For a specific font that must be present, request it with document.fonts.load() and handle failure as well. Font readiness means loading and layout have settled; it does not, by itself, prove that the intended typeface rendered instead of a fallback.
Wait for content first, then wait for web fonts
A reliable capture has two separate readiness checks: the content you intend to photograph must be present, and the document’s fonts must have settled after that content is in place. This order matters for pages that insert content after navigation, because newly added text can trigger additional font loads.

With Playwright, wait for navigation, check a selector that represents the finished capture area, then await the browser’s font readiness promise immediately before the screenshot:

If the page updates asynchronously, wait for that final state before evaluating document.fonts.ready. Request a specific font when it is critical
If the screenshot must use a known face, explicitly request it with the CSS font shorthand that matches the page’s family, weight, and size. Then wait for general readiness:

Handle that rejection as a capture failure when the named font is a requirement; do not silently treat fallback rendering as success. What navigation and font readiness each tell you
Playwright navigation states such as load and domcontentloaded mark document navigation milestones. They do not mean that later font loading is complete. Likewise, document.fonts.ready is a font-and-layout settling signal, not an assertion that a preferred remote font loaded or rendered. A failed font request or unavailable font service can leave the page using fallback typography even when the promise resolves.

Playwright offers networkidle, but its Page API labels that state discouraged for testing and recommends relying on web assertions for readiness. Network activity alone is not a dependable way to establish that the intended text and fonts are in their final state. Prefer a page-specific content check, followed by the font wait.

Choose the screenshot scope and repeatability settings
Playwright’s page.screenshot() can capture the viewport or full scrollable page, a clipped region, and output at CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. It also has animation handling and a screenshot-operation timeout. Fix the viewport and content state when you need repeatable captures; choose full-page, clipped, or viewport capture according to what the screenshot is for.
For visual regression tests specifically, Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with its expectation. It is a test-runner assertion, not a general-purpose replacement for page.screenshot() in an ordinary script. Its options include animation handling and pixel scale. See the PageAssertions API.

Using Puppeteer instead
Puppeteer provides Page.screenshot() for a page and ElementHandle.screenshot() for a selected element. Its screenshots guide shows navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but that example is not evidence that network idleness validates the final font face. Apply the same readiness approach: wait for the actual target content, then wait for font readiness before capture. - The screenshot shows fallback typography: Check the browser’s failed font requests and the font server’s response. Confirm that the page has reached its final content state before awaiting fonts. If one face is essential, explicitly request it with
document.fonts.load()and treat a rejection as a failure. document.fonts.readyresolves, but the typeface still looks wrong: Readiness does not certify that a named font loaded or rendered. Inspect page-specific font evidence and the relevant face’s loading state rather than assuming the ready promise guarantees the preferred family.- The screenshot operation hangs or times out: Record the browser engine and exact automation version, inspect
document.fonts.statusand individual face statuses where possible, review failed font requests, and reduce the case to a minimal page. Keep a finite screenshot timeout so a stuck capture cannot block the job indefinitely.
A Playwright issue opened on September 29, 2026 reports a Linux WebKit screenshot timing out while waiting for fonts in Playwright 1.63.0; the report also describes a passing control run on 1.60.0 under its reproduction conditions. This is a version- and reproduction-specific issue, not a general diagnosis of WebKit captures. The reporter notes that bypassing the wait can emit an image without repairing font state. Check the report at Playwright issue #42986 if your environment resembles it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use network idle instead of waiting for fonts?
No. Network idleness does not establish that the target content is final or that the intended font rendered. Wait for the relevant content and then use the browser’s font readiness signal.
Does a successful font load prove every character uses that font?
No. A successful `document.fonts.load()` concerns the matching load operation; it does not prove every glyph or all page text rendered in that face.
