How to Capture a Scrolling Screenshot of a Web App for a User Guide

Use Chrome or Firefox DevTools to capture a web app beyond the visible viewport, choose the right capture scope, and check the image for missing or clipped content.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture a web app beyond the visible browser window, use the browser’s full-page screenshot command: in Chrome DevTools, open Device Mode, then choose More options → Capture a full size screenshot. In Firefox, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page in DevTools settings, then use the screenshot button. Check the saved image before adding it to your guide—dynamic and nested-scroll interfaces may not capture as expected.

Prepare the app screen you want to document

  1. Open the app and navigate to the exact screen and state the guide should show.
  2. Close menus, dialogs, or other transient UI unless the guide is specifically explaining them.
  3. Decide what the reader needs to see: the whole document, the current viewport, a selected area, or one component.

The browser capture command does not prepare the app for you. Confirm that the desired state is visible before taking the screenshot.

Capture the full page in Chrome

  1. Open the web app page in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools and enable Device Mode.
  3. In the Device Mode toolbar, open More options.
  4. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome documents this as capturing the whole page, including content outside the viewport. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.

Capture the full page in Firefox

  1. Open Firefox DevTools settings.
  2. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  3. Use the screenshot button in the toolbox to capture the page. Firefox saves the screenshot in Downloads.

Firefox also documents a Web Console screenshot command with a --fullpage option, as well as capture of a single element. See Firefox’s screenshot documentation.

Choose the right capture scope

Scope Use it when How
Full page The guide needs to show document content beyond the current viewport. Use Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot command or enable Firefox’s entire-page screenshot button.
Viewport The instruction concerns only what is currently visible, or a long full-page image would be hard to read. Take a regular screenshot of the visible browser area.
Selected area You need a focused crop from the page. In Chrome, open the Command Menu, type “screenshot,” choose Capture area screenshot, then drag over the page. See Chrome’s Command Menu documentation.
Single element The guide explains one component, such as a form or panel. In Firefox’s Inspector HTML pane, open the element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node. See Firefox’s screenshot documentation.

Inspect the result before using it

Open the saved image and verify that it shows the intended app state and includes the content needed to follow the guide. Pay particular attention to:

Philips 24 Inch Computer Monitor FHD 100Hz VA VESA Flicker-Free, 241V8LB | 1920×1080 LED Monitor, 4ms GtG, Adaptive Sync, HDMI 1.4, Tilt Adjust, Low Blue Light, 4yr Advance Replacement Warranty
  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  • Missing sections, especially content inside nested scroll areas.
  • Repeated or awkwardly placed sticky headers.
  • Clipped content at the edges or bottom of the image.
  • Dynamic content that changed while the screenshot was being captured.

The cited browser documentation explains how to invoke capture, but does not promise identical results for every app design. If a full-page image is unsuitable, capture several viewport or element screenshots and label them in order.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. Its capture flow accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and setup. Free includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Common capture problems

  • The screenshot misses content in an inner panel: Full-page capture describes the document, not necessarily every nested scroll container. If the panel cannot be shown clearly in the result, capture the panel or several viewport states separately.
  • A sticky header appears repeatedly or content is clipped: Inspect the saved image rather than assuming the full-page output is correct. Try an area, viewport, or element capture, or split the guide into sequential screenshots.
  • The page shows the wrong state: Return to the app, recreate the exact state, and close transient UI that is not part of the instruction before capturing again.
  • You cannot find Firefox’s full-page button: Open DevTools settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons.

Browser coverage

The documented workflows here cover Chrome and Firefox. Current Edge and Safari steps have not been confirmed here, so check those browsers’ current official help before following instructions written for them. Do not confuse a DevTools screenshot with screen sharing: Chrome’s Captured Surface Control API concerns a web app that has already started capturing a browser tab, and scrolling that captured tab requires user permission. That permission flow is not needed for the DevTools screenshot steps above. See Chrome’s captured-surface documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Firefox save an entire-page screenshot?

Firefox saves the screenshot in Downloads.

Do I need to grant screen-sharing permission to take a DevTools screenshot?

No. The permission workflow described for Chrome’s Captured Surface Control API applies to scrolling a tab that is already being captured, not the DevTools screenshot steps in this guide.
