How to Capture a Website Screenshot in Chrome with Hardware Acceleration On

Chrome DevTools can capture the visible webpage or its full length without requiring you to disable hardware acceleration. Here are the steps, a Headless option, and troubleshooting tips.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can capture a website in Chrome without turning off hardware acceleration: use Chrome DevTools’ Device Mode. Choose More options > Capture screenshot for the visible page area, or Capture a full size screenshot to include content below the fold. Chrome’s documentation does not list disabling acceleration as a prerequisite for either command.

Capture a webpage with Chrome DevTools

  1. Open the webpage you want to save in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools. One route is Chrome’s browser menu: More tools > Developer tools. Menu placement can vary by Chrome version.
  3. In DevTools, turn on Device Mode if it is not already active.
  4. Open Device Mode’s More options menu, then select Capture screenshot for the current viewport. Choose Capture a full size screenshot to capture the full page, including content beyond the visible area.

These are webpage captures, not screenshots of the entire desktop. Google documents both capture choices in its Chrome DevTools Device Mode guide. It does not promise that they will work for every page or computer configuration.

Use Chrome Headless for repeatable captures

For command-line use or repeatable captures, Chrome Headless can save a webpage screenshot to a file. The documented example sets a 412-by-892 window size:

chrome --headless=new --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://developer.chrome.com/

Replace the URL and dimensions with your target page and desired capture size. Chrome saves the file as screenshot.png in the current working directory. See the Chrome Headless documentation for the command-line workflow.

What hardware acceleration has to do with it

Hardware acceleration uses the GPU for graphics-intensive tasks while the CPU handles other processes. Chrome’s enterprise documentation describes this behavior, but does not say that GPU acceleration inherently prevents webpage screenshot capture. The DevTools workflow above is documented without a requirement to switch acceleration off. See Chrome Enterprise’s policy documentation.

If the screenshot is blank or capture is blocked

First identify which workflow is failing. A DevTools webpage capture, an operating-system screenshot of the desktop, a page-rendering problem, and a restriction imposed on a managed browser are different issues.

  • Page rendering problem: A recent answer in the Google Chrome Help Community recommends a temporary diagnostic test: open Settings > System, switch Use graphics acceleration when available off, and click Relaunch. This is community troubleshooting advice, not a documented requirement or guarantee for DevTools capture. If it helps isolate the issue, you can switch acceleration back on and relaunch after testing.
  • Managed Chrome restriction: The DisableScreenshots policy reference says the policy can block screenshots taken with keyboard shortcuts or extension APIs. It does not establish that the policy blocks DevTools’ menu action. Ask your administrator whether a policy applies before changing managed-browser settings. The policy page lists support on ChromeOS since version 22, Linux, Mac, and Windows since version 22, and Android since version 143; check the current page because supported versions can change.
  • ChromeOS device screenshot: ChromeOS has its own screen-capture shortcuts: Ctrl + Overview captures a screenshot, and Ctrl + Shift + Overview captures a selected area. Those capture the screen rather than the webpage itself; see Chromium’s screenshots and video captures guide.
