile UI.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
- Snapshots differ on another machine: align operating system, browser setup, viewport, and headless mode with the baseline environment; use distinct projects and baselines when platforms must differ.
- Standalone screenshots do not match assertion snapshots: set
scaleexplicitly because the documented defaults differ; also align animation handling. - Differences appear around motion or focus: use the assertion’s disabled-animation and hidden-caret behavior deliberately, or set equivalent options for standalone captures.
- Only changing content causes noise: narrow the screenshot stylesheet or locator mask to the volatile element and verify that important UI remains visible.
- Many small differences are accepted or a meaningful change is missed: distinguish per-pixel color tolerance from total changed-pixel limits, and reduce overly permissive values.
- A baseline changed unexpectedly: inspect the image diff and the environment before running
npx playwright test --update-snapshots; update only when the visual change is intended.
