To capture everything in a page’s scrollable document, navigate to the page and call page.screenshot with the full-page option enabled:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
In Python, the equivalent is await page.screenshot(path='page.png', full_page=True). A normal screenshot captures only the current viewport. Full-page capture asks Playwright to render the complete scrollable page, including content below the fold.
What “full-page” means in Playwright
Playwright distinguishes a viewport screenshot from a full-page screenshot. page.screenshot() captures what is currently visible in the browser viewport. Setting fullPage: true (JavaScript/TypeScript) or full_page=True (Python) captures the full scrollable document, as if the page were displayed on a screen tall enough to contain it all.
The option applies to a page, not automatically to every nested scrolling panel. A dashboard may have a document that is short while an inner div contains hundreds of rows behind its own scrollbar. That inner scroller requires separate handling.

JavaScript or TypeScript: save a complete scrolling screenshot
Install Playwright in your project, then use a browser context and page. This complete example waits for navigation and writes a PNG file:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
fullPage: true
});
await browser.close();
Replace the URL with the page you need. The path property writes the image directly to disk. If you need the bytes for image comparison, upload, or another post-processing step, omit path and keep the returned buffer:
const imageBytes = await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true });
TypeScript uses the same Playwright API and option names.
Set the page state before capturing
A screenshot records the state that exists at the instant the method runs. Put the page into the required state first: select the right account or route, choose a theme, dismiss an overlay, or wait for a key component. For a known readiness condition, wait for a selector rather than relying only on a fixed delay:
await page.goto('https://example.com/products');
await page.locator('[data-testid="product-grid"]').waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'products.png', fullPage: true });
Use a delay only when the application genuinely needs time after a state change. A selector-based wait is usually easier to explain and maintain.
Python: capture the full scrollable page
Python uses the same operation with snake-case option names:

Page screenshot versus element screenshot
| Goal | API | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Entire scrollable page | page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
The document from top to bottom |
| Current viewport | page.screenshot() |
Only the visible browser viewport |
| One component | locator.screenshot() |
The matched element, clipped to its bounds |
| Bring an element into view | locator.scrollIntoViewIfNeeded() |
Scrolls the element into view; it does not capture the whole page |
For a fixed-size header, card, or chart, an element screenshot is often the right choice:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
The locator is brought into view before capture. If it has its own scrollbar, however, the screenshot shows the element’s currently scrolled content, not a stitched image of every row hidden inside it. To document an inner scrolling panel, scroll that panel deliberately and capture the relevant states or sections.
Lazy-loaded and dynamic content
fullPage: true requests a tall capture; it is not a universal instruction to trigger every site’s lazy-loading mechanism. Some pages load images, articles, or rows only after an intersection observer sees them. Others replace content while you scroll.
Handle that behavior according to the application:
- Navigate to the target route.
- Wait for the initial content that proves the page is ready.
- For a page that loads content in response to scrolling, scroll through it using a strategy appropriate to that site.
- Check that the expected content or final marker appeared.
- Call the full-page screenshot method.
There is no single scroll script that is correct for every application. A test page might need a controlled loop, while an infinite feed may never have a meaningful “bottom.” Define a stopping condition such as a footer, a known item count, or a page-specific loading indicator. If content is animated, wait for the animation or disable it in your test environment so the capture is deterministic.
Useful screenshot options
The Page screenshot API also supports options for output and composition. The exact spelling and availability can vary with the Playwright version, so check the current Page API reference when upgrading.

For a full-page image that is later compared pixel by pixel, keep the viewport, device scale, fonts, time zone, data, and animation state consistent between runs. A different font load or timestamp can create differences even when the layout is correct.
Inner scrolling containers: a reliable approach
First identify which element owns the scrollbar. If the browser window scrolls, use the page-level full-page option. If a panel has CSS such as overflow: auto and a fixed height, page capture does not expand that panel into an infinitely tall element.
For a specific panel, bring it into view and capture its current state:
const panel = page.locator('.results-panel');
await panel.scrollIntoViewIfNeeded();
await panel.screenshot({ path: 'results-visible.png' });
To capture more of the panel, use application-specific scrolling and take multiple images, or change the test page’s layout so all rows are rendered at once. Do not describe scrollIntoViewIfNeeded() as a full-page capture; it only changes the scroll position to make the locator visible.
Common failures and fixes
The image stops at the fold
Cause: the screenshot call omitted the full-page option or used the wrong language spelling. Fix: use fullPage: true in JavaScript/TypeScript and full_page=True in Python. Confirm that you are calling page.screenshot, not an element screenshot.
Images or rows are missing below the fold
Cause: the site lazy-loads content only after a scroll or viewport intersection. Fix: perform the site-specific scrolling and wait for the expected content before taking the screenshot. Full-page mode alone does not promise that every lazy-load trigger has run.

A cookie banner, chat bubble, or modal covers the page
Cause: the overlay is part of the page state at capture time. Fix: accept or dismiss it, or hide the relevant selector in your test setup before the screenshot. Waiting for the page load event does not automatically remove overlays.
The screenshot method throws for a locator
Cause: the matched element was detached or rerendered before capture. Fix: locate it again after the state change, wait for it to be attached and visible, then call locator.screenshot().
The inner panel is still truncated
Cause: the panel, rather than the document, owns the scrollbar. Fix: capture the panel at deliberate scroll positions or alter the page for a non-scrolling test view. A page-level full-page request does not stitch inner-scroll contents.
The file is blank or captures an incomplete route
Cause: capture started before the application finished routing or rendering. Fix: wait for a route-specific selector or other readiness signal, and verify the content in the page before saving the image.

A full-page image is larger and can take longer to encode and write than a viewport image, especially for long documents. Keep captures focused: use an element screenshot or a clip when the test does not require the entire document. For visual regression, save a stable artifact and keep environmental inputs consistent. For reporting, return the screenshot buffer when an in-memory pipeline is more convenient than temporary files.
Very long or continuously loading pages need a defined boundary. Capture after a known footer or item count rather than waiting for a feed that intentionally keeps requesting more data. Also distinguish a failed readiness check from a successful screenshot of an empty state; both are technically images, but only one represents the page you intended to test.

If you need a screenshot service instead of managing a Playwright browser, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to try: it produces clean shots, bills only clean shots, and its paid entry plan is $5 for 3,000 shots.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. The API accepts full-page capture, lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, custom JavaScript and CSS, waits, device and viewport settings, cookies and headers, blocking rules, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and more. Its consent step accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ
Does full-page mode physically scroll the browser?
It requests a capture of the page’s full scrollable document. Do not rely on that request alone to trigger a site’s custom lazy-loading logic; prepare dynamic content first.
Can I use full-page mode on a locator?
The full-page option belongs to the page screenshot API. Locator screenshots are clipped to the matched element and show its current scroll position when that element scrolls.
Should I save a file or return bytes?
Use path for a straightforward artifact. Omit it when another step needs the screenshot buffer in memory.
