For an exact browser viewport on a Mac, use Chrome DevTools: switch on the device toolbar, enter the required width and height in Responsive mode, then select Capture screenshot. Choose Capture a full size screenshot instead if you need the whole page, including content outside the visible area.

A viewport capture records what is visible in the browser at the selected width and height. Use it when you need to inspect or share a page as it appears within a particular browser window size.

A full-size capture includes page content beyond the visible viewport. In Chrome, choose Capture a full size screenshot from the device toolbar’s More options menu. This changes the capture target; it does not mean that the viewport dimensions represent a physical device’s screen.

CSS pixels and device pixel ratio
Chrome’s device toolbar includes device pixel ratio (DPR) controls. DPR describes the relationship between logical CSS pixels and physical display pixels, so the image’s pixel dimensions may differ from the CSS viewport width and height. If a handoff or downstream tool specifies image pixel dimensions, confirm whether it means CSS pixels or output pixels and account for DPR. Chrome explains DPR and its role in HiDPI displays in its device mode documentation.

macOS Screenshot
Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls, or Shift-Command-4 to select a screen area. macOS can capture the entire screen, a window, or a manually selected portion. This captures or crops what is currently displayed; it does not set the browser to an exact custom viewport size. The Screenshot controls also let you choose a save location, set a timer, and show or hide the pointer. See Apple’s screenshot instructions.

Chrome describes device mode as a first-order approximation: it does not run the page’s code on an actual mobile device, and some device behavior cannot be simulated. A custom viewport is useful for checking responsive layouts, but it does not guarantee that the result will match a particular physical phone. Test on actual hardware when device-specific behavior or exact device fidelity matters. Chrome’s documentation explains this limitation.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one API request. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo.
For API options and parameters, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL request captures the target URL; set the viewport options you need in accordance with the API docs:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webpSign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.
