You can capture a website in mobile view on a computer with Chrome DevTools: turn on Device Mode, set a mobile viewport or choose a device preset, then capture either the visible screen or the full page. This is a desktop-browser emulation, not a screenshot from a physical phone.
Capture a mobile-view screenshot in Chrome DevTools
- Open the site in desktop Chrome, then open DevTools. One way is to right-click the page and select Inspect.
- In DevTools, click Toggle device toolbar.
- In the device toolbar, select Responsive to enter custom dimensions, or choose a device preset to use its configured dimensions and parameters.
- Set the viewport width and height. If the screenshot is for a design or review that needs both orientations, check portrait and landscape separately. Chrome can also display media-query breakpoints and, for supported presets, a device frame.
- Open More options and select Capture screenshot for the visible viewport. To include content below the fold, choose Capture a full size screenshot.
Chrome’s menu labels and their placement may change between versions. If you do not see these exact labels, check the Device Mode controls in your installed version of Chrome.

Choose the right capture size
- Visible viewport: Use Capture screenshot when you want the page as it appears within the current simulated screen—for example, to review the initial mobile layout.
- Full page: Use Capture a full size screenshot when you want one image containing content beyond the current viewport. This is useful for reviewing a long page, but it represents the whole page rather than one screenful.
What mobile emulation can—and cannot—show
Chrome describes Device Mode as a way to “approximate how your page looks and performs on a mobile device.” It can show how a page responds to the selected viewport and configured device parameters. The page is still running in desktop Chrome, not on phone hardware; Chrome notes, for example, that desktop emulation does not reproduce the different architecture of mobile CPUs. A screenshot alone therefore cannot establish how a site behaves across real devices, browser engines, or hardware. Chrome DevTools Device Mode documentation

When to use a script or a testing service

For a one-time image, DevTools is the shorter route. A scriptable browser workflow is more useful when the same pages need captures across several viewport configurations or as part of ongoing visual checks. Choose a real-device testing service when the question is broader than layout at an emulated size.

Troubleshooting a mobile screenshot
- The page still looks like desktop: Confirm that the device toolbar is enabled and that the viewport width is set to the intended mobile size. A preset or custom viewport changes the emulated layout; it does not turn desktop Chrome into a physical phone.
- The image cuts off below the current screen: You likely captured the viewport. Use More options > Capture a full size screenshot for the full page.
- The capture is the wrong size or orientation: Check the device toolbar’s width and height, and capture portrait and landscape separately if both matter.
- You need evidence of real-device behavior: A Device Mode screenshot cannot establish behavior on phone hardware or every browser engine. Test on a physical device or use a device-testing service.
