If notes need to remain visible while the podcast plays, use an overlay. Chat and a companion page can help viewers reach the complete notes, but neither puts the notes into the video itself.

Build a readable show-notes overlay
Keep the on-screen version short
Show only the information viewers need at a glance: the episode title, the current segment or guest, and a short URL for the full notes. Treat the overlay as a summary, not a transcript. Long notes are easier to read on a separate page.

Add it to the encoder scene
- Create a graphic or browser-based visual for the notes.
- In the encoder scene that sends video to YouTube, add the graphic or a Browser Source. YouTube’s break-slate instructions say to set the Browser Source width and height to match the stream resolution. Using that documented approach for show notes is an adaptation; encoder support and controls vary. YouTube Help: Create a break slate
- Check that the text is legible against the video and does not obscure essential content. Test the actual encoder output rather than assuming a source will display correctly.
Preview and verify the stream
Before relying on the layout, check it in the Live Control Room preview and then on the public channel or watch page, including on a mobile device. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting, verifying access through channel and watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up encoder streams at least two hours ahead and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Make the full notes reachable without chat
You can post a concise message with the full-notes link in live chat and pin it. Only the creator can pin a message, and only one message can be pinned at a time. A pinned message is a chat aid, not an overlay. YouTube Help: Pin messages in live chat

Do not make a chat link the only route to the notes if viewers may watch the vertical live feed: YouTube lists clickable links in chat and channel description for horizontal streams, while those links are unavailable in the vertical live feed. Put a readable short URL or other directions in the video itself, and test the viewer experience in the format you plan to use. YouTube Help: Compare live streaming features

A 24/7 stream needs an operational plan for keeping the overlay accurate and visible, not just an initial scene setup. Decide who updates the notes, how changes are checked before they appear, what viewers should see if the notes source fails, and who monitors a restart or encoder handoff. These are practical continuity measures; YouTube’s cited event guidance does not prescribe a 24/7 show-notes procedure.

Check these before leaving the stream running
- Confirm the overlay source is present in the scene being sent to YouTube.
- Check the notes and URL in the Live Control Room preview and on the viewer-facing page.
- Test on mobile and in the intended horizontal or vertical format.
- Decide how a failed or outdated notes source will be noticed and corrected.
- Monitor stream audio and video quality, especially after a restart or encoder handoff.
Troubleshoot common show-notes problems
The overlay is missing from the stream
Check that the graphic or browser source is included in the active encoder scene and that the scene is the one being sent to YouTube. Recheck the result in the Live Control Room preview before relying on the public stream.
The browser-based notes do not fit
Check the Browser Source dimensions against the stream resolution, as YouTube’s break-slate instructions recommend. Then preview the output and adjust the layout in the encoder or source. The exact controls depend on the encoder you use.

The chat link is not clickable for some viewers
Check whether they are watching a vertical live feed. YouTube lists clickable chat links for horizontal streams but not vertical live feeds, so include a readable short URL in the video rather than relying on chat alone. YouTube Help: Compare live streaming features
