How to Capture a Webpage Screenshot with an AI Agent After Accepting a Cookie Consent Dialog

A practical Playwright workflow for AI agents to accept a site’s actual cookie-consent control, verify the page state, and take a viewport or full-page screenshot.

Use the browser automation agent to identify and accept the page’s actual consent control, verify the banner has disappeared, wait for the content you need, and then capture the page. There is no reliable universal “accept cookies” selector: consent interfaces differ by site. The example below uses Playwright and shows where an AI agent should inspect and adapt the locator.

First identify what kind of dialog you are handling

A cookie banner rendered inside a webpage is usually page UI, not a browser JavaScript dialog. A handler for JavaScript alert(), confirm(), prompt(), or beforeunload will not automatically accept an in-page consent banner. Playwright documents JavaScript dialogs separately from page controls: Playwright dialog handling.

There is no generic cross-site solution because sites implement consent interfaces differently, as a Playwright maintainer explained in a Playwright issue about cookie popups. Inspect the target page and use its actual accept control. It may be identified by accessible role and name, visible text, or a site-specific DOM selector. If inspection shows the interface is inside a frame, use a frame-aware locator; do not assume every banner uses an iframe.

Playwright workflow for an AI agent

  1. Navigate to the target. Keep the browser context, viewport, locale, and any relevant session state consistent when repeatability matters.
  2. Inspect the visible consent UI. Have the agent use the page’s accessible structure or DOM to identify the control that explicitly means accept. Do not substitute a close, reject, or preferences action when the user asked to accept.
  3. Click the site-specific control. Use a locator grounded in the observed page rather than guessing a selector that may belong to a different consent platform.
  4. Verify the result. Check that the consent interface is no longer visible and that the intended page content is present. A completed click call alone does not prove that consent was accepted.
  5. Wait for the content that matters. Prefer an assertion for a relevant heading, element, or state over an arbitrary delay or a generic network-quiet condition.
  6. Capture the viewport or full page. Choose the scope that matches the task, then save the screenshot.

Runnable example: site-specific Playwright locator

This Node.js example illustrates the sequence. Replace the example button name with the consent control actually observed on the target site. The locator is intentionally not presented as universal.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 } });

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });

    // Replace this accessible name with the observed accept control.
    const acceptButton = page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept all cookies', exact: true });
    await acceptButton.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 10000 });
    await acceptButton.click();

    // Verify that the banner is gone; adapt this locator to the target page.
    await acceptButton.waitFor({ state: 'hidden', timeout: 10000 });

    // Wait for a meaningful page state, not merely a quiet network.
    await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Example Domain' }).waitFor({ state: 'visible' });

    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

The navigation, accessible names, verification locator, and readiness assertion must match the target site. If the accept button disappears but the page still shows a consent overlay, inspect the updated DOM and verify the actual banner state rather than proceeding as if the capture succeeded.

If the prompt really is a JavaScript dialog

Handle it through Playwright’s dialog event, not a page-button locator. When an event listener is installed, it must accept or dismiss the dialog; otherwise page actions can stall. Without a listener, Playwright automatically dismisses dialogs. For an explicit accept action, install a handler before the action that triggers the dialog:

page.on('dialog', async dialog => {
  await dialog.accept();
});

That handler is for browser-level JavaScript dialogs only; it is not a replacement for locating an in-page cookie banner.

Choose screenshot scope and readiness deliberately

Viewport screenshot

Use the default page screenshot when the task is to capture exactly what is visible in the current viewport. Set the viewport before navigation if the layout must be reproducible across runs.

Full-page screenshot

Set fullPage: true when the capture should include the full scrollable page. Lazy-loaded images or content may need to be brought into view or otherwise made ready before capture; verify that the required content is present rather than assuming a full-page flag loads every asset.

One-element screenshot

For a single component, use a locator screenshot. Playwright’s locator screenshot waits for actionability and scrolls the element into view; its options also allow animation disabling for a steadier element capture. See the Locator API.

Readiness checks

Playwright’s Page API supports navigation and screenshot options, and its waitForLoadState() resolves when the requested load state is reached (load is the default). Playwright generally auto-waits before actions, but it marks networkidle as discouraged for tests. A page can keep network requests open or look visually incomplete after the network quiets; wait for the specific text, element, or state that the capture requires.

Troubleshooting consent and capture failures

  • The locator times out: Inspect the rendered page and accessible names; the button may have different text, appear later, or be inside a frame. Update the locator to match what is actually present.
  • The click succeeds but the banner remains: Confirm that the located control was the accept action and inspect whether a second step or confirmation is required. Do not infer acceptance from the automation call returning.
  • A JavaScript dialog blocks the page: Register a dialog listener before the triggering action and explicitly accept or dismiss it according to the task.
  • The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Assert that the intended content is visible before capture. Check whether the page is still loading, the locator targets the correct content, or lazy-loaded material has not been brought into view.
  • Network-idle waiting hangs or gives the wrong signal: Replace it with a page-state assertion tied to the content that matters.
  • The agent cannot identify the consent control: Stop and report that it could not capture the page after acceptance. Do not hide the banner, fabricate consent, or claim acceptance occurred.
