A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11When a website menu closes as soon as the pointer moves away, use the Mac Screenshot app’s timer: press Shift-Command-5, choose a capture mode, set a timer in Options, start the capture, then move the pointer onto the menu trigger and hold it there. The timed hover sequence is a practical workaround based on macOS’s timer control, not an Apple-documented recipe for every website.
Choose the capture method that fits the menu
| Method | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Timed whole-screen capture | The menu closes when the pointer leaves its trigger. | Captures extra screen area; crop afterward if needed. |
| Direct menu capture | The menu stays open while you move the pointer to it. | Frames the menu tightly, but may not include much page context. |
| Selected-area capture | The menu stays open while you define a region, or you need surrounding page content. | Dragging the selection can dismiss a fragile hover menu. |
Capture a menu that closes when the pointer moves
- Open the page and arrange it so the hover trigger and the area you want to show are visible.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot. Apple says Screenshot is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 or later; see Apple’s Mac screenshot guide.
- Choose Capture Entire Screen for the least fussy pointer movement. Choose Capture Selected Portion only if you can frame the image without closing the menu.
- Open Options and set a timer. Apple documents the timer control but does not specify a universally best delay for hover menus.
- Start the capture. Before the timer expires, move the pointer onto the page control that opens the menu. Keep it there until the menu opens and the screenshot is taken.
- If you captured the whole screen, use the floating thumbnail to edit or crop the image, or let it save to the configured location.
The full-screen approach avoids needing to move the pointer to draw a crop while the menu is open. If the menu still closes, adjust the timer and repeat; hover behavior depends on the site.

Capture a menu that stays open
Capture the menu directly
- Open the menu by hovering over its trigger.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Click the menu to capture it. Hold Option while clicking if you want to exclude a window shadow.
Apple documents this window-and-menu capture workflow in Take a screenshot on Mac. It works best when the menu remains open as you move the pointer.

Capture a region with page context
Open the menu, press Shift-Command-4, and drag over the menu and any nearby page content you want included. Apple also documents dragging across menu items to capture a menu. On sites where pointer movement dismisses the menu, use the timer method instead.

Useful screenshot controls
- Whole screen: press Shift-Command-3.
- Screenshot controls: press Shift-Command-5. Options include a timer, save location, floating thumbnail, and whether to show the pointer.
- Copy rather than save: hold Control with a screenshot shortcut. Apple also documents Control-clicking the floating thumbnail to copy.
- Screenshot format: on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple lists SDR (PNG) and HDR (HEIF) screenshot formats. Availability depends on the Mac model and macOS version.
- Video: Shift-Command-5 also provides screen-recording controls, useful for documenting an interaction but unnecessary for a still screenshot.
Fix common problems
- The menu closes before the screenshot: use a timer, start capture, then return the pointer to the hover trigger before the countdown ends. The exact timing varies by site.
- The screenshot includes too much or misses context: capture the whole screen and crop afterward, or use a selected area if the menu remains open while you frame it.
- The pointer is missing or unwanted: check the pointer setting under Screenshot’s Options.
- The file saves to the wrong place: change the save location in Options. Use Control with the shortcut if you want to copy the screenshot instead.
- A window capture is unavailable: Apple notes that some apps restrict window screenshots, citing Apple TV and DVD Player as examples. This is a general limitation, not evidence that ordinary web pages are blocked.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot through an API rather than macOS’s built-in controls, ScreenshotNeo takes website screenshots from a single GET request. For this hover-menu task, note that a remote screenshot request does not reproduce your local Mac pointer hovering over a page; use the Mac steps above when the menu depends on that pointer interaction.
