Use Chrome DevTools’ Device Mode to save a webpage without tabs, the address bar, or other browser controls. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page. Both are built into Chrome and need no separate screenshot app.
Choose the kind of screenshot you need
| What you want | Chrome method | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Visible page area | Device Mode > More options > Capture screenshot | The current viewport, without Chrome’s browser toolbar. |
| Entire long page | Device Mode > More options > Capture a full size screenshot | The full page, including content below the fold. |
| A custom rectangle | Command Menu > Capture area screenshot | The area you drag over; DevTools must be docked. |
| One page element | Elements panel > select the node > Command Menu > Capture node screenshot | The selected HTML element, including a node larger than the screen. |
| A mobile-shaped page image | Device Mode > set a mobile viewport > capture | The page rendered at an emulated mobile size. Emulation is not identical to a real phone. |
Capture the visible viewport or full page
- Open DevTools. Chrome DevTools is built into Chrome. Open it through Chrome’s menu or use the platform-specific shortcuts listed in the Chrome DevTools overview.
- Turn on the Device toolbar. In DevTools, click the device toolbar toggle to enter Device Mode.
- Open More options in the Device Mode toolbar.
- Choose the capture type. Click Capture screenshot for what is currently visible, or Capture a full size screenshot to include the page below the fold. Chrome saves the image as a download.
Use the page-capture commands rather than an operating-system screenshot of the Chrome window: the latter includes browser controls. Device Mode also lets you set a viewport for a mobile-shaped capture. A device frame is optional; leave it off if you want only the page content.

Capture a custom area
- Keep DevTools docked to the Chrome window. Area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type screenshot, then choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag over the rectangle you want to capture.
If the command is missing or the selection does not start, dock DevTools and search “screenshot” in the Command Menu again. See Chrome’s Command Menu instructions for the documented workflow; that page was last updated 2024-09-04 UTC.
Capture one element on the page
- Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
- Choose the element in the page or in the DOM tree.
- Open the Command Menu using the shortcut for your operating system.
- Search for Capture node screenshot and run it.
This is useful for a card, diagram, or other component without capturing the rest of the page. DevTools can capture nodes larger than the screen; inspect the saved image to confirm the specific page rendered as you expect. Chrome’s DevTools screenshot tips describe node, mobile, full-page, and area captures.

When a mobile screenshot needs to be accurate
Device Mode is useful for a mobile viewport preview, but Chrome says it cannot simulate every aspect of a real mobile device. For a screenshot where actual phone behavior matters, capture on a physical device. For a clean page image without a device frame, leave the frame disabled before taking the screenshot. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.
