First decide what the screenshot needs to prove. To document the failure, capture the sign-in redirect, expired-session message, or partial page as soon as it appears. To capture the protected content, renew authentication and revisit the target before taking the screenshot. A screenshot records the browser’s current state; an expired-session page is evidence of the interruption, not a capture of the page behind it.
Capture the expired-session state or restore the page?
These are different tasks, so keep their screenshots separate:

- Document the interruption: capture the redirect, error message, or partially rendered page while it is visible. Do not reauthenticate first if doing so would remove the evidence you need.
- Capture the intended page: renew the session through the site’s supported sign-in process, return to the target URL, and confirm that the expected signed-in page is present before capturing.
Give each image a clear filename or bug-report label that identifies the state and point in the flow, such as session-expired-redirect.png or target-page-after-reauth.png. Record the URL as well.

Capture the current browser page with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API can capture the page as it currently appears:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'session-expired.png' });If the page is in the middle of a navigation, select a milestone that matches the evidence you want. For example, domcontentloaded waits for the document to be parsed, rather than waiting for the later load event:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-at-domcontentloaded.png' });Use this only when reaching that milestone is appropriate for the flow: navigation may redirect, and the state at DOM parsing may not yet show the final page or session error. If you already see the failure state and need to preserve it, capture the current page rather than navigating again.

Choose the navigation milestone deliberately
commitrepresents an early navigation point, after the response has been received and document loading has begun.domcontentloadedwaits for document parsing to complete.loadwaits for the page’s load event.networkidlewaits for a period without network connections, but Playwright discourages using it as a test readiness condition.
The later milestone is not automatically the better one. Choose based on whether you need to show an early response, parsed document, or completed load. For tests and repeatable capture, a page-specific signal—such as the expected URL or a visible signed-in element—is usually more meaningful than an arbitrary delay.

If the goal is the protected page rather than proof of the failure, complete the site’s supported authentication flow again, then navigate to the target and verify the expected signed-in state. Playwright supports reusing authenticated browser state, but expired state must be refreshed. Its authentication guide recommends rerunning the setup when existing authentication expires: Playwright authentication documentation.

Use a page-specific check before capturing. For example, wait for a known signed-in element or confirm that the browser is at the expected URL. The exact selector and URL depend on the application:

If the check times out or the URL remains at sign-in, treat that as an authentication failure rather than saving the result as though it were the target page.

Handle saved authentication state safely
Playwright’s saved authentication state can contain cookies and headers that allow someone to impersonate the account. Protect it like a credential, do not attach it to ordinary screenshots or bug reports, and exclude its directory from source control. When the state expires, renew it through the approved setup and verify the signed-in page before reusing it. See the Playwright authentication guide.

- The screenshot shows a sign-in page instead of the target: authentication was not active at capture time, or navigation redirected. Renew the session, revisit the target, and confirm a signed-in signal before capturing.
- The screenshot is too early or incomplete: the chosen navigation milestone precedes the content you need. Use a later milestone or wait for a specific element that indicates the required page state.
- The capture waits indefinitely or is unreliable with
networkidle: pages with ongoing network activity may not reach that condition. Prefer a page-specific readiness signal instead of waiting for network silence. - A fixed delay sometimes works but often misses the state: elapsed time does not prove that authentication or rendering has completed. Replace the sleep with a URL or visible-element check.
- The failure disappeared before you captured it: preserve the current page immediately when the interruption itself is the evidence. Keep that capture distinct from any later screenshot after reauthentication.
