To capture a mobile-sized website screenshot in dark mode, use Chrome DevTools on a computer: switch on Device Mode, emulate prefers-color-scheme: dark in the Rendering panel, reload the page, then capture the viewport or full page. On an iPhone, use Safari with dark appearance active and choose Full Page in the screenshot preview if you need the entire webpage.
Choose the right kind of mobile screenshot
A mobile screenshot can mean a capture from an actual phone or a desktop browser simulating a phone-sized viewport. Use a real phone or Simulator when browser controls, operating-system behavior, or device-specific layout matters. Desktop emulation is quicker for responsive checks, but it is an approximation: Safari notes that address bars, keyboards, and device-specific form-field behavior can affect the real layout. Apple’s Responsive Design Mode guidance recommends Simulator for a more accurate preview.

Also decide what “dark mode” means for your capture. Emulating the CSS preference prefers-color-scheme: dark tests whether the website provides its own dark styling. Chrome’s Enable automatic dark mode instead applies a generated dark appearance to light-themed pages; that is not the site’s own designed theme.

Capture a mobile viewport in dark mode with Chrome DevTools
- Open the website in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode and select a mobile device preset, or set the viewport dimensions you need. Device Mode approximates mobile devices rather than reproducing every detail of physical hardware. Chrome’s Device Mode guide describes its emulation and capture options.
- Open the DevTools Rendering panel. Under Emulate CSS media feature
prefers-color-scheme, select dark. The setting emulates the browser preference that sites can use to choose their color scheme. Chrome’s CSS media feature guide explains this option. - Reload the page so it can respond to the emulated preference.
- In Device Mode, open More options and choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the full page.
If the page still looks light
The site may not provide a dark theme for the dark preference. To see Chrome’s generated dark treatment instead, open the Rendering panel and enable Enable automatic dark mode. Chrome says this generates a dark theme for light-themed sites and automatically sets the emulated color preference to dark. Keep the distinction clear in your screenshot or documentation: generated darkening is not the website’s native dark design. Chrome’s guide to automatic dark mode and other effects covers the option.
Capture the webpage on an iPhone in Safari
- Make sure dark appearance is active on the iPhone and open the page in Safari. The exact Settings route for turning on dark appearance depends on the iOS version; check the instructions for the device’s installed version rather than relying on a possibly outdated menu path.
- On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together. On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
- Tap the screenshot preview, then choose Full Page to capture beyond the visible screen. Crop or save the capture as needed.
Apple’s iPhone screenshot guide documents the button combinations and Safari’s Full Page option. A screenshot taken on the phone reflects its actual browser and operating-system context, unlike a desktop viewport preset.

Preview a mobile layout in Safari on Mac
Safari’s Responsive Design Mode previews viewport sizes and pixel ratios, but its presets are approximations. The address bar, keyboard, and device-specific form-field behavior can change how a page appears on actual hardware. Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The desktop-emulated page remains light: confirm that
prefers-color-schemeis set to dark, reload, and check whether the website actually implements a dark theme. Use automatic dark mode only when you want Chrome’s generated appearance. - The screenshot is only the visible portion: choose Capture a full size screenshot in Chrome Device Mode, or Full Page from the iPhone screenshot preview.
- The emulated layout differs from the phone: treat Device Mode and responsive presets as approximations. Validate on the target phone or in Simulator when device-specific behavior matters.
- The iPhone button combination does not match: use the combination for the device’s hardware—side button plus volume-up on Face ID models, or side button plus Home on models with a Home button—and press and release quickly.
- You cannot find the iPhone dark appearance setting: confirm the route for the iOS version installed on the target device; Apple’s cited screenshot guide supports capture steps but does not establish a current Settings path for dark appearance.
