To play a church’s prerecorded videos continuously through OBS, install VLC with the same architecture as OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene, load the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then configure OBS with the YouTube stream URL and key, test the video and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. This keeps the playlist repeating; it does not keep the computer, OBS, or internet connection running if one fails.
What you need before configuring the playlist
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the broadcast. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS documents the source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS: Media Sources
- The media files the church intends to play, with permission for their use in a livestream.
- A YouTube Live Control Room stream and its server URL and stream key.
- A dependable upload connection with capacity for the chosen output bitrate plus headroom.

Install VLC before creating the source
Install VLC, matching its architecture to OBS. If VLC Video is missing from OBS’s Sources add menu, first confirm VLC is installed and that both programs have the same architecture. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. OBS: Media Sources

Add the source to the scene
In OBS, select the scene for the broadcast. In the Sources panel, use the add control and choose VLC Video. Add the files to its playlist and arrange them in the intended order. VLC Video supports a playlist; the separate Media Source is for a single file. OBS: Media Sources

Set looping and shuffle deliberately
Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback after the last playlist item ends; OBS documents it as enabled by default. Shuffle is separate and documented as off by default. Leave shuffle off for a planned service order, or turn it on only if randomized playback is wanted. OBS: Media Sources

Choose what happens when the source is hidden
OBS provides visibility behavior options to stop and restart playback, pause and resume it, or keep it playing while hidden. The right choice depends on the scene layout: if the broadcast switches scenes, decide whether the playlist should continue in the background or resume/restart when the VLC source becomes visible. Confirm the audio track and mixer level
Check the VLC source’s Audio Track setting; OBS documents track 1 as the default. Confirm the expected sound appears in the OBS audio mixer, then listen to the YouTube preview. Do not assume that visible video means the correct audio track is being sent. OBS: Media Sources

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

Get the destination details from YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that stream.

Enter the URL and key in OBS
In OBS stream settings, select the appropriate YouTube connection method and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guide describes entering these details in the encoder. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Set output for the connection you have
YouTube supports H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR) for general RTMP/RTMPS encoder recommendations. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current recommendations for the output you choose rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Start a test and inspect the incoming feed
Before the church relies on the stream, test with representative motion and audio. Check that the intended VLC source is visible, sound is present and at an appropriate level, and YouTube receives the expected image and audio. During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. Plan for continuity, archives, and rights
A looping playlist is not an always-on system
Loop Playlist repeats local media; it does not recover a failed computer, OBS process, power supply, or internet connection. YouTube cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. The computer must remain on, OBS must keep running, and the connection must remain available for this DIY setup to continue broadcasting. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
Do not rely on a very long YouTube stream as the only archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a nonstop broadcast that needs a complete record, arrange a separate local recording and archive plan. YouTube recommends recording locally as a backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Confirm rights for every item in the playlist
YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music rights. Check rights for recorded songs, videos, and other media in the playlist.
