To capture a scroll-triggered animation, first scroll the page until the element reaches the state you want, then capture the viewport or the element itself. A full-page screenshot is useful for a long document, but it does not recreate the sequence of scrolling through it; for multiple animation states, take separate screenshots at controlled scroll positions.
Choose the capture that matches what you need
- One long image of the page: Use Playwright’s full-page screenshot when the page looks consistent regardless of how it was scrolled. It captures the scrollable document as one tall image.
- One particular animation state: Scroll to the trigger point, let the page update, then capture the viewport or the relevant element.
- Several states or repeatable visual checks: Script screenshots at specific scroll positions and save one image per position. Keep the viewport, browser version, device scale, page state and scroll offsets consistent between runs.
- Animation debugging: Use Chrome DevTools’ Animations panel to inspect and scrub captured animation timelines. This is for examining the animation; save the image separately with a screenshot command.

Capture a specific state with Playwright
In the example below, replace the URL, scroll offset and output path with values for your page. The script captures the viewport after scrolling; it leaves animations enabled so the screenshot reflects the live page state rather than asking Playwright to alter animation behavior.

})();The selector in waitFor is an example, not a universal animation signal. Use a selector or other condition that represents the state you actually need. If the page exposes no reliable signal, a short wait may be necessary, but a fixed delay is less dependable because rendering and animation timing vary by site.

Capture the full document instead
For one tall image of the scrollable page, use:

If the animation changes as the visitor scrolls, the full-page result may not show every state you want. Capture individual states at their trigger positions instead.
Capture only the animated element
When surrounding page content is irrelevant, take a screenshot of the target locator after scrolling and waiting for the intended state:

For a visual comparison or bug report, use a repeatable set of scroll offsets and save a separate viewport image at each one. This lets you show the animation’s state at distinct points without suggesting a single full-page image represents the entire scroll sequence.

}The 300 ms delay is only an example; it is not a Playwright-prescribed wait or a guarantee that a page has settled. Prefer a meaningful visible-state condition or an application-provided animation signal. For comparisons, keep browser version, viewport dimensions, device scale, page state and offsets unchanged.

Understand Playwright’s animation setting
Screenshot option animations defaults to 'allow', which leaves animations untouched. That is generally the appropriate setting when documenting a live scroll-triggered state after scrolling to it.
Setting animations: 'disabled' does not freeze every animation at its current frame. Playwright fast-forwards finite animations to completion, firing transitionend; infinite animations are canceled to their initial state and replayed after the screenshot. That can produce a different state from the one you intended to record.

Inspect a scroll-driven animation in Chrome
- Open Chrome DevTools and select the Animations panel.
- With the panel open, trigger the animation by scrolling the page.
- Select the captured animation group to inspect it and scrub its timeline.
- When you need a saved image, take it separately with a browser screenshot command at the required state.
Chrome’s documentation describes captured groups that can include mouse scroll-driven animations and timeline scrubbing. Scrubbing helps inspect behavior; it is not itself a screenshot export workflow.

Troubleshoot screenshots that show the wrong state
- The animation is missing from a full-page image: Full-page capture is not a replay of scroll interactions. Scroll to the trigger and capture a viewport or element, or save separate captures at multiple offsets.
- The screenshot shows the animation completed or reset: Check whether you set
animations: 'disabled'. Remove it or useanimations: 'allow'to preserve the live state. - The capture happens before the reveal appears: Scrolling alone may not mean the page has finished updating. Wait for a page-specific visible condition or known signal; increase a delay only when no reliable condition exists.
- The animation differs between runs: Control the viewport, browser version, device scale, page state and scroll offsets. Also use a stable page-specific wait condition rather than relying on an arbitrary delay.
- The DevTools timeline is visible but there is no image file: The Animations panel is an inspection tool. Use a separate Playwright screenshot call to save the viewport or element.
