Set the browser’s CSS viewport width and height in pixels before navigating to the page, then take a normal viewport screenshot. In Playwright, for example, use page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 }) before page.goto(). Keep viewport dimensions separate from device emulation and screenshot output scale: they control different things.
Capture an exact viewport with Playwright
Playwright’s viewport dimensions are CSS pixels. Replace the example dimensions below with the width and height you need. Set them before navigation, particularly when capturing a mobile layout, because some sites do not adapt as expected if the viewport changes only after the page loads.

})();Install Playwright for Node.js with npm install playwright. The screenshot call above captures the visible viewport, not the full scrollable page. The waitUntil: 'load' option waits for the page’s load event; pages that continue rendering after that may need an additional wait appropriate to the content.

For multiple pages or tests that should share the same size, configure the viewport when creating the context:

Playwright documents that changing the viewport with this method also resets the screen size. If you need finer independent control of screen and viewport dimensions, configure both in the browser context.
Viewport size, device emulation, and image scale
These settings answer different questions. The viewport determines the page’s visible CSS-pixel area and responsive layout. Device emulation adds characteristics such as a device profile, user agent, touch behavior, and device scale factor. Screenshot scale determines whether the output image uses CSS pixels or device pixels.

- Exact browser area: set explicit
widthandheightfor the viewport. A regular viewport screenshot is the right choice when the output should show only what fits in that area. - Mobile-device reproduction: use a device profile when you need more than a narrow layout, such as its user agent or touch behavior. If you spread a preset and then supply a custom viewport, put the explicit viewport after the preset so your dimensions take precedence.
- Output pixel dimensions: choose screenshot scale separately. A device-pixel output can have different image dimensions from a CSS-pixel output even though the page’s CSS viewport is unchanged.
Playwright’s setViewportSize() example resizes the page and resets screen size. Use context-level screen and viewport settings when those need independent values. See the Playwright Page API and browser context options.
Choose viewport or full-page capture
A viewport screenshot captures the visible browser page area at the dimensions you set. A full-page screenshot instead captures the entire scrollable page, so its output is taller and is not an exact viewport-sized image. Use full-page capture when you need content below the fold; use the default screenshot behavior when you need a specific visible viewport. Playwright’s screenshot tooling also supports capturing a target element. The screenshot options and scale behavior are described in the Playwright screenshot API.

Common problems and fixes
- The layout does not match the requested size: set the viewport before navigation. For mobile targets, changing dimensions after the page loads may not trigger the same layout as loading at those dimensions.
- The image dimensions are larger than expected: check screenshot scale. Device-pixel output can exceed the viewport’s CSS-pixel dimensions.
- The capture is unexpectedly tall: remove the full-page option; it captures the full scrollable page rather than just the viewport.
- A device preset uses different dimensions: configure your custom viewport after spreading the preset so the explicit width and height override the preset viewport.
- The screenshot catches an incomplete page: the page may still be rendering after navigation completes. Wait for the page state or specific content you need before calling
screenshot().
