To capture a page without its cookie banner, use a browser automation workflow: open the page, find and click its consent control, verify the banner is gone, and then take the screenshot. A direct-render screenshot API may accept cookies, but that is not the same as clicking a consent button; the reviewed Screenshot API documentation does not document a pre-capture interaction step. If you need the API to handle consent cleanup for you, ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture.
Why a screenshot API may not dismiss a cookie banner
A standard screenshot endpoint receives a URL, renders the page, and returns an image or document. The reviewed Screenshot API documentation describes settings such as viewport size, format, delay, cookies, and headers, but does not document a way to locate and click a page control before the image is taken. Supplying a cookie is not equivalent to accepting consent: a site may use a different cookie name, require a particular value, or manage consent through another mechanism. Only rely on a cookie-based approach after verifying it works for the target site.
To interact with an HTML consent banner, use a browser automation tool such as Playwright, or a service that supports browser interaction. The example below uses Playwright. Browserless also documents a workflow that clicks a consent control before capturing the page: Auto-accept cookie consent banners.
Dismiss the banner, verify the page, then capture
There is no universal selector for consent banners. Use the target site’s actual markup or accessible control labels when possible. Generic selectors can be useful as fallbacks, but they may match the wrong button, miss a custom control, or fail when the banner appears inside an iframe.
Runnable Playwright example
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in a Node.js project with npm install playwright followed by npx playwright install chromium. Save this as capture.mjs, then run it with a target URL, for example node capture.mjs https://example.com.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const targetUrl = process.argv[2];
if (!targetUrl) {
throw new Error('Usage: node capture.mjs https://example.com');
}
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
await page.goto(targetUrl, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 30000 });
// Prefer a site-specific locator when you know the site's consent UI.
const consent = page.getByRole('button', {
name: /accept (all )?cookies|agree|reject/i
}).first();
if (await consent.isVisible().catch(() => false)) {
await consent.click();
await consent.waitFor({ state: 'hidden', timeout: 5000 }).catch(() => {});
}
// Capture only after checking the page state for your target site.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
This example is a starting pattern, not a universal or tested selector. The regular expression intentionally includes both acceptance and rejection wording; choose the control that matches your purpose and the site’s consent choices. For production captures, assert that the banner is actually absent or inspect the resulting image before treating the screenshot as clean.
Use site-specific selectors for reliability
Inspect the page’s DOM or accessibility tree, then target the intended button by role and name or by a selector specific to that site. Browserless illustrates candidates such as IDs or classes containing “accept,” a cookie-button selector, OneTrust’s accept button ID, and .cc-accept; these are examples to investigate, not standards that every site follows. If the selector is not present, treat that as a normal no-banner case rather than failing the capture.

networkidle waits for network activity to settle, but it is not a guarantee that every application is ready or that a delayed banner has appeared. Some pages keep connections open, load consent UI later, or update the banner asynchronously after a click. Choose a wait condition based on the actual page, and verify the post-click state rather than assuming a fixed delay will work everywhere.
Choose viewport or full-page output
Capture the visible viewport when the relevant content fits on screen. Use a full-page screenshot when the content or the banner-related state you need to inspect extends below the fold. Playwright supports fullPage: true; browser dimensions and output size may affect memory use and capture time, especially for long pages.
The reviewed Screenshot API documentation describes a direct GET endpoint that returns image bytes and supports viewport width and height, full_page, format, quality, scale, dark mode, delay, cookies, headers, basic authentication, and timeout. Its documented defaults and limits, as accessed in 2026, are:
| Setting | Documented value |
|---|---|
| Viewport width | Default 1280 CSS pixels; maximum 3840 |
| Viewport height | Default 800 CSS pixels; maximum 4320 |
| Full-page height | Capped at 4320 pixels |
delay |
Default 0 ms; maximum 10,000 ms |
timeout |
Default 25 seconds; documented range 1–30 seconds |
These are vendor-documented settings, not independent performance measurements, and they may change. A direct-render endpoint with these documented options does not provide the pre-capture click step described above.

Distinguish an HTML banner from a JavaScript dialog
A cookie consent panel is usually part of the page’s HTML. Find its control and click it as a locator. Browser-managed JavaScript dialogs—alert, confirm, prompt, and beforeunload—use a separate Playwright dialog event. Playwright automatically dismisses these dialogs when no handler is registered. If you do register a handler, it must accept or dismiss the dialog; otherwise the page can remain blocked. See the Playwright dialog documentation.
page.on('dialog', async dialog => {
await dialog.accept();
});
Accepting a JavaScript dialog does not dismiss an HTML cookie banner, and clicking an HTML button does not handle a browser-managed dialog.
Common failures and fixes
- The banner remains in the screenshot: the locator may not match, the control may be in an iframe, or the banner may appear after your wait. Inspect the target page, use a site-specific locator, and verify the banner is hidden before capture.
- The script clicks the wrong option: a broad text match can select “reject,” “manage settings,” or a different control. Identify the intended consent action from the page’s accessible labels and use a more specific locator.
- The click times out: the button may not be visible, may be covered by another element, or may not yet exist. Check visibility and page state first; make the no-banner path conditional.
- Navigation or
networkidletimes out: some sites keep network requests active. Use a page-appropriate readiness condition, such as waiting for a known content selector, and set a timeout suited to the target rather than assuming network idle is always attainable. - The page is blank or incomplete: the site may need more time, a different authentication state, or a browser environment that can load its required resources. Confirm the page content before saving the image.
- The screenshot is too short: use
fullPage: truefor a full-page capture, while accounting for tool-specific height limits and the larger output. - The image still shows a late overlay: the consent UI may be inserted or updated after the initial load. Wait for the banner to appear or for a site-specific post-consent state, then check it before capturing.

Can I dismiss every cookie banner with one generic selector?
No. Banner markup and button labels vary by site, so a generic selector cannot be relied on universally.
Does dismissing consent always mean choosing “accept all”?
No. Use the control appropriate to your task and the consent choices offered by the site.
