With Playwright or Puppeteer, request transparency by setting omitBackground: true in the screenshot options and save the capture as PNG. This hides the browser renderer’s default white background; it does not remove background colors or images that the webpage itself paints.
Capture a transparent webpage screenshot with Playwright
Playwright documents omitBackground as the option that hides the default white background and allows screenshots with transparency. Use PNG: Playwright explicitly notes that omitBackground does not apply to JPEG. See the Playwright Page API.

await browser.close();Replace the URL with the page you want to capture. This example waits for the page load event, but that is not a universal readiness condition: if the content you need appears later, wait for a relevant selector or another site-specific condition before taking the screenshot.
Capture the full page or a specific area
Transparency and capture scope are separate settings. For a full-page image, add fullPage: true. For a defined viewport region, use clip with coordinates and dimensions. Playwright documents these and other screenshot controls, including scale and screenshot styling, in its Page API.

});Do not combine options blindly: choose full-page capture or a clip according to the output you need. Check the resulting image in its destination application, or inspect its alpha channel if transparency is a hard requirement.
Use Puppeteer for the same result

})();As with Playwright, choose a readiness condition that matches the page. A load event alone may not mean that delayed or client-rendered content is ready to capture.
What transparency changes—and what it does not
omitBackground removes the browser’s default white canvas behind the page. It does not erase a webpage’s own CSS background, background image, or other painted content. If those authored backgrounds must disappear, change or override the relevant page styles deliberately; that is separate from enabling renderer transparency. The option’s documented behavior is described by both the Playwright API and Puppeteer’s options reference.

Choose an image format that preserves transparency
PNG is the safest documented starting point for a transparent screenshot. Playwright lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot types, but specifically says omitBackground is not applicable to JPEG. Puppeteer documents PNG as the default screenshot type. If your downstream application or pipeline requires transparency, verify the actual file there rather than assuming every format or consumer handles alpha the same way.

- The image still looks white. The page may paint its own white background, which
omitBackgrounddoes not remove. Inspect the page’s CSS and distinguish that painted content from the renderer’s default canvas. - The output has no transparent pixels. Confirm you set
omitBackground: true, saved a PNG, and are viewing it in an application that displays transparency rather than compositing it onto white. Inspect the alpha channel if needed. - The capture is missing content. The page may not have finished rendering the elements you need. Wait for a relevant selector or site-specific readiness condition before calling
screenshot(). - A hosted API ignores the option name.
omitBackgroundis a Playwright/Puppeteer setting, not a universal screenshot API parameter. Use the provider’s documented request parameters and supported output formats. - JPEG does not retain the expected transparency. Playwright explicitly excludes JPEG from
omitBackground. Use PNG for the documented transparent path.
