Build the endpoint from four parts: an HTTP entry point, a serverless function running Chromium through Playwright, capture logic, and a way to deliver the image. On AWS, a Lambda Function URL is the straightforward HTTP entry point; API Gateway is a better fit when you need API features such as richer authentication, throttling, or custom-domain handling. Neither choice by itself establishes that browser execution or stored screenshots meet your India-specific location and data-handling requirements.
Choose the endpoint architecture
A request should specify the URL to capture and, at minimum, the viewport and whether to capture the visible viewport or the full page. The function validates the request, opens the page in a browser, waits according to a deliberate readiness policy, takes the screenshot, and returns the bytes or stores them and returns a reference.

AWS describes Function URLs as a simple, direct HTTP endpoint and API Gateway as a more advanced service for fully featured APIs. Its invocation documentation gives defaults of 1,000 concurrent Lambda executions per Region and API Gateway rates up to 10,000 requests per second per Region with a 5,000-request burst capacity. These are documented defaults, not performance guarantees or necessarily your account’s available quota; confirm current quotas for the account and region before launch. Build the capture function
Define a narrow request contract
For example, accept JSON with url, width, height, fullPage, and an image format. Set conservative bounds for dimensions and response size. Reject malformed URLs and schemes other than HTTP or HTTPS. Because callers control the destination, defend against server-side request forgery (SSRF): block loopback, private, link-local, and cloud metadata destinations; resolve and check DNS results; and recheck redirects so a public URL cannot redirect the browser to a protected address. Enforce a navigation deadline and an output-size limit.

Package Playwright and Chromium
Use a Playwright-compatible Chromium binary and package it with the function or provide it through a compatible deployment layer or image. Browser binaries are large and runtime compatibility changes: verify the current Lambda runtime, CPU architecture, binary build, deployment packaging limits, and region support before choosing a package. A community package page documents Chromium support for certain AWS Lambda Node.js runtimes, but it is not an AWS compatibility guarantee. Community Chromium package documentation
Keep the browser and page lifecycle bounded. Reuse a browser process within a warm invocation only if your chosen runtime and package support that safely; close pages and contexts after each request, and handle a cold start or browser-launch failure as an ordinary service error. Do not assume that increasing memory alone fixes an incompatible binary or an exhausted invocation deadline.
Illustrative handler shape
The following Node.js-style handler shows the capture flow, not a deploy-ready package: the exact Chromium import, launch arguments, and Lambda adapter depend on the browser package and current runtime. Wire its response shape to the selected Function URL or API Gateway integration, and implement the URL protections described above before navigating.

For large captures, it is usually more practical to write the image to object storage and return a short-lived reference than to send a large inline response. Choose readiness and capture scope deliberately
Viewport or full page
A viewport screenshot captures the visible browser area. A full-page screenshot expands the capture to the page’s full height; it can create much larger dimensions and take longer to render, process, and transfer. Make this an explicit API option rather than silently changing behavior. Playwright supports both modes and controls such as masking selected elements. Playwright screenshot documentation
When to take the screenshot
There is no single readiness signal that suits every site. domcontentloaded is a useful bounded starting point, but it does not guarantee that client-rendered content, fonts, or images are ready. For known sites, wait for a meaningful selector; for variable pages, allow a bounded delay or another policy suited to the page. Avoid waiting indefinitely for network idle: analytics, ads, or long-lived connections can keep a page active. Test the policy against representative pages and set navigation and whole-invocation deadlines.

Capture controls
Playwright’s screenshot options include full-page capture, output format, and masking elements that should not appear. Choose output dimensions and format based on the consumer: PNG preserves sharp text and transparency where supported by the flow, while JPEG may reduce payload for photographic pages. A synchronous endpoint is suitable only when browser startup, page loading, screenshot generation, and response transfer all fit the function and gateway deadlines, with enough room for slow pages. Inline image bytes are simple for small outputs but enlarge the response. If workloads can be slow or results large, accept a job, return an identifier, capture asynchronously, save the object, and expose status and retrieval separately. Set expiration and access controls for stored images.
Before launch, verify the current Lambda timeout and packaging limits, API Gateway integration behavior, payload limits, and quotas for the selected region. These service details and limits can change; do not design around an unverified assumption that every full-page capture will fit a synchronous response.

Plan for India-specific requirements
“An Indian serverless app” can mean the caller, function, target website, or stored image is in India. Those are different location questions. Choose and verify the execution region for the function and storage, then check the platform’s current regional availability, outbound network behavior, and applicable data-handling terms. If the target site varies content by visitor location, confirm where the browser’s outbound request appears to originate; do not infer that from the API’s brand or the caller’s location.
The available provider evidence does not establish which hosted screenshot APIs run their browsers in India or guarantee data residency, retention, or partner terms. An AWS Marketplace listing demonstrates that hosted screenshot APIs exist and may return an image link or base64, but it does not verify Indian execution or those data-handling details. AWS Marketplace Verify these points with the specific provider before sending sensitive URLs or content.
Estimate cost and performance from your workload
For self-managed browser captures, the main Lambda compute drivers are invocation count, duration, and configured memory. Also account for object storage and image transfer if you persist outputs. API Gateway may add request charges. Full-page captures, slow pages, browser startup, and large output bytes affect duration or downstream transfer, so measure a representative mix of pages in the intended region rather than extrapolating from a small page or a generic monthly estimate. Concurrency and throttling matter as much as average request count: browser processes consume resources, and a burst can reach function or API quotas even if the daily average is low. Set admission limits, queue or reject excess work predictably, and monitor duration, errors, cold starts, output size, and throttles. No India-specific screenshot speed or cost benchmark is established here.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Chromium fails to launch: check the runtime and architecture match the packaged binary, executable permissions and launch configuration, and that the deployment artifact includes required browser files. Reconfirm compatibility against the package’s current documentation.
- Function times out: reduce the permitted navigation wait, use a selector or bounded readiness policy, constrain full-page captures, and consider asynchronous jobs for slow sites. Check function and gateway deadlines together.
- Screenshot is blank or incomplete: the page may render content after DOM readiness, require a selector or bounded wait, or defer images until scrolling. Choose a site-appropriate readiness policy and, if needed, scroll or otherwise trigger lazy content before capture.
- Response is rejected or corrupted: confirm the gateway integration treats the output as binary and the response is base64 encoded when required. For large results, store the file and return a reference instead of an inline body.
- Unexpected access to internal addresses: treat this as an SSRF vulnerability. Validate schemes and destinations before navigation, block internal address ranges, and revalidate every redirect and resolved address.
- India-dependent page looks different: verify actual function region and outbound egress behavior, plus the target site’s geolocation logic. Do not assume the caller’s location determines the browser’s location.
