For a quick image, Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool can save the visible area or the full page. For a command-line capture or a report PDF, use Chrome Headless. Both approaches save page output without browser controls.
Choose the right capture for your report
- Use a PNG when the report needs a fixed visual of the page or a selected area.
- Use a PDF when the recipient needs a document or you want to review a printable artifact.
- Choose full page or visible area deliberately. A full-page image includes content beyond the current viewport; a visible-area capture covers only what is on screen.
No single format is universally better. Consider the deliverable, how much of the page belongs in the report, and whether print layout matters. Open and inspect the saved file before using it; check legibility, page breaks, and PDF headers and footers.

Firefox: save a full-page or visible-area screenshot
- Right-click an empty area of the webpage and choose Take Screenshot. On Windows or Linux, the documented shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + S; on macOS, it is Command + Shift + S.
- Select Save full page to capture the entire page, or Save visible to capture the current viewport.
- Choose Download to save the image or Copy to put it on the clipboard. Mozilla says downloaded screenshots are PNG files saved to the default downloads location. Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot instructions describe these options.
If the report needs just one portion of a page, select a region or an automatically highlighted page part instead of capturing unrelated content. Firefox’s controls and wording can vary by version; its help page provides a version selector.
Firefox Developer Tools: capture an element or a particular state
For more control, Firefox Developer Tools can capture the full page or a single element. If the screenshot toolbar button is missing, enable it in Developer Tools settings under Available Toolbox Buttons. The Web Console’s :screenshot helper supports options including --fullpage, --selector, --delay, --dpr, a filename, and clipboard output. --selectorwhen you need one page element rather than the whole page. - Use
--delaywhen capturing a hover state or a menu that needs time to open. - Use
--dprto control the device-pixel ratio for the capture.
Chrome Headless: save a screenshot or PDF
Chrome’s Headless command-line mode captures page output without the browser toolbar. The official Chrome Headless command-line reference documents --screenshot for an image and --print-to-pdf for a PDF.
Save a screenshot
Run this command in a terminal, replacing the URL with the page you need. It saves screenshot.png in the current working directory:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.comThe documented example uses a 412,892 viewport. Change those dimensions to suit the report. The output is a viewport capture; use Firefox’s full-page option if you need a straightforward documented full-page image workflow.

Save a PDF without generated header and footer
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.comThe --no-pdf-header-footer flag omits Chrome’s generated print header (date and time) and footer (URL and page number). Chrome’s documentation says the older flag name --print-to-pdf-no-header may be needed with older versions. Check the PDF after saving, especially its page breaks and margins.

Allow time for the page to render
Chrome Headless provides --timeout to set the maximum wait before capture, even if the page is still loading, and --virtual-time-budget for time-dependent page code. A delay does not prove that all dynamic content has finished loading, so inspect the result for missing images, late-loading sections, or incomplete content. The Chrome reference’s 5000-millisecond timeout is an example value, not a universal setting.
Common problems and fixes
- The toolbar is still in the image: You likely captured the whole desktop or browser window. Use a webpage capture feature—Firefox’s Take Screenshot or Chrome Headless’s
--screenshot—instead. - The screenshot cuts off content: In Firefox, choose Save full page rather than Save visible. For a Chrome screenshot, the documented example sets a viewport size; inspect whether that viewport includes what the report needs.
- A menu or hover effect is missing: In Firefox Developer Tools, use the
:screenshothelper’s--delayoption to allow the state to appear before capture. - Images or dynamic content are absent: The page may not have finished rendering when captured. Try an appropriate wait or timing option, then open the output and verify the actual content; no wait value guarantees every site has completed loading.
- The PDF includes a date, URL, or page number: Use
--no-pdf-header-footer. If that flag is unsupported by an older Chrome version, try the documented older name--print-to-pdf-no-header. - You cannot find Firefox’s screenshot button: Right-click an empty page area, or enable the screenshot toolbar button in Developer Tools settings under Available Toolbox Buttons.

Can I copy a Firefox screenshot instead of downloading it?
Yes. After capturing, choose Copy to place the image on the clipboard.
