To save a page you can view through your own authorized subscriber session, use Selenium to open the page in that session and capture the browser state. In Python, driver.save_screenshot("page.png") saves a PNG of the current browser window. It does not unlock a paywall, and having permission to view a page does not automatically grant permission to keep or share a copy.
What Selenium can capture
Selenium WebDriver automates a browser. Its screenshot methods record what the browser has rendered; they do not provide subscription access or decide whether a saved copy is permitted. The examples below are for pages you are authorized to view through your own account.

Choose the output based on what you need: the visible viewport, a particular element, a browser-specific full-document image, or a PDF. These are different capture methods, not interchangeable names for the same result.
Capture the page in an authorized browser session
- Install Selenium and set up a supported browser and driver for your project. Selenium’s project overview describes WebDriver as an interface for browser automation.
- Open the page in the browser session you are authorized to use. Complete the publisher’s permitted sign-in workflow; the steps vary by site and are not supplied by Selenium’s screenshot API.
- Wait for the specific content you intend to record to appear. Prefer a condition tied to an element or page state that the site exposes rather than assuming a fixed delay will work.
- Call the screenshot method that matches your desired output, then close the browser in a
finallyblock.
This Python outline saves the current-window capture as page.png. The example URL is a placeholder; replace it with the page you are authorized to view. The outline does not implement a publisher’s login flow or a site-specific readiness check, and it has not been run against a publisher site. Make the capture reliable
Wait for the content, not just navigation
A page load event does not establish that every article component, image, or dynamically rendered region is ready for capture. Determine what visible state matters for your task, then wait for an element or application state that represents it. The correct selector and condition depend on the publisher’s page structure; there is no universal wait condition for paywalled pages.

Pick a viewport deliberately
A current-window screenshot records the browser window’s current view. Set the browser window to the size you need before capturing if viewport dimensions matter. If lower content is missing, decide whether you need a full-document image, a specific element capture, or a PDF rather than treating a viewport image as a whole-page record.
Protect the saved file
A capture can include account information or other personal data visible in the browser. Save it in a location appropriate to that information. Selenium’s capture documentation describes API behavior; it does not set a publisher’s retention rules or your account obligations.

Troubleshooting
- The screenshot contains a login or subscription prompt: Selenium captured the browser’s current state. Confirm you are in the intended authorized account, complete the permitted workflow, and wait until the content you need is actually displayed.
- Text or images are missing: The page may not have finished rendering the relevant content. Wait for the element or state that indicates readiness, then capture again. The right condition is specific to the site.
- The image cuts off the article: A viewport screenshot is not a full-document capture. Use a documented full-document method supported by your browser and binding, capture the relevant element, or use PDF output where supported.
- The PDF method is unavailable: Selenium documents

tryand calldriver.quit()infinally, as in the example, so cleanup is attempted even if navigation or capture fails.

Check the applicable account terms and permissions for your intended use. Selenium’s documentation establishes what its browser APIs can capture, not what a publisher permits you to do with the resulting file.
