But for a playlist, OBS uses a separate VLC Video source, which requires VLC, and playback also depends on the codecs inside the MOV. Test the clip in the source you plan to use first. If it fails or you need a more compatibility-focused file, convert it to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. A practical starting command is below; its CRF and audio bitrate are examples to test, not universal optimum settings.
Choose the OBS source before converting
For one file: Media Source
OBS documents Media Source for individual media files and lists MOV among its supported video file types. Whether a particular MOV plays still depends on its encoded streams and the playback stack on your system. The filename extension alone does not tell you whether it contains H.264, HEVC, ProRes, or another codec.

For a playlist: VLC Video
OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist source. VLC must be installed for this source to be available; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. The source supports playlist looping and shuffling, and has controls for visibility behavior, network caching, audio tracks, and subtitles. Its Loop Playlist option is on by default and Shuffle Playlist is off by default. These options control playback behavior, not video encoding quality. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Because Media Source and VLC Video are different source types, do not assume that a MOV accepted by one will work identically in the other. Add a representative clip to the actual source you intend to use before batch-converting a library.

When to copy streams and when to transcode
Try stream copy if the existing codecs fit
If the video and audio streams are compatible with MP4 and your intended OBS/VLC playback environment, you can try remuxing them without re-encoding. Stream copy avoids another lossy encode, but it does not change codecs: renaming or remuxing a file cannot make an unsupported stream compatible. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains stream mapping and -c copy.
ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy output.mp4
This selects the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. The question mark makes the audio mapping optional, so the command can also handle a file without audio. If the resulting MP4 does not play correctly, use a transcode instead.

Transcode for a compatibility-focused MP4
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide lists H.264 video and AAC audio for both MP4 and MOV, and describes H.264 and AAC as broadly supported. For a compatibility-minded MP4 output, use H.264 video and AAC audio:
ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
The command encodes the first video stream with libx264 and the first audio stream, when present, with AAC. -preset medium, -crf 20, and -b:a 192k are useful starting examples, not values tested or prescribed by OBS for every source. FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes the libx264 CRF and preset controls. Keep output options before the output filename because FFmpeg applies options to the next file.

Set quality, speed, resolution, and tracks for the source
CRF and preset
- CRF: It controls quality relative to file size when using libx264. Lower CRF values generally aim for higher quality and produce larger files; higher values generally reduce size at the cost of quality. Encode a short representative clip and inspect it before settling on a value.
- Preset: It trades encoding speed against compression efficiency. A faster preset finishes sooner; a slower one may use less space for comparable quality, but takes longer. The best choice depends on your machine, source, and time constraints.
Resolution and frame rate
Preserve the source resolution and frame rate unless you have a specific reason to change them, such as a target resolution, consistent playlist cadence, or playback-performance constraint. There is no single best resolution or frame rate for every MOV, and the cited OBS and FFmpeg guides do not prescribe one for this workflow. Avoid changing these values merely because you are converting containers.

Audio, multiple streams, and subtitles
A compatibility-focused transcode uses AAC audio. If the existing audio is suitable and preserving its encoded stream matters, you can copy it selectively, but first confirm that the output container and playback stack support it. The example commands intentionally choose only the first video and optional first audio stream. If the MOV contains alternate language tracks, additional audio, or subtitles you need, use explicit -map options rather than relying on automatic selection. Then check the VLC Video source’s audio-track and subtitle controls to ensure it plays the intended tracks.

- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and load a short test playlist. If the source is unavailable, install VLC; match its 64-bit edition to 64-bit OBS.
- Try the original MOV first. Confirm that both picture and audio play, and verify the intended audio or subtitle track if the file has several.
- If the MOV fails, inspect its codecs and streams, then try the stream-copy command when the existing streams are suitable for MP4.
- If stream copy still produces an incompatible result, transcode a short representative clip with the H.264/AAC command. Adjust CRF or preset only after reviewing the output and encoding time.
- Test the converted file in the same OBS/VLC source and playback setup you will use for the full playlist. Check looping, track selection, and any playback issue that matters to your production.
Troubleshoot common conversion and playback problems
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match. Install VLC, using 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- The MOV will not play: MOV is a container, not a codec. Inspect its video and audio streams; try H.264/AAC in MP4 if the existing codecs do not work in your setup.
- The copied MP4 still fails:
-c copypreserves the original encoded streams. Use a transcode rather than expecting a container change to convert codecs. - The file plays but has no sound: Check whether the input contains audio and whether the command mapped the intended stream. For multiple audio streams, select the desired one explicitly and verify VLC’s audio-track selection.
- The wrong language or subtitles appear: Map the intended streams explicitly during conversion, then check the playlist source’s track and subtitle controls.
- The converted clip looks worse or is too large: CRF is a quality/file-size trade-off. Test a short segment and adjust it; do not assume one CRF is optimal for all source footage.
- Conversion takes too long: Try a faster preset if speed matters more than compression efficiency. The practical result depends on the source and computer.
