Open the menu in the browser, wait until it is visible, then capture the page or the menu element. With Playwright, use page.screenshot() when you need the surrounding page, or a locator’s screenshot() when you want a close crop. A screenshot call captures the current rendered state; it does not open the menu for you.
Choose a page screenshot or a menu crop
| Capture | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport screenshot | You need the open menu in context with nearby page content, or cannot reliably target the menu. | Includes the visible page view, not just the menu. |
| Full-page screenshot | You need the full scrollable page as well as its current rendered content. | A transient menu may appear only in the current viewport, so full-page capture is not automatically the best choice. |
| Locator screenshot | You need a close crop of the menu. | Requires a locator that matches the visible menu and remains attached through capture. |
| Chrome DevTools Protocol capture | Your workflow already uses browser debugging commands or requires a specific clipping region. | Lower-level workflow; DOM inspection and image capture are separate operations. |
Playwright screenshot styling can pierce Shadow DOM and inner frames, which is useful for normalizing a visual test or hiding dynamic content. It does not open a closed menu. Use the option only when styling the page for the capture is acceptable. See the Playwright Page API and Screenshots guide.

Capture an open menu with Playwright
Before you start
- Use an installed Playwright setup and a browser supported by that installation.
- Identify the page’s actual menu-opening control and menu locator. Accessible roles and names are a good first choice when the site exposes them.
- Make sure your script reaches the page after navigation and before the menu interaction. The examples below assume a configured
pageobject.
Capture just the menu
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Open menu' }).click();
await page.getByRole('menu').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.getByRole('menu').screenshot({ path: 'open-menu.png' });
Replace Open menu and menu with the accessible name and role exposed by the site. Waiting for visibility helps avoid capturing before the menu is rendered, but it does not guarantee that an animation has finished.
Capture the menu with page context
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Open menu' }).click();
await page.getByRole('menu').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-with-open-menu.png' });
To capture the full scrollable page instead of the current viewport, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });. A full-page screenshot may not preserve a transient menu in the way you expect; inspect the saved image and prefer the viewport capture if the menu is only open in the current view.

Stabilize a visual-test capture
Playwright provides screenshot options for disabling animations and applying a stylesheet. The style option pierces Shadow DOM and inner frames, so it can help suppress changing elements in a controlled test. Keep the menu-opening interaction separate: styling affects screenshot rendering, it does not trigger the component’s interaction.
For the exact options supported by your installed version, consult the Page API and Locator API.

Understand Shadow DOM targeting limits
An open shadow root is inspectable by browser tooling, but custom components differ in structure and accessibility markup. A user-facing locator such as getByRole('menu') may work when the menu exposes that role; it is not a universal selector. A menu can also be rendered in a portal, or the control and menu can use nonstandard markup. Inspect the rendered page and adapt your locator to the site rather than assuming every component has the same tree.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Playwright’s locator screenshot scrolls the matched element into view, performs actionability checks, and can fail if the element detaches. If another element covers the menu, that covering content can affect the image. These behaviors are documented in the Locator API.

Use Chrome DevTools Protocol for clipping or inspection
The Chrome DevTools Protocol Page.captureScreenshot supports a clip region and a captureBeyondViewport parameter. Use it when your capture workflow needs lower-level control over the image area; see the Page domain reference for the protocol parameters.
When you need to inspect the composed document structure, the separate DOMSnapshot domain can return a flattened DOM tree that includes Shadow DOM. It is an inspection aid, not an image capture method. See the DOMSnapshot reference.

Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete menu
- The screenshot has no menu: trigger it through the same interaction a user would perform, then wait for the menu to become visible before capturing.
- The menu is partly animated: wait for the transition to finish, or disable animations in a controlled screenshot test using Playwright’s documented screenshot options.
- The locator does not match: inspect the rendered page and adjust the role or selector for that component. Portal rendering or nonstandard accessibility markup can make a generic locator unsuitable.
- The element screenshot fails: the target may have detached or failed actionability checks. Re-open the menu, wait for it to be visible, then try again; use a page screenshot if the target cannot be reliably matched.
- The crop shows an overlay or misses context: another element may cover the menu, or an element-only crop may be too tight. Capture the viewport to include the surrounding page and inspect the result.
- The menu closes before capture: check for focus or blur behavior in the component and ensure the interaction does not move focus or otherwise dismiss the menu before the screenshot call.
- You need to debug the structure rather than capture it: inspect the composed tree with the DevTools Protocol DOMSnapshot domain; use Page capture separately for the image.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It captures the page state it can load; it does not provide a documented interaction parameter for opening a particular menu, so a menu that requires a click must already be open through a suitable page workflow for it to appear in the shot.
