Selenium 3 was a relatively low-friction upgrade for most teams using WebDriver, but it was not simply a version-number change: it removed the original Selenium Core implementation, shifted Selenium RC compatibility onto WebDriver, and arrived during a transition between browser-automation protocols. The clearest migration work fell to Selenium RC users and teams with customized Grid setups. Firefox 48 and later also required geckodriver—but that was a browser-side change affecting Selenium 2 users as well as Selenium 3 users.
What Selenium 3 changed—and what it did not
Selenium 3.0 was announced on October 13, 2016, as the stable release after Selenium 2.53.1. The project described the WebDriver APIs as a drop-in replacement and said Chrome and Edge were expected to continue working as before, with bug fixes and stability improvements included. That was the release-era expectation for WebDriver users, not a guarantee that every Selenium setup would need no changes. Selenium 3.0: Out Now!
The major-version label reflected a deeper architectural change: Selenium removed its original Selenium Core implementation. Selenium Core was the JavaScript foundation behind the older Selenium RC approach. Selenium 3 retained RC interfaces in a legacy package, but backed them with WebDriver instead; existing RC suites could therefore behave differently because their underlying implementation had changed. The Selenium preview said migration problems tended to be systemic and localized, rather than suggesting that every RC test would fail. Selenium 3 is Coming
Who was most likely to need migration work?
| Setup | What to expect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| WebDriver tests running locally | The project described the public WebDriver APIs as unchanged from the last 2.x release and Selenium 3 as a drop-in replacement. | Run the existing suite against the actual browser and driver versions in your environment; the announcement is not a guarantee for every deployment. Selenium project, 2016 |
| Selenium Grid | Many typical Grid installations could switch to the new JAR or Maven dependency, but some JSON configuration and command-line parameters changed. | Review Grid JSON files and launch scripts before upgrading. Preview; release announcement |
| Selenium RC tests | RC interfaces remained available through a legacy package, implemented using WebDriver rather than original Selenium Core. | Test representative RC flows and identify whether the suite can migrate to WebDriver. Java users who needed the old APIs were directed to the selenium-leg-rc dependency, which the project strongly discouraged using unless necessary. Selenium 3 is Coming |
| Firefox 48 or later in the release era | Mozilla’s browser changes meant the old community Firefox driver would no longer work; Selenium users needed geckodriver. | Distinguish this browser-side requirement from Selenium 3 itself: the project said it applied to Selenium 2 users too. Selenium 3 is Coming |
Firefox and geckodriver: a browser change, not a Selenium 3 API change
In its October 2016 preview, the Selenium project explained that Firefox 48 changed browser internals and that the prior community Firefox driver would no longer work. It directed users to Mozilla’s geckodriver, an executable driver that fills a role similar to ChromeDriver or Microsoft Edge WebDriver. The requirement arose from Firefox’s changes, not from a new Selenium 3 API rule, and affected Selenium 2 as well as Selenium 3 users.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The same preview described geckodriver at that time as alpha software based on an evolving W3C standard. That is historical release-era context only; it should not be read as a statement about the driver’s present maturity. For current setup, check Selenium’s live downloads page and the relevant browser-driver documentation.
Selenium 3 supported a protocol transition
Selenium 3 was developed while the W3C WebDriver standard was taking shape. It supported both the legacy JSON Wire Protocol and the W3C protocol; it was not W3C-only. Selenium’s current upgrade guide places W3C level 1 compliance around Selenium 3.11. During the transition, a session handshake could send capabilities in both formats, and the returned protocol determined how the session proceeded. Then versus now: do not use Selenium 3 guidance as current setup advice
Selenium 3 is a historical release. The Selenium downloads page reviewed on October 3, 2026 listed Selenium 4.49.0 as stable for core language bindings and Grid, released September 9, 2026; version listings can change, so check the live page before choosing a version. Selenium downloads
Selenium 4 removed legacy protocol support. Its upgrade guidance highlights Capabilities and Actions as areas that may need attention: standard W3C capability names include browserName, browserVersion, platformName, acceptInsecureCerts, pageLoadStrategy, proxy, timeouts, and unhandledPromptBehavior. The older version and platform names are replaced by browserVersion and platformName, and non-standard browser or cloud capabilities need a vendor prefix. These are Selenium 4 migration considerations, not changes introduced by Selenium 3. Selenium upgrade guide

For screenshots, use a screenshot tool—not as a replacement for Selenium
Selenium remains the relevant tool when your task is browser interaction and automation. If the task is simply to capture a web page as an image or PDF, a screenshot API can avoid setting up and maintaining a browser session. ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first for that narrower job: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed. It is not a substitute for Selenium workflows that need to interact with a browser.
