To capture a website screenshot every hour, either create a recurring job in a screenshot service that supports schedules, or have an external scheduler call a screenshot API at the top of each hour. In both cases, set the page and capture options, decide where files will be stored, and plan for failures, duplicate runs, and monthly usage.
Choose who will run the hourly schedule
There are two practical setups. A managed schedule keeps the timer and capture in one service. An external scheduler gives you control over timing and integration, while the screenshot API handles rendering.

Use a managed recurring screenshot job
ScreenshotAPI.net documents recurring screenshots configured with a cron schedule. Its workflow is to configure the page and capture settings, choose Schedule Screenshot, set the cron expression, and manage the job through Schedule Requests. Its example for the start of every hour is 0 * * * *. Confirm the service’s timezone behavior before assuming this means a particular local time; the expression alone does not set a timezone.

If the screenshot API only captures on request, schedule the request with a timer you already operate, such as cron, a CI scheduler, a serverless timer, or an automation flow such as n8n. The timer decides when to run and how to retry; the API renders the page. This also makes it easier to connect captures to your existing storage, monitoring, or deployment workflow.

Cloudflare Browser Run is one example of an endpoint that can render a URL or supplied HTML and return a screenshot. Its documentation describes previews and automated testing, QA, or visual regression as use cases, but does not establish hourly scheduling on that page. Pair an endpoint of this kind with an external scheduler if you need a recurring capture.
Configure the capture and archive
- Choose an endpoint and output format. Check that the service can render the pages you need and return the required image format. Capture options and exact request fields vary by API.
- Set the page and stable capture settings. Specify the target URL and decide on viewport size, full-page behavior, and any other options needed for a consistent record. If you compare images over time, keep these settings constant.
- Set recurrence. For ScreenshotAPI.net’s documented cron example, use
0 * * * *for minute zero of every hour. If you use another scheduler, configure its timezone and retry behavior explicitly. - Choose storage and retention. Save results to the provider’s storage or a destination you control, and decide how long to retain the files. ScreenshotAPI.net describes delivery of scheduled captures to a customer-owned S3, Google Cloud, or Wasabi bucket. Verify the chosen service’s current retention, deletion, export, and access rules before relying on it as an archive.
- Decide how errors and retries work. Choose whether a failed page load should be retried, how delayed runs are handled, and how to avoid saving duplicate results when a scheduler retries a request. Add alerts if missing captures need attention.
- Estimate usage before enabling the schedule. Count pages, viewport variants, and hourly runs, then check the provider’s current quota and billing rules.
Estimate hourly capture volume
Use this calculation as a planning baseline:
monthly captures = pages × viewport variants × scheduled runs per month
For example, ScreenshotAPI.net’s documentation gives a provider-specific example of ten pages captured at two widths every hour: 14,400 renders per month. That illustrates how its example counts renders; it is not a universal billing rule. Check how your chosen service counts requests, renders, retries, and failed captures before selecting a plan.

For an external scheduler, include the number of scheduled runs and the expected effects of retries or overlapping executions in your estimate. If a run can take longer than an hour, decide whether the next run should wait, skip, or overlap; uncontrolled overlap can create duplicates and unexpected usage.

No screenshot appears at the expected local time
Check the scheduler or provider timezone first. The cron expression 0 * * * * means minute zero of each hour in the scheduler’s configured timezone; it does not by itself guarantee a local timezone. Review job history and the provider’s documented schedule semantics.

Some pages are blank or incomplete
Confirm the URL is reachable by the capture service and that the chosen rendering and wait settings suit the page. Dynamic content may need a wait condition or delay if the API supports one. A capture endpoint’s exact rendering options vary, so consult its current documentation rather than assuming all services behave alike.

Inspect scheduler retries and overlapping runs. A retry after a slow response can produce another capture even when the first eventually completes. Use a stable run identifier or timestamp in your storage workflow where possible, and define whether duplicate results should be ignored or retained.
Usage is higher than expected
Recalculate pages multiplied by viewport variants and scheduled runs, then account for the provider’s rules for retries and renders. Check whether the service bills per request, successful render, or another unit; those rules are not interchangeable.

Historical screenshots are unavailable
Check the configured destination and the service’s retention, deletion, export, and access settings. If the history matters, store copies in a destination you control and set an explicit retention policy.
FAQ
Does an hourly screenshot mean exactly 60 minutes between captures?
Not necessarily. A cron schedule such as 0 * * * * targets the start of each hour in its configured timezone. Actual completion time can vary with queueing and page rendering.

Can I capture more than one viewport each hour?
Yes, if your capture workflow supports multiple viewport settings. Count each page-and-viewport combination when estimating usage, and verify how your provider counts them.
Do screenshot APIs all store a permanent history?
No general retention guarantee applies across providers. Check the selected service’s storage and retention terms, or save the returned captures to an archive you control.
