To broadcast a Malayalam internet radio station on YouTube from India, prepare a rights-cleared audio program and visual, confirm your channel can go live, then send the finished mix to YouTube Live Control Room through an encoder. You can run a music-only stream, a presenter-led show, or a combination; the equipment depends on how much control your production needs. The main risk is music copyright: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt a stream even when you believe you have permission.
How do I start a Malayalam radio channel on YouTube?
YouTube Live supports several broadcast methods, including an encoder workflow suited to a program with an audio mix, graphics, microphones, or other production elements. Before buying equipment, decide what the station will broadcast and confirm that the channel is eligible to go live.

- Choose the format. Decide whether you will air music only, presenter links, interviews, or a mix. List every recording, composition, performance, visual, and spoken contribution you plan to use.
- Clear the rights. Document permissions for the material and the intended uses, including live online transmission and any saved archive. For recorded music, see the copyright section below before scheduling a show.
- Check YouTube live eligibility. YouTube’s current Get started with live streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. It also says streamers must be at least 16.
- Choose a production setup. Select a software or hardware encoder appropriate to your program. YouTube describes encoder streaming and gives examples of connected production hardware; it does not require one particular encoder model.
- Build and test the audio chain. If you need separate microphone and playback levels, route them through a mixer or audio interface. Listen to the complete mix, including presenter microphones and playback, before broadcasting.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, and configure your encoder with the stream settings shown there. Start the broadcast from the encoder and YouTube Studio, following the prompts in the current interface.
- Monitor the live feed. Watch YouTube Studio for stream health notices and keep an eye on the audio during the program. A private rehearsal of the whole signal path is prudent, especially before a long broadcast.
- Choose whether to retain the archive. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it.
A static or gently animated radio graphic can accompany an audio-first program, but YouTube does not require a particular visual. Make sure you also have the rights to any artwork, video, or other visual material you show.

Only if you have the permissions needed for the specific recordings and compositions, the broadcast, and any other intended uses. Buying a song, subscribing to a music service, or having permission to play music at a venue does not by itself establish that you may transmit it on YouTube.

YouTube’s Copyright issues with live streams says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it if the third-party content remains.
Even a license may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Contact the rights holder before going live and confirm the channel is allowlisted where necessary; do not assume that a license alone will make the stream safe from automated interruption.

What to confirm with a rights holder
- Which specific sound recordings and compositions are covered.
- Whether the permission covers live online transmission on YouTube, and the territories where it applies.
- Whether you may keep an archive or video on demand after the live program ends.
- Whether monetization is permitted, if you plan to use it.
- How Content ID claims will be handled and whether the channel must be allowlisted before broadcast.
India’s official Copyright Office materials surfaced in the published record include the Copyright Act and a summary of exceptions such as fair dealing for specified purposes. Those materials do not establish a general permission to stream commercial songs as an internet radio service. The exact rights needed depend on your repertoire and business model; get advice specific to your planned operation rather than treating a generic license or exception as clearance.
What equipment do I need to stream internet radio from India?
Start with the audio source, an encoder, and a stable production workflow. Add hardware only when it solves a real need, such as balancing a host microphone against music or monitoring separate inputs.

For a music-first show, you may not need a microphone. For a host-led program, a USB audio interface or a USB microphone can be a practical option, depending on whether you need to mix several inputs or only capture one voice. These are production choices, not YouTube eligibility requirements.
Which India-specific rules and figures apply?
Do not treat requirements for a government webcast service as YouTube’s technical minimums. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) describes its webcast service as serving Central and State Government institutions. For an agency feed within that service, NIC lists an audio-video setup and encoder, outbound access to RTMP port 1935, and dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream. NIC also lists an advance payment of ₹10,000 for a one-day government webcast service and at least two working days’ notice. The NIC page does not state a publication year for those figures. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced draft Telecommunications (Television, Radio and Associated Services) Rules on 22 July 2026. The announcement says the draft consolidates guidelines that include FM radio and community radio; it does not settle whether those draft rules or existing permissions apply to a private, internet-only YouTube station. For a specific station, check applicable current requirements with qualified Indian legal or regulatory advisers rather than inferring its status from the draft announcement.

Common problems and what to check
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether a live-stream restriction has applied in the preceding 90 days, as described in YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
- The live program is interrupted or replaced with a placeholder: A third-party content match may have been detected. Review the material in the stream, confirm that your permissions cover the use, and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting before trying again. - The host cannot be heard or the music level is wrong: Check the selected audio inputs and the routing through your interface or mixer. Listen to the encoder’s outgoing mix, not just the local microphone or playback source.
- The stream does not appear as expected in Live Control Room: Confirm that the encoder is using the stream settings for the intended YouTube broadcast and follow the status notices in Studio. Recheck the full encoder-to-YouTube signal path in a rehearsal.
- You are applying NIC’s network figures to a private YouTube setup: Those bandwidth and port details are for the NIC government webcast service. Consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your own network and encoder documentation for your actual setup.
