Use a screenshot API that explicitly supports WebP, pass the page’s absolute URL, and set its format option to webp. Then save the response according to that API’s documented format: it may be raw image bytes, a redirect, or JSON containing an image URL. Request fields, authentication, and response handling differ by provider, so do not treat one API’s example as universal.
What you need to decide before sending a request
- WebP support: Confirm the selected endpoint lists WebP as an output format. A service may default to PNG, so request
webpexplicitly. - Request and authentication: Check whether the API expects GET or POST, and how it accepts credentials. Follow its exact field names and encoding rules.
- Response type: Determine whether success returns image bytes, redirects to an image, or provides a URL in JSON. Your client must handle the documented response rather than assume every successful request is an image.
- Capture scope: Choose the viewport and whether to capture the full page or a particular element. These settings change the image independently of its format.
- Rendering and output: Select the wait behavior and, if supported, device scale and WebP quality. Quality ranges and defaults are provider-specific.
The provider documentation is the authority for current limits, such as maximum dimensions, full-page behavior, timeouts, quotas, and cost. The examples below show two documented API patterns, not interchangeable request syntax.

Example: request WebP from Screenshot API
Screenshot API documents a POST endpoint at /api/v1/screenshot, a format option, and a WebP/JPEG quality range of 1–100. Its documentation also describes bearer-token or API-key header authentication, as well as a query-key convenience option. The following is a schematic JSON request using bearer authentication; use the exact authentication and response instructions in the provider’s current documentation.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →POST /api/v1/screenshot
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY
Content-Type: application/json
{"url":"https://example.com","format":"webp","quality":80}
Here, quality is an API setting, not a universal WebP recommendation. Adjust it for the intended use and inspect the output. Screenshot API documents GET responses as JSON by default and also describes a redirect option; for POST, follow the documented response contract rather than blindly writing every response body to a file. See Screenshot API documentation.

Example: retrieve raw WebP bytes with Webstractor
Webstractor documents a GET route that returns raw image bytes, with an example saving the result as screenshot.webp. Its documentation lists a default WebP quality of 82. The following Python example illustrates the raw-byte pattern; check the current endpoint path, authentication, and parameters in Webstractor’s documentation before using it, since they differ from the POST example above.
import requests
response = requests.get(
"https://webstractor.com/api/screenshot",
params={
"url": "https://example.com",
"format": "webp",
},
timeout=90,
)
response.raise_for_status()
content_type = response.headers.get("Content-Type", "").lower()
if "image/webp" not in content_type:
raise ValueError(f"Expected image/webp, received {content_type or 'no Content-Type'}")
with open("screenshot.webp", "wb") as image_file:
image_file.write(response.content)
The URL above illustrates the documented GET/raw-bytes approach; verify the exact route and required key or other credentials against Webstractor’s documentation. Do not assume the sample’s route, quality, or response behavior applies to another provider.
Save and validate the result correctly
- Check the HTTP status. Treat non-success responses as errors before saving a file.
- Match handling to the response. Write bytes only when the endpoint returns raw image data. If it returns a redirect, follow it as documented; if it returns JSON, parse the documented image URL and retrieve it.
- Check the content type. When available, confirm the response identifies WebP (commonly
image/webp) before naming the output.webp. - Open the file. Confirm the page actually rendered and that the capture has the intended viewport, scope, and visual quality. A filename extension alone does not convert or validate an image.
Choose capture settings for the intended image
Viewport, full page, and element capture
Set width and height for a viewport capture. If the API supports full-page mode, use it when the entire document is needed; check documented dimension or page-length limits. For a focused image, an element selector may capture only a chosen region where supported.

Wait behavior and page readiness
A page can be technically loaded before its important content appears. Use the API’s documented wait strategy—such as waiting for a selector, a delay, or network idle—when available. The right choice depends on the page: network-idle waits can be unsuitable for pages with continuing requests, while a fixed delay can waste time or still be too short.
Scale and WebP quality
Device scale affects pixel dimensions and detail; use a higher scale when the image needs finer rendering, while accounting for larger output. Quality is a provider-specific control: Screenshot API documents 1–100 for JPEG/WebP, while Webstractor documents a WebP default of 82. Neither value establishes a shared default or ideal setting across APIs.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; cookie banners are accepted and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, with each step optional. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

Troubleshooting
The file is not WebP
Check that the API explicitly received its WebP format option and that you are saving the image response rather than JSON or an error body. Inspect the response content type and open the image with a viewer that supports WebP.

The saved file contains JSON or an error message
Do not assume a success-shaped response body is image data. Check the HTTP status and the provider’s response documentation. Some endpoints return JSON by default or provide a redirect or hosted image URL; parse or follow that response as specified.
Recommended Free Tools
The capture is blank, incomplete, or missing images
Confirm the target is an absolute, publicly reachable URL and that the API has enough time to render it. Adjust the documented wait strategy; for lazy-loaded content, use a provider option designed to wait for rendering or scroll/load content if available. Check whether the requested viewport or full-page dimensions exceed service limits.
The request fails authentication or validation
Verify the key, required header or query parameter, HTTP method, URL encoding, and exact option spelling. Keep production credentials out of public browser code and logs; use a server-side request and the provider’s recommended authentication mechanism.
Best Value
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning

The output is too large or looks poor
Review viewport dimensions and device scale, then adjust the API’s supported WebP quality setting. Recheck the resulting file for the use case: quality values and defaults are not portable between providers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reliability, performance, and cost checks
Hosted screenshot APIs avoid running a browser capture stack yourself, but the available documentation here does not establish a neutral comparison of provider speed, reliability, pricing, quotas, or data handling. Before integrating one, check its current terms and limits, how it reports timeouts and failed page loads, and whether it returns bytes, redirects, or URLs. If you capture repeatedly, consider documented caching and request limits; do not infer cost or cache behavior from another provider’s settings.
For a local browser-based pipeline, you control the browser and capture flow but also take responsibility for browser installation, page readiness, WebP encoding, scaling, and failure handling. The API approach is useful when you want a request/response interface; select based on your deployment constraints rather than an unsupported claim that one method is universally faster or better.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same WebP request parameters with every screenshot API?
No. HTTP method, authentication, parameter names, defaults, and response type are provider-specific; follow the selected endpoint’s current documentation.
Does changing a screenshot filename to .webp convert it to WebP?
No. The endpoint must generate WebP bytes, or you must convert an image with a separate tool. Validate the response format before saving it with that extension.
