How to Capture a Password-Protected Web App with PagePeeker—and What to Do If It Cannot

PagePeeker’s public documentation does not establish support for authenticated captures. Match the workflow to Basic Auth, cookies, headers, or interactive login, and verify the resulting image.

PagePeeker’s public documentation does not explain how to capture a page that requires authentication. Its site describes screenshot and thumbnail services, but the material available does not confirm support for HTTP Basic credentials, session cookies, authorization headers, or a login form. Check with PagePeeker before relying on it for a protected page. If it does not support your app’s login method, use an authenticated browser workflow that does.

What PagePeeker documents about protected pages

PagePeeker offers website screenshots and thumbnails, including a free thumbnail example and an account-based API. Its public pages mention premium options such as full-page screenshots, rendering customization, and delivery to your own CDN. The FAQ says renders are cached for several days and that displaying a cached thumbnail, requesting a new render, checking availability, and other API calls count toward API usage. Those details do not establish that PagePeeker can sign in to a target app.

The accessible API navigation redirected to the homepage, and the public material reviewed does not explain how to pass credentials or browser session state. That leaves the authentication question unresolved; it is not proof that the service cannot do it. Ask PagePeeker whether its current API supports the specific mechanism your app uses before sending credentials or depending on the result. See the PagePeeker homepage and FAQ.

PagePeeker pricing is subject to change

When accessed on October 3, 2026, PagePeeker’s pricing page listed Basic at $5.99 per month, Advanced at $39.99 per month, and custom pricing for Premium. The listed monthly call limits were 100,000, 1,000,000, and no limit, respectively; caching times were 7 days, 5 days, and customizable. The page listed a maximum thumbnail size up to 480×360 for Basic and Advanced, and no limit for Premium; mobile/tablet and full-length screenshots appeared under Premium. These are vendor-listed terms seen on that date, not guarantees of current or future plan details. Check the pricing page for current terms.

Choose a capture method that matches the login

“Password-protected” can describe different authentication flows. A tool that supports one may not handle another:

App authentication What a capture workflow needs Important distinction
HTTP Basic Authentication A browser capture service that explicitly accepts HTTP credentials. This is a browser-level authentication challenge, not a custom sign-in form.
Session cookie A capture browser that can start with valid cookies scoped to the target domain and path. Cookies expire and function as credentials; protect them accordingly.
Authorization token or header A service that can attach the required target-site request headers. The screenshot provider’s API key is separate from the app’s token.
Interactive or browser-state login Browser automation that signs in and captures the page in the same authenticated browser context. A saved authenticated state may allow account impersonation and must be treated as a secret.

Cloudflare Browser Run documents an authenticate object for HTTP Basic challenges, session-cookie support, and setting target-site headers with setExtraHTTPHeaders in its screenshot endpoint documentation. These are options for that documented browser workflow, not evidence that PagePeeker accepts the same inputs.

For a form-based login or a flow that depends on redirects and client-side browser state, use browser automation. Playwright documents saving and reusing authenticated browser state for tests in its authentication guide. The saved state can contain cookies and headers that enable account impersonation, so keep it out of source control and protect it like a password.

Practical workflow for an authenticated screenshot

  1. Confirm authorization. Capture only apps and accounts you are authorized to access. Start with a non-sensitive staging page when possible.
  2. Identify the login mechanism. Determine whether access depends on an HTTP Basic challenge, cookies, a request header, or an interactive login and browser state.
  3. Verify PagePeeker support for that mechanism. Consult its current API documentation or ask support directly. Do not assume a URL or password parameter exists when the public documentation does not establish one.
  4. Choose a compatible authenticated browser workflow if needed. Use a documented service for the supported credential type, or run browser automation in an environment you control for interactive authentication.
  5. Protect credentials and session state. Store passwords, tokens, cookies, and saved browser state in protected server-side secrets or files. Avoid placing them in public URLs, client-side pages, repositories, or logs. Use least-privilege credentials and revoke temporary access when finished.
  6. Wait for the actual page content. For JavaScript-heavy apps, wait for an app-specific selector that signals the dashboard or target content is ready, rather than assuming navigation completion means rendering is done.
  7. Inspect the captured image. Confirm that it shows the intended authenticated page, not a sign-in form, authorization error, stale state, or partially rendered dashboard.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookies and Authorization headers, and supports custom CSS, JavaScript, selector waits, full-page captures, and other browser options. It can help when the app’s existing session or request credentials are sufficient; it does not replace an interactive login flow unless the required authenticated state is supplied.

For example, pass a session cookie in a request header:

Consult the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for credential and capture options. Troubleshooting a protected-page capture

  • The image shows a login page: the capture browser did not receive valid authentication, the session expired, or the app requires an interactive login. Recheck the chosen auth method and use a browser context that signs in when needed.
  • The image shows an authorization error: confirm the account or token has access to that route, and verify that cookies or headers are scoped and sent to the correct domain.
  • The dashboard is blank or incomplete: wait for a selector representing the rendered content, then capture again. Navigation finishing does not necessarily mean a JavaScript app has finished rendering.
  • A previously valid cookie no longer works: sessions expire or may be bound to context. Obtain fresh authorized state and avoid reusing stale credentials.
  • You cannot tell whether PagePeeker supports the login: ask its support team about the exact method—Basic Auth, cookies, headers, or interactive login—rather than testing with production credentials or assuming the API accepts them.
  • Capture state leaks into logs or a repository: remove exposed secrets, rotate or revoke them, and move future credentials and saved browser state into protected storage.

Is a screenshot API key the same as the web app’s password?

No. The screenshot provider’s key authorizes use of that provider; the target app’s password, cookie, or token authorizes access to the protected app.

Should I put a password or session cookie in a screenshot URL?

Avoid putting secrets in URLs. URLs can be exposed through logs, browser history, and other systems; use a supported protected credential mechanism instead.
