To capture a webpage at mobile viewport width with URLbox, set the render’s width and height explicitly. For example, URLbox’s quick start uses 390 × 844 pixels; these are example viewport dimensions, not a universal phone size. A narrow viewport controls the page’s layout space, while a mobile user-agent is a separate setting that changes the browser identity the page receives.
Set the URLbox viewport dimensions
URLbox’s documented default viewport is 1280 × 1024 pixels, so omitting the dimensions will not produce a mobile-width layout. Set width to the desired viewport width in pixels and height to the desired viewport height.

Choose whether the page should receive a mobile user-agent
Viewport size and user-agent answer different questions. The viewport dimensions determine the available layout space; URLbox’s mobile user-agent option supplies a modern iPhone/Safari user-agent string. Use the option when you want the site to respond to a mobile browser identity as well as a narrow viewport. It is not a substitute for setting width and height.

Use authentication safely for production captures
For secure render links, URLbox’s quick start describes a token generated as HMAC-SHA256 of the query options, signed with the secret key. The API reference also documents bearer-secret authentication for API requests. Keep the secret key out of public client-side code; generate signed requests in a trusted server-side environment. Check the Quick Start and API Reference for the method that matches your integration.
Use the synchronous render API when you need a render response
URLbox documents a POST request to /v1/render/sync with a URL or HTML, output format, and desired dimensions. Once the render is generated, the response includes a renderUrl and its size. The temporary render URL expires after 30 days, so store or retrieve the output in a way that fits your retention needs. Refer to the API Reference for request details.

Understand related image options
thumb_width: Resizes the generated image; it does not make the browser viewport narrower. Setwidthfor mobile layout dimensions.retina=true: Requests a high-definition capture equivalent to device pixel ratio 2.0 (@2x). URLbox notes that output dimensions double and processing may take longer. Retina affects pixel density, not the page’s CSS viewport.- Mobile user-agent: Changes the supplied browser identity string, not viewport dimensions.
These options can be combined when appropriate: viewport dimensions control layout, user-agent controls browser identity, and retina controls output pixel density. URLbox documents these behaviors in its Render Options.
Check and troubleshoot the result
- The page still looks like desktop: Confirm that
widthis set to the intended narrow viewport. URLbox defaults to 1280 × 1024, so omitted dimensions leave a wide layout. - The page behaves differently from a phone browser: A narrow viewport alone does not set a mobile user-agent. Decide whether to enable URLbox’s
mobileoption as well. - The image has the wrong pixel dimensions: Review both viewport dimensions and whether
retina=trueis enabled. Retina doubles the output dimensions; it does not change the viewport. - The temporary render link no longer works: URLbox documents a 30-day expiry for the temporary
renderUrl. Generate another render or retain the output through an appropriate storage workflow. - A signed link or API request is rejected: Verify that the authentication method matches the request type, that the query options used for signing are correct, and that the secret has not been exposed or misplaced. URLbox documents secure render-link tokens and bearer-secret API authentication separately.
